I hate to be that guy, but could you explain this one, and what the original meant? I just don't read this series of comics.

Mark Waid tweeted a frustration with how drat gloomy superhero comics are nowadays. He also writes a comic that is a superhero comic and is pretty drat gloomy, and that's the last page of it. So the implication is that the depressing comic mentioned in the tweet was his own.

More specifically, here's what the story of the issue is about : Irredeemable takes place in a world where the Plutonian (Superman, basically) completely loses his poo poo and goes on a killing spree. It's a good comic for the most part, but the last few issues have had so little to do with the title character and has been more about one superheroine whining about, "I knew about his one weakness and I never told anyone about it! I'm worse than Hitler!"

So they set up this big showdown between the heroes Plutonian has yet to pick off and the Plutonian himself. Also, the heroes are helped out by Orian. For the sake of simplicity, we'll call him a Darkseid stand-in. Everyone's so desperate to get rid of the Plutonian that they'll gladly team up with this powerful alien monster who wants to take over the world. Everyone but Qubit, who is the story's Reed Richards figure. He knows that if they kill Plutonian, Orian will be able to take over the world unchecked.

They all curbstomp Plutonian and one of the characters fires a one-of-a-kind bullet made of a special wax that can kill Plutonian. At the last second, Qubit opens up a portal in front of Plutonian's torso to catch the bullet and has a second portal appear in front of Orian's forehead. Orian's dead, Plutonian gets the hell out of there and everyone's calling out Qubit for being an rear end in a top hat.

Then the last page reveal shows that he opened up ANOTHER portal behind Orian so he can catch the bullet for later use. Which begs the question: WHY DID HE NOT JUST KILL THEM BOTH?

The short version is that Mark Waid said "_____ comic is stupid. I'm done." And my response is "no u"

He actually said he was tired of how bad and repetitive superhero comics have been lately. "Gloomy" is mis-characterizing it, but I guess you didn't want to flat-out say you think Irredeemable is the same lovely story you've read a dozen times?

I didn't want to say that because Irredeemable is my favorite comic book since All-Star Superman ended and me saying it's lovely would be me telling a lie.

EDIT:

Mark Waid posted:

...there is a new, recent cynicism to many of them that I find exhausting and mean-spirited and uninspiring and life-denying.

Doesn't seem a far leap from this to 'gloomy' to me.

Gavok posted:

Qubit, all throughout the issue, talks about how much he doesn't want to kill the Plutonian - that he thinks he can still reach him. This isn't the first time it's been brought up that Qubit thinks this, either.

I dunno, if I were trying to catch a bullet between two portals as it's passing through someone, that might be something I couldn't pull off twice.

If the guy can catch it after it passes through the other guy's head, chances are it lost too much momentum to kill someone else, either way.
