It may be the weakest but it's not an abortion of a film, it's at least enjoyable from start to finish. Plus the scene of Ripley walking into the room with all the failed clones is very cool to see.

I decided to stick with Kick-rear end and pick up ASM in the future. But holy hell, Best Buy puts their price stickers on the cardboard sleeves - sleeves that I don't throw away. The gummy crap left on the sleeve is loving IRRITATING. Thankfully, a careful touch, a damp paper towel and some scotch tape clean it off in a few minutes.

Why would you even consider getting rid of Kick rear end? That movie is great/the bluray is great/ and the bonus features are great.

Also the only thing I hate about best buy is the fact that the put the stickers on the slipcovers. It really doesn't make sense to me. Normally I can get them off completely clean with no issues but every now and again there is that one that gets all jacked up.

Surprise surprise, the Toy Story 3 cover art is just a hodgepodge of the actors' faces

It's up for pre-order now but you should probably wait since there will be the inevitable slew of great deals that comes with new Pixar titles.

Gary also just posted his review for Mona Lisa, which is barely a step up. Like, imagine a baby that just learned how to walk attempting to mimic an adult climbing a flight of stairs. Its stubby little stupid legs are obviously far too stunted for the ascent, so it trips on the first step, topples forward and splits its head open on the second step. Sure it's bleeding all over your beautiful hardwood stairs, wailing like a stuck pig and choking on its own snot, but its head has technically made it a step up. That's the Mona Lisa Blu-Ray.

e: a slightly more favorable review for Hamlet...

quote:

Another site has noted the transfer's heavy use of noise reduction, but frankly I'm having trouble seeing it. Yes, Claudius's face looks a little pink and waxy in the coronation scene, but standing right beside him is Gertrude, whose face doesn't have the same problem. Consequently I can't help but chalk it up to the production's make up. Likewise close-ups have a satisfying level of detail, with pores and fine facial hairs visible and uncompromised. If noise reduction has indeed been applied, it's very, very subtle. More obvious is the edge enhancement, which I believe will be more of an issue for viewers than the apparent detail in the picture.

Well I'm sure plenty agree on principle, but there has never been ANY rumor about The Incredibles coming out on BD anytime soon. Whereas there have been near constant rumors about Nemo (Amazon listings and dates, "inside sources," even "Coming Fall 2008" adverts at Disney events in 2008).

According to George Lucas himself, Star Wars will indeed be coming to Blu-Ray in 2011:

quote:

The big Blu-ray news today is George Lucas and Lucasfilm confirming that all six Star Wars films are coming to Blu-ray Disc next year and will include plentiful bonus features such as never-before-seen deleted scenes.

The bad news, at least for Star Wars and film purists, is versions of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in the set will be the modified special edition versions (re: Greedo shoots first) and not the original versions. Lucas explains the reasoning behind this decision to the New York Times.

"You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally," he said. "It's a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version.... [it's] kind of an oxymoron because the quality of the original is not very good."

I'm not convinced Lucas is being entirely forthcoming about his plans with this statement. There are only a few minutes of film that differ between the original and special edition release that would need to be cleaned up and transferred for Blu-ray. It sounds more like Lucas is putting additional dollars into supplemental materials now and will revisit the "original" trilogy a few years down the road - say 2015 or so - to re-energize the franchise/brand after making loads of cash off the first Blu-ray set.

Given Lucas' track record with multiple versions of Star Wars on VHS and DVD you have to imagine the door for the unaltered films on Blu-ray will never truly close.

The UK Blu-Ray of Picnic at Hanging Rock is jaw-dropping. Dr. Svet at Blu-Ray.com said it's "a prime contender for a Blu-ray release of the year." Review here.

Why not just offer the original cuts with unrestored, but fresh 1080p scans from the best available elements? They could be marketed as "archival editions" as if the viewer were watching an original 35mm print.

That is a logical course of action. But unfortunately I don't think there are, shall we say, practical reasons behind George's resistance.

Really.

The only reason he re-released the laserdisc of the original on DVD was to undercut the bootleg sales of it.

Really all the originals ever needed was a few minor touches here and there, where a scene looked really bad, and a few minor subtle CGI touches to make the world look more real and believable. The special editions really went overboard.

And I don't understand why they are including episodes 1 - 3 in the package. No one wants that poo poo.

Maybe it's because of the pause in the middle, but that quote makes George Lucas sound like he doesn't know the meaning of oxymoron. The upgraded version is the upgrade + the old original is in worse shape = oxymoron? Ah well, makes me grateful to have the original trilogy in those 2-disc sets that included the original films from the laserdisc source. Nothing a good ol' "Zoom" setting can't put right! Especially in the face of all that added special edition crap. Some more X-wings and TIE Fighters are the only additions those movies should've taken, and only to make the large-scale space battles busier.
