Is there a "Black Powder" style generic rule set for sci-fi stuff? Something that would let me run everything from Aliens to X-Com with stops at Stargate and Starship Troopers in between?

The only problem is that I can't really find a good description of the game.

What is the faction fluff?
What is this card mechanic I hear so much about?
How do the armies play out?
What kinds of special abilities do they have?

Stuff like that.

I bought my first crew last week, and going to Battle Bunker this weekend for a Malifaux tourney. I got myself the Seamus crew, he's an insane serial killer necromancer who keeps a horde of zombie hookers around him.
lovely WIP of the crew

It's cheap to get into, you only need a starter box, rulebook and fate deck (can just use a normal deck of cards) to begin with. Most games are 25-35SS, most starter boxes give you 20SS worth of models, so for a complete force you add 1 or 2 models and that's it.

I just had my first 3 games of Malifaux today at the stores tournament. 2 losses & a draw which I was pleased with for my learning games. Also won a $20 voucher for best Resserectionist crew (by being the only resser crew), so hooray for default! Will use that once Book 2 comes out next month, will give me more cash to spend on the new models.

Could have gotten a win out of my first game if I had remembered that Seamus is hard to wound, instead of taking damage like a chump. Lilith also bent him over and stuck it in without lube in a later game, she hits hard.
Also managed to get 3 of my other gaming buddies along to check out the game, and they all bought at least 1 crew each (one of them bought every Arcanist starter box and also a bunch of mercenaries) so I've now got people closer than an hour drive to play with.

Yeah. Book 2 will have new masters for every faction along with new minions to fit in. Not sure whether that means new starter boxes or just seperate releases, and not sure when the new mini's will be coming. It also will have new strategies (missions) and schemes (hidden goals).

Gotta love their customer service as well. My rotten belles stat cards had a duplicate, rather than the 3 different belles pictured on them. I knew they sold replacement cards through their store, but I shot an e-mail off just checking that there is meant to be 3 cards. Nathan Caroland (the game designer) e-mailed me back saying that a new card was on it's way to me, which was cool that I didn't have to buy a replacement after laminating all my stat cards.

Also got my Guild crew delivered, Lady Justice starter box and executioner, still waiting on the scales of justice totem and my awesome base inserts from Iron Halo https://ironhalo.net/store//catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44_39&products_id=414.

It's really odd when you first start playing, I was using dice as markers during my first game and I kept picking them up before realising I needed my cards instead.
It's a really interesting and fun play mechanic, it drew in 3 mates that I game with who are pretty die hard 40k and Fantasy players with the odd Flames of War game. They dropped probably $300 or so buying rulebooks and crews, and we'll be organising weekly games so we can really get the hang of it.
If you get a chance, borrow a crew and try a game or 2. When it's only about $50-60 for a complete crew it's not exactly expensive to get started.

Wyrd posted:

With Gencon right around the corner and a slew of new releases, we thought it high time that we share our efforts.

August will see an expansion rulebook for Malifaux along with additional box sets and clamshells for masters, henchmen and minions. A new deck of cards called our Puppet Deck, which can be used as an alternative Fate Deck and is made out of plastic, making it much more durable to wear and tear during play. Lastly, we partnered with WorldWorksGames to create fully customizable and tangible terrain for your skirmish gaming which we call Terraclips. Our first three offers of this new line will be the 3D Streets, Sewers and Buildings of Malifaux!

These will see an early release at Gencon with a public release over the next couple of months through distribution and retailers. Information is below.

August Releases

WYR6013 - Malifaux Expansion Rulebook: Rising Powers - $35 (256 full color pages, soft cover)
http://www.wyrd-games.net/Display/MalifauxBook2Cover.jpg

The battles waged to control the Soulstone trade have created class divisions for mankind in Malifaux. While the Guild struggles to maintain peace and control the flow of Soulstones beneath an iron fist, Arcanists, mages basking in the glory of their newfound power, have bonded together to oppose those that would deny them the glory of their natural abilities. Resurrectionists practicing the necromantic art of rebirth and reanimation have shed the vestiges of their humanity with each accursed syllable of their unholy pacts. And the inhabitants of this new world, the Neverborn, stand against them all, determined to drive them back through the Great Breach that spans the aether between worlds.

Here, in Malifaux, the battle lines are drawn and new allies and adversaries have risen to meet the escalation in power. More than the exploitation of coveted Soulstone is at stake. The balance of Life and Death stands against the twisting of Fate’s forces.

As the world of Malifaux expands, so do the opportunities for conflict. A growing encounter system gives players nearly limitless options to fight over. Also, you are no longer limited by the Master you choose to lead your Crew. Henchmen have appeared to take on additional roles unavailable before, and releasing the previously unknown power of the Special Forces.

With the stories in this Malifaux expansion, new characters are presented for every faction – Guild, Resurrectionists, Arcanists, Neverborn, and Outcasts, including a look at the Gremin Kin, one group of Special Forces.

This year at GENCON Wyrd will be at booth 2213 with all of our latest offerings. As always, we like to do something fun and this year we have two Special Edition miniatures.

