Is there a "Black Powder" style generic rule set for sci-fi stuff? Something that would let me run everything from Aliens to X-Com with stops at Stargate and Starship Troopers in between?

I want to try Infinity, but no one in my area plays it ( ) so it looks like I may have to play Malifaux if I want variety of competition. The only problem is that I can't really find a good description of the game. Here's a 1hr video of the owner of my "local" (hour drive away) store giving a demo game & explanation. Not bad to get an idea of how it works. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTtHRBol8OA I bought my first crew last week, and going to Battle Bunker this weekend for a Malifaux tourney. I got myself the Seamus crew, he's an insane serial killer necromancer who keeps a horde of zombie hookers around him. lovely WIP of the crew Click here for the full 1000x387 image. It's cheap to get into, you only need a starter box, rulebook and fate deck (can just use a normal deck of cards) to begin with. Most games are 25-35SS, most starter boxes give you 20SS worth of models, so for a complete force you add 1 or 2 models and that's it.

Stargrunt II by Ground Zero Games is a generic sci-fi ruleset, and it's now free to download from the GZG website.

I just had my first 3 games of Malifaux today at the stores tournament. 2 losses & a draw which I was pleased with for my learning games. Also won a $20 voucher for best Resserectionist crew (by being the only resser crew), so hooray for default! Will use that once Book 2 comes out next month, will give me more cash to spend on the new models. Could have gotten a win out of my first game if I had remembered that Seamus is hard to wound, instead of taking damage like a chump. Lilith also bent him over and stuck it in without lube in a later game, she hits hard. Also managed to get 3 of my other gaming buddies along to check out the game, and they all bought at least 1 crew each (one of them bought every Arcanist starter box and also a bunch of mercenaries) so I've now got people closer than an hour drive to play with. Are they doing Malifaux releases where a book comes out with stuff for everyone, like Warmachine?

Im pretty sure, yeah. Thats how most smaller skirmish-type games work iirc

Cool. There's a couple guys starting to play Malifaux and Infinity at the store I work out now and I'm pretty psyched to see how Malifaux plays. Not rolling dice seems to unnatural to me.

Its definitely not my cup of tea thematically, but it might be the most fun system Ive ever played.

S.J. posted:Are they doing Malifaux releases where a book comes out with stuff for everyone, like Warmachine? Yeah. Book 2 will have new masters for every faction along with new minions to fit in. Not sure whether that means new starter boxes or just seperate releases, and not sure when the new mini's will be coming. It also will have new strategies (missions) and schemes (hidden goals). Gotta love their customer service as well. My rotten belles stat cards had a duplicate, rather than the 3 different belles pictured on them. I knew they sold replacement cards through their store, but I shot an e-mail off just checking that there is meant to be 3 cards. Nathan Caroland (the game designer) e-mailed me back saying that a new card was on it's way to me, which was cool that I didn't have to buy a replacement after laminating all my stat cards. Also got my Guild crew delivered, Lady Justice starter box and executioner, still waiting on the scales of justice totem and my awesome base inserts from Iron Halo https://ironhalo.net/store//catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44_39&products_id=414. It's really odd when you first start playing, I was using dice as markers during my first game and I kept picking them up before realising I needed my cards instead. It's a really interesting and fun play mechanic, it drew in 3 mates that I game with who are pretty die hard 40k and Fantasy players with the odd Flames of War game. They dropped probably $300 or so buying rulebooks and crews, and we'll be organising weekly games so we can really get the hang of it. If you get a chance, borrow a crew and try a game or 2. When it's only about $50-60 for a complete crew it's not exactly expensive to get started. KTS fucked around with this message at 02:07 on Jul 15, 2010 |

And more Malifaux stuff, with previews of the new release stuff.Wyrd posted:With Gencon right around the corner and a slew of new releases, we thought it high time that we share our efforts. Man those Terrain sets look really awesome. Also Those new Arcanists models are awesome I think I want some... It is not like I needed that money anyway.

Yeah, I think I'll start an Arcanist's crew with the new box, and maybe pick up the Resserectionist box. I want to see the new Guild & Neverborn models as well.

