Austin is pretty awesome, and you should apply, an interview is only a 50 dollar plane ticket away or a 3 hour drive.

I would have applied a while ago but I just bought a drat house here in San Antonio. I'd be a really good fit for the windows sys admin spot.

My experience: 4 years personal and professional supporting mixed networks, including Windows servers and clients, Mac OS X clients, Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) servers and clients, FreeBSD and Solaris servers.

Varying amounts (up to 4 years) of experience, mostly personal and academic, in PHP, C#, Python, and C++; along with standard frameworks for each of those platforms (Windows Forms, ASP.NET MVC, Qt, etc). Also experience with SQLite, MySQL, and Microsoft SQL Server.

I also have experience in IT and engineering for TV broadcast systems (Avid Media Composer, studio technology, etc), so if you're in broadcast or content creation I wouldn't be coming in blind.
What I'm looking for: Software development (web backend, desktop, you name it) or most IT. I've generally been "the IT guy" so I've never really specialized. At the moment, most likely I'd be looking for contract positions.
What I'm NOT looking for: Entry level IT, web design (I can do backend development but I can't design worth a poo poo)

I'm a "corporate IT architect/senior developer" guy that's trying to escape into the world of freelancing.

My experience: Ten years of experience dealing with Inter/Intranet technologies (Microsoft, PHP and Java based). Ten years of experience with relational database management systems (Sql Server and MySql). Ten years of experience with client-server applications (Microsoft, PHP and Java based). Six years of experience designing and implementing service oriented architectures utilizing web services and message queuing.

What I'm looking for: As I mentioned before I'm trying to break into freelancing, and right now I'm specializing in Wordpress site creation. I can also do any sort of general development work in php/MySql/LAMP or Microsoft development environments. I'd also love to find a couple of small companies that have "real" IT needs, but not enough budget for a full time IT guy. 10-20 hours a week would be just fine with me.

What I'm NOT looking for: Full time corporate drone work. I'm currently pretty burned out on doing the exact same thing every day on antiquated hardware and technology. I'd like to find several part time jobs, but I'd consider a full time gig if the work was varied and fast moving.

Where I live: St. Louis, MO area

Where I'm looking: South City would be optimal (south of 44) or downtown, but I'm flexible (especially if telecommuting is an option).

When I can start: For freelancing projects, ASAP. For a full time gig I'd need to give the usual two week notice to my current corporate overlords.

Requirements: I'm really looking for a non-corporate environment. I'd love to be able to use my own hardware, I'd love some options for telecommuting and I'd love a relaxed dress code. I'm also looking to use reasonably current technology - if the job is doing .NET 1.1 development or something older, I'm probably not interested.

Can be reached via: This thread, PM. If you're interested, let me know and I can send over my full "formal" resume.

My experience:
3 years professional Rails work, which includes HTML/CSS/javascript (jQuery & Prototype), writing python/ruby/perl scripts, some smaller C programs, and doing a bunch of lower-intensity DBA and server admin work. I've written in PHP for a decade now, and know SQL. Right now I'm writing what amounts to a full-fledged application in HTML5 tech.

What I'm looking for:
Short-Mid term Rails contract work would be great, but full time totally works too. Frontend or Backend are equally fine. Ruby, Python, PHP or any of their respective frameworks are doable.

What I'm NOT looking for:
Having to do UI design without anyone backing me up. Daily meetings.

Where I live:
Baltimore, MD

Where I'm looking:
Any major metropolitan area, or telecommute.

When can I start:
Whenever works.

Requirements:
Be decent people who treat me like a person. Specifics are very negotiable.

Can be reached via:
PM on this forum would be great, but dustgun@gmail.com with "SA Jorb" in the subject would be nearly-as-great

I get quite a few web developer listings through various listservs, will repost here:

Short term web developer

quote:

Hey All--

Nick Grossman here from OpenPlans. We're an NYC-based nonprofit building technology to help cities & governments work better.

We have a potential upcoming project, doing a fairly high profile government-sponsored open data / transparency website (or websites). The scope of the project may fall outside of what we can do with our full-time staff, so I am looking for folks who would be interested in working on the project on a contractor basis. The details & scope are not yet finalized, but we would be looking for people who have experience & interest in the following areas:

* Implementing data repositories & APIs (ideally using open source tools, some of which are listed here: http://wiki.openmuni.org/Data_Platform)
* Designing and building civic data mashup sites, along the lines of http://govtrack.us and http://maplight.org
* Platform TBD, but most likely Django or Rails for the custom-designed application (not necessarily the data repo)

In terms of skills, we will most likely be looking to bring on 1-2 developers, 1-2 designers, and possibly 1 PM-type person (again, depending on how the scope shapes up). We would be particularly interested in working with small teams who have already worked together. The project would be on a short timeline (roughly six weeks for build & deploy, starting in early August), so the ability to focus significant effort during that time will be important.