The first is Miss Pack, an alternative sculpt to one of McMournings demented Nurses and this years Special Edition miniature. Spend a $100 or more in the Wyrd booth and you'll get her free! A preview of her art card is below, with a painted miniature following here shortly.

http://www.wyrd-games.net/Display/MissPackCard.jpg

The second is a miniature that will be only available during convention season, both at Gencon and online for the four days of the convention. This is the Nightmare Version of the Dreamer and companion, Lord Chompy Bits. Standing 72mm tall at the eyes, this is one BIG piece of metal which is completely usable for play in Malifaux and comes with stat cards for the Dreamer and Lord Chompy Bits, a new master for the Neverborn.

Due to the size of this piece, in order to keep costs reasonable, this will be only available for direct sale to customer, and only during convention season in limited quantities. This limited box set will retail for $60. A normal version of slightly less nightmarish size will be made available in the near future. Pictures of the painted product to follow shortly - in the mean time, artwork for the piece.

Also, releasing at Gencon and on pre-sale now at Battlefoam, the new Malifaux Battlefoam bag will be available.

More details and product previews to follow leading up to Gencon!

Had another game of Malifaux today, teaching one of my mates the game.
Seamus worked a lot better with punk zombies, and then using the corpse counters to bring in belles.
My highlights were a single punk zombie beating a sabretooth cerberus without taking a wound, and a punk zombie that died to taelor, had the counter raised into a belle, taelor killing the belle, the belle using her slow to die action to strike back, killing taelor, then being raised again next turn.
Started making some more worldworks terrain as well, 3 buildings done now, just need to build 3 or 4 more, plus some of the extra stuff like well's and bridges, then make a 3x3 playing surface out of foamcore tiles. I've already got a 4x4 table which works perfectly with space for all the stat cards, fate deck etc around the edges. Pics incoming once I get a bit more terrain done.

The club I play at loves the idea of Battlefleet Gothic, but due to game imbalance (Necrons) we didn't play that much. Recently we picked up the rules for GZG's Full Thrust and a few excel sheets later everyone's translated their BFG fleet to full thrust. We are consistently amazed at how balanced the game can be (after coming off of Games Workshop products)

Honestly Necrons aren't that hard to deal with. Take out one or two cap ships, or just go to town on their escorts. Don't worry about losing your own escorts if you have them, theirs are far more expensive. Then just disengage your cap ships as they become crippled, and keep the focus on killing one or two of his cruisers.

I played a couple of games of Full Thrust and thoroughly enjoyed it, it's such a simple game but the concept of plotting orders without fully knowing their repercussions was great :) I'd like to try some more advanced games since we just used 3 frigates and a destroyer or something to learn the rules. Haven't had chance to go back to it :(...is there a vassal thing for it anywhere does anyone know?

I know one of the guys has been playing it on something Vassal-like online. But I really do love the simplicity of it once you get past the ship-building stage. Our current point range is 2000 to 3500 and we've been having lots of fun. We'll be trying to figure out a campaign system once we have the rules down more

PaintVagrant posted:

Its fun as heck.

The faction fluff is probably better answered by their website and whatnot, but I can answer about the card mechanic:

You have what is basically a regular deck of cards (I assume in beta thats what they actually used) called a fate deck. THe cards are numbered 1-14. There are 2 jokers a red and a black.

Essentially, whenever you do anything in the game, you flip a card. If you want to alter the outcome of that, you can "cheat fate" by using a card out of your hand to change it. Both players can do this when there is a face to face flip, so there are pretty quick ways to drain your hand over the span of a turn.

Most models have a couple of abilities, and they are fairly synergistic with other faction members. They require a flip to work.

In addition to all of this, some abilities require a certain suite to work, so you have to flip the suite or cheat it.

This is correct. Some of the finer point are minus and plus flips. Say that my defense is 5 and I flip a 6 of rams. My total is 11(rams). Rams is the suit and may or may not effect anything. In order to hit me, you need an 11 minimum. If you hit 11 on the nose, you get a double minus on damage, if you get a 12-16 you have a single minus, 16-21 is normal, and 22+ is a plus flip.

When you deal damage, you flip a card, plus one for each minus or plus you have. If you had minuses you take the LOWEST card, a plus is your choice of card. If you ever flip a black joker, you must take it and it is an autofail no matter what.

It is also the only game where I have had a stampedeing horde of piglets overrun a deamon, while redneck idiots shot each other in the face and laughed at farting mosquitoes.

I was just about to come post about FSA, as I dug out my Dindrenzi big rear end motherfucker ship recently and got it all assembled ready for priming. I was going to pick PV's brains about how he painted his..

PV, was it... white undercoat, skorne red basecoat, devlan mud wash, drybrush something like blood red?

I'm debating a black / yellow striping at the front end style scheme if I can't be arsed with the red.

Anywhos, I'm itching to hit 'confirm' on an order for more spaceship type shenanigans but really don't have anyone to play against locally so might just see if I can get this big ship painted up first.