Had another game of Malifaux today, teaching one of my mates the game. Seamus worked a lot better with punk zombies, and then using the corpse counters to bring in belles. My highlights were a single punk zombie beating a sabretooth cerberus without taking a wound, and a punk zombie that died to taelor, had the counter raised into a belle, taelor killing the belle, the belle using her slow to die action to strike back, killing taelor, then being raised again next turn. Started making some more worldworks terrain as well, 3 buildings done now, just need to build 3 or 4 more, plus some of the extra stuff like well's and bridges, then make a 3x3 playing surface out of foamcore tiles. I've already got a 4x4 table which works perfectly with space for all the stat cards, fate deck etc around the edges. Pics incoming once I get a bit more terrain done.

The club I play at loves the idea of Battlefleet Gothic, but due to game imbalance (Necrons) we didn't play that much. Recently we picked up the rules for GZG's Full Thrust and a few excel sheets later everyone's translated their BFG fleet to full thrust. We are consistently amazed at how balanced the game can be (after coming off of Games Workshop products)

Take out one or two cap ships, or just go to town on their escorts. Don't worry about losing your own escorts if you have them, theirs are far more expensive. Then just disengage your cap ships as they become crippled, and keep the focus on killing one or two of his cruisers.

I played a couple of games of Full Thrust and thoroughly enjoyed it, it's such a simple game but the concept of plotting orders without fully knowing their repercussions was great I'd like to try some more advanced games since we just used 3 frigates and a destroyer or something to learn the rules. Haven't had chance to go back to it ...is there a vassal thing for it anywhere does anyone know?

I know one of the guys has been playing it on something Vassal-like online. But I really do love the simplicity of it once you get past the ship-building stage. Our current point range is 2000 to 3500 and we've been having lots of fun. We'll be trying to figure out a campaign system once we have the rules down more

I'll have a look into it, since come September I am going to be bored out my skull so it'd be good to have a range of games to play, maybe we could drum up some players to try out a campaign of some sort here.

That Malifaux terrain looks fantastic, but I'm suspicious that it looks less-than-fantastic in person. (I really hope it looks that good in person. I miss Mordheim.)

PaintVagrant posted:Its fun as heck. This is correct. Some of the finer point are minus and plus flips. Say that my defense is 5 and I flip a 6 of rams. My total is 11(rams). Rams is the suit and may or may not effect anything. In order to hit me, you need an 11 minimum. If you hit 11 on the nose, you get a double minus on damage, if you get a 12-16 you have a single minus, 16-21 is normal, and 22+ is a plus flip. When you deal damage, you flip a card, plus one for each minus or plus you have. If you had minuses you take the LOWEST card, a plus is your choice of card. If you ever flip a black joker, you must take it and it is an autofail no matter what. It is also the only game where I have had a stampedeing horde of piglets overrun a deamon, while redneck idiots shot each other in the face and laughed at farting mosquitoes.

The MERCS basic rules just got released here. The devs (met them at Gencon) are pretty cool dudes, the full printed rulebook looks awesome, new models look great. Basically they will be getting a nice chunk of ducats from me.

I was going to pick PV's brains about how he painted his.. PV, was it... white undercoat, skorne red basecoat, devlan mud wash, drybrush something like blood red? I'm debating a black / yellow striping at the front end style scheme if I can't be arsed with the red. Anywhos, I'm itching to hit 'confirm' on an order for more spaceship type shenanigans but really don't have anyone to play against locally so might just see if I can get this big ship painted up first. All this is making me want to break out homeworld to get my space combat fix

Can I be a pain in the arse and ask what colour you used for highlighting the black? hoping it was one straight from the pot rather than mixed, I'm lazy like that and just curious to know which way you went.. I can't think of any greys that I have that are dark enough to highlight black without being way too stark if that makes sense :/ Also, I noticed a post saying you'd sold your dindrenzi to the guy who runs spartan games, is it any coincidence that the official pics of the dindrenzi heavy cruiser is in the same red / black strips scheme?

Send me a link, if you dont mind. Im curious to see if they are mine. For the black I used a mix, probably. I think I just drybrushed it.

Certainly beats the pants off of that rushed scheme they did for release Speaking of which, it looks like they've re-sculpted the big-rear end dindrenzi ship so it's no longer in two halves for that stupid gap down the middle. Thank buggery. What a pain in the arse..
