I don't know, I read it as Pete having trouble even coping with the concept of a test. Like he has literally no idea what T is saying, it's just a hole in his experience and that is a harsh reality.

So is Nice Pete supposed to speak with a slow Southern drawl? For some reason I've never imagined his voice that way, but rather unaccented (Midwest, I guess?) and slightly higher-pitched than a normal adult male.
