Seriously, what the hell's with this tendency to make all the pop-cultural references in these things 40 years old? I couldn't even tell you what Shirley MacLaine was famous for (other than being a crazy hippie). Eventually, the people that remember the era in question will all be dead, but the GOP will still be bashing Jane Fonda.

crime fighting hog posted:I'll admit, I didn't know what Chappaquiddick was until last year when Kennedy died. I'm 23 years old. Should I have felt bad? Most of America didn't know what Chappaquiddick was, frankly. The story broke on July 20, 1969 - the same day Neil Armstrong walked on the Moon. For some reason, people took more interest in the other story and conservatives have been yelling, "But did you hear what Ted Kennedy did?" for 40 years straight as a result.

Well as a first step: there's a large care/effort gap between actually writing one of these and forwarding them. And that same care/effort is what makes people just believe whatever gets emailed to them and looks supportive of their politics team. On top of that I get the feeling that 90% of these are written and forwarded as preaching-to-the-choir crap and they don't understand how it's taken by someone who isn't a tea party die-hard (or don't really care). They don't care about what the emails are saying, they don't care what it says about them that they're forwarding it. That said, a lot of these are offensive and callous beyond the realms of politics and there isn't an excuse for it. And there's a lot of people who genuinely get into these emails, but I'd be willing to bet the vast majority don't care half as much as the actual forwarded email makes it sound.

Intel&Sebastian posted:Something that would kill you if you were denied it = a luxury. Well, it's not like air, there's no guarantee particular individuals are going to die any earlier with it or without it. It is, quite technically, a luxury. And, for the "god has a plan" type person, health care may very well seem like a luxury since they're either good righteous people without health problems or they're enduring trials and god's going to save them or whatever delusion. They're insured by jesus or whoever already. Another way to look at it is from the perspective of a sucker. When people waste money on overpriced stuff, they tend to convince themselves it is very good stuff indeed because otherwise they would be stupid. Spending on health care may act in the same fashion, and anything that expensive must be a luxury by default. A third health care = luxury viewpoint is from that of the millions of starving people in the world who would very much like to not die next week from lack of food and to whom health care is a pure Maslovian luxury.

This one's a doozyquote:For a long time, I have noticed that the decor at the White House has changed since BHO moved in. The Oval Office is now stripped of the traditional red, white, and blue, and replaced with middle eastern wallpaper, drapes, and decor. The hallway that he walks out of to talk to the press now has middle eastern chairs, drapes, etc. And the thing that has bothered me the most is the bright yellow drape behind him every time he speaks from the white house. It has Arabic symbols on it and has been there from the beginning. I can't decide what I like best. 1.Giving the full name of all the presidents to make it not seem like they were being racist for specifying Obama's full name. 2.The carefully chosen photographs that show the red white and blue for everyone else. 3.Yellow with "islamic" symbols. 4.According to snopes Bush Sr. didn't have a red white and blue color scheme in his oval office either: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/photos/ovaloffice.asp 5.Once again if Obama is supposed to be a muslim spy wouldn't he be doing a hell of a lot more to cover up this fact?
