For the PNQs, I assume they expect a different verifier for each question. Is this true? I doubled up I think on a couple. Your PNQ verifiers may not ever be contacted (mine weren't). It's good however, as it will start you thinking on who you will need as contacts for your clearance.

Jobs like that are usually advertised locally or within the Embassy community. They're either looking for locals or spouses of Americans who work at the embassy. If you want to move there and get the right visa to live and work there you might qualify. There are a non-trivial number of Americans who work as FSNs. You're on your own in terms of housing and Diplomatic immunity and all that other fun stuff though.

I passed, too! I wasn't expecting to pass the first time. Hopefully I'll run into a few of you in DC someday. QEP question: Is it better to write with brief, plain language, or should I elaborate on the particulars of my experience with my cultivated mastery of precise diction?

Pick a current news item and bone up on related vocab, they'll probably ask you to discuss a current event of your choosing. Also expect basic stuff: job, family, that kind of thing. I haven't tried this myself, but if you want a little more time to come up with a response, insert a pause before answering each question, whether you need it or not. The interviewer will assume it's a constant and not be fazed when you actually need the little gap to come up with something. It's a technique for resisting interrogation but I figure carries over to the OPI

It's hard to do this even in English apparently, as news sources do it all the time,

You guys that end up making it through have a huge advantage over your new hires. The network you are building now (serious) will help you in the future. Every little bit of your career progression and assignment selection will end up being influenced by who you know and where you have friends. You never know who ends up being on panels that decide your future.

Most of my 'personal narrative' is extremely personal; most of my experiences have been with myself alone, and I'm hoping to draw good essays from my solo world travels. Is this just off limits because it cannot be verified? If I put down a verifier, is all they have to say is "yeah, he did that poo poo"?

I know this is a bit of an off-chance, but maybe you guys would have some insight. I'm looking at applying to the Canadian foreign service in the next couple of years, and was hoping that maybe there are some goons who are in who might be able to give me some idea of what the application process is. I think a while back there was someone who was applying? Can't remember who though. Or if any of y'all American FSOs have any experience with the Canadian system-- ie, is it fairly similar to the American one? Do you know of any quirks? If you're posted overseas, do you often hang out with the staff of other embassies, or are you fairly insular? I'm also interested in what might be considered security risks. I'm asking this because I'm pretty decent friends with the sons/daughters of people who are high up in the government of a country in Africa-- a definitely rather corrupt one. Would that be a security risk, or something that they'd not be worried about?

Ahahah that's awesome. She'd love it. Reminds me of a footnote from a law review article I wrote. Yes, I know it's not bluebooked properly. 49. Second Life users are relatively free to develop their own animations and activities in game, similar to those in LamdaMOO; it should not be surprising then that rape alleys where users can pay to rape others exist in the virtual world. See “Second Life: Rape for Sale” http://gawker.com/222099/second-life-rape-for-sale (last visited May 12, 2010). -e- That article also cites several youtube videos of flying penises and analyzes the tort law ramifications of raping someone in a virtual world.

I'm interested in hearing more about the phone proficiency test if anyone has experience with it. I'll be taking the Chinese one. From what I can tell, the skill level required isn't really that high. I'll be familiarizing myself with vocab related to a few current events involving China, but what else do they ask you about, if anything? If I understood the e-mail correctly, a passing score will help me out on the QEP, which definitely sounds nice. It's good to see so many Foreign Service goons!