If this sounds interesting to you (and apologies for being light on detail at this point), please send me an email, and include links to related websites or software projects that you've worked on (and/or your sunlightlabs / github / sortfolio / etc profile).

Many thanks!
Nick

Christina Xu posted:

Recently, C4FCM sent out a job posting looking for a new outreach coordinator. As the current outreach coordinator, I'd like to share some insider secrets about how awesome working here is. (Spoiler: very!)

You would join a tight-knit crew of researchers and staff united around creating technology that can actually make a difference in struggling communities. But this isn't your average group of nerds: C4 researchers apply their considerable mettle to not just math and code, but also to thinking critically about the social contexts and implications of their technologies. The conversations here are friendly and full of laughs but also hard-hitting and honest. People aren't afraid to ask tough questions of their colleagues (and friends!) to help everyone's projects improve. There is a shared dedication to working closely and humbly with communities that is incredibly refreshing in a world full of problematic projects, and I can't imagine a better group of coworkers to have spent the last few years with. Beyond the core staff, the wider C4 community is an impressive assembly as well: some of the brightest and most insightful minds in the field sit on our email list and frequently attend our events and meetings.

As the Outreach Coordinator, your main responsibility would be to make sure that the wonderful work being done at the Center reaches those who would find it useful. This means traveling to conferences to present, identifying new groups to collaborate with, and developing outreach strategies with C4 researchers.

You'll get all the perks that come with the Center's Media Lab location: beautiful spaces to work in, an atmosphere brimming with creativity, roving robots, your very own inflatable elephant, ping pong, and, my favorite, the Media Lab Free Food Camera.

As for me, I'm moving on after 3 years of being affiliated with the Center to learn about other perspectives in the tech for good field. I've learned an incredible amount in my time at the Center about the technical and operational needs of communities and nonprofits, and I'm taking that knowledge to help grow Breadpig, a wacky little company started by my friend Alexis that seeks to collect resources (profit + tech savvy) and give them to great nonprofits that need them. It'll be an interesting change of pace, but I certainly plan on staying a close friend of the Center.

If you are looking for a fun job with great coworkers where you can make a difference at the intersection of technology and social impact, and if you're awesome, I highly recommend you apply for my job. I'll miss it a lot.

If I didn't like my current job - and feel obligated to stay, since I haven't even finished out my first year yet - I would jump all over this.

I have been looking for a job for 7 months now and found nothing. I haven't even seen job ads for anything that wasn't high level management. I have been working a part time job at a pizza place making $7.00/hr + tips, so I can eat and have a place to live. If someone wants to pay me $19/hr then I will jump up and down. Am I worth that kind of money? I believe so, but I have to start someplace. The more experience I can build up the better. So if the only people that are hiring want to pay me $10.00/hr and give me full time and a stable work place I would be happy as well.

Most of the companies I have applied to don't really require that I mention what kind of salary I'm expecting anyways. In my experience that has always been discussed during the interview, which I have yet to get too yet.

You're probably actually hurting yourself and your credibility quite a bit with numbers like that. Yes, salary can vary pretty wildly, but you'd be far better off with the generic "negotiable" or "competitive" when asked to put something down. At least that's more neutral, rather than having someone looking at $10 when they're prepared to hand out $15-$20 and dismissing you because "there must be something wrong with you."

Sorry, no, if it ain't in the list I ain't got it.

Our products are locally implemented, so we don't have a huge server farm to maintain, just our dev boxes and webservers and such. (One of the few companies I can think of that hasn't transitioned its "software product" offering into a "service.")

So our IT staff is pretty small.

From what I gather, Austin is like the least-Texas city in TX. I still need to check it out sometime.

Who we are: Comparison Shopping Engine

Where we are: Los Angeles, CA (Culver City, specifically)

Job title: PHP Developer / Senior PHP Developer

What we want: We're looking for an entry level PHP developer position as well as a senior level position. You would be working on the frontend team of a large website. These are full-time positions with good benefits

If you don't have much PHP experience, but are competent in Perl or something similar please don't hesitate. Solid problem solving skills are more important than competency in PHP. If you have a solid grasp of another similar language it will translate to PHP without a problem.

Why you'd want to work here: It's a very relaxed work environment. You can wear whatever you want, pretty good pay and good benefits. We work 40 hrs/week, anything above that is overtime.

Why you wouldn't want to work here: Our corporate overlords make us jump through hoops, occasionally.

Please email woodenpants@hotmail.com if interested

Well gently caress me, finally another Dallas position and it's programming. I don't suppose your employer has anything more IT-related available by any chance?

I actually will, but I'm not sure when it's going to open up. Could be a month or two or three. Send me a resume if you'd like.

But seriously I think Austin has a goon bias, we should have way more jobs in Dallas.

Also have a Sr. Java developer position open and will soon have a QA position open as well. But I'm too lazy to write those up at the moment.
