GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!

Just got my car back from getting the motor and tranny mounts swapped. The motor isn't dancing around the engine anymore! BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! Apparently when my dad used to own the car, he did a fantastic horrible job with maintaining the car. Such that at one point when I was borrowing the car prepurcahse, I checked the oil and there was only a slight drop on the dip stick. I put THREE quarts into the car to get it back to full. THREE quarts out of 4.8. :ughh:

So here's the really FANTASTIC news.

Rod Knock.

The very early onset of it, so I'm not completely screwed right this very second, but a rebuild will be ~$6k.

I've had the molex plug for my starter interrupt relay pop out of place while fixing a clutch pedal issue, and now I can't find where the drat wire plugs in. Of course, now I have the blinking check engine light and no go when I turn over the ignition. After checking that everything else on the car works but the starter and looking up the plug in a wiring diagram, I've determined that it should be somewhere above and behind the fuse box, but hell if I can find it in that wire jungle.

It's a six post black connector, and I really need some help finding where this drat plug is hiding and taunting me at. :argh:

Was hoping to find a full engine rather than doing a build.

If I were to get an ej255 would that be a fairly simple swap? Any idea if I would need to replace my ecu to support it? Obviously I'd need to flash a different map onto my current 03's cpu, etc.

There is a cheat code of sorts to enable or disable the audible alarm. I think you buckle and unbuckle your seatbelt like 30 times in a minute.

Since I did the AP, the next thing was a new DP & exhaust. Well...

It took me a day and a half, but it's finally done. The results are ... interesting. The ride is much more quiet, the power feels almost linear. The new O2 sensor fixed my idle problems, and the engine doesn't sputter and complain going up a slight hill in 6th at 40mph.

Detailed. The interior when I got it from the OP was filthy (dirty water stains on the rear seats, chocolate ground into the carpet). I took it to a local detailer that came highly recommended and she did a fantastic job on the exterior as well. Over seven hours of work overall - and this is her medium package, with no options.

Hi everyone,

My wife and are considering a 2011 Outback (3.6 Limited). We've driven it, and really like it, and were ready to tell the dealership to start looking for the color/options we wanted when I came across a bunch of stuff about steering wheel shake at highway speeds. From what I've read, it doesn't happen on all 2010/11 Outbacks, just some, and it seems random. It also looks like Subaru isn't sure what's actually wrong, and the things they've tried for people who have the problem don't work, and are only done to mask the problem.

The Outback is our first choice, but I'm definitely more than a little worried we'll find what we want, and will have to refuse it because of the problem, or worse, it will develop the problem a few thousand miles in. Has anyone had any experience with the steering wheel shake on the current Outbacks, or have any insight into what's really going on? Thanks!

If you've driven it on the highway and it doesn't steer funny, it's fine. I think the problem might be more driver than car. Subaru has no clue what it is and they're throwing everything at it. If it isn't driver, it could just be some weird issue on the car that creates a resonance. It isn't happening on all the cars so it might be a bad batch of wheels that has some issues with temperature changes or something hard to track down like that.

I'd say go for it -- the issue doesn't seem common on the boards. Given all that people do on the internet is complain about poo poo or try to find solutions to problems if it was widespread the LegacyGT forums would be crashing left and right. Mine can wander sometimes because the stock tires love to pick up grooves in the road and follow them but if I'm on flat asphalt, the car drives completely true and has been doing so for 5000 miles now.

From what I've heard the cobb OTS tunes, while safe, are very conservative in terms of power. If you go stage 2 (dp, exhaust) I'd suggest getting a custom pro-tune for the car. At the same time, drive around using the OTS cobb map and see if you like it. You can get an e-tune usually for around $150-200, or if you have a tuner nearby you typically a quick tune (customized OTS with an hour or so of dyno tune time) for around $250.

I got an estimate on a pro-tune with Tim Bailey at Surgeline and it was going to be $375 or $275 with the purchase of an access port.

Really, there are only two compelling reasons to go with an Accessport over a Opensource tune as far as I'm concerned:

* You can uninstall it for warranty reasons, service, etc...
* It's a decent datalogger

Using it as a gauge is impractical given that (at least I personally) will not leave it exposed in my car in fear of it being stolen and stuck with a tune. I'm happy to show you mine and let you fiddle around with it if you want to get together sometime and you can see if it's features and functions are worth it for you.

I actually use mine as a gauge all the time. I have a cellphone mount that I stuck it in and hid the OBD-II connector under the dash, fishing the USB port through the gap in the dash plastics. I disconnect the AP itself and either hide it or take it with me whenever I leave my car. So all a potential thief will see is an odd USB cable hanging out next to a cellphone mount. Could be for an mp3 player, could just be a charging cable, they'll never know.

Plus theft is why you have comprehensive coverage with your auto insurance. Right, you do have that don't you? Also, even if your AP is stolen, Cobb can replace it (for a fee) with another unit. So you wont be stuck with anything.

Not sure I've mentioned enough just how much I enjoy my access port...

I guess I'm just lazy - I already have to pull my cell, radar detector, bag, and so forth out of the car and adding another thing is just :effort:

Of course I have comprehensive, but my deductible is 500 bucks, the price of an accessport basically. Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all anti-accessport in fact I always suggest it over open source tunes, I'm just voicing one opinion on it's uses outside of flashing the ECU.

I wanted to ask this, and also ask if anyone knows what the trigger weight is for the passenger airbag on the '10 Outback. My wife weighs about 110 lbs., and I've seen some reports that people weighing as much as 135 lbs. didn't trigger the airbag to go on. I don't want to scrape her off the windshield, so this worries me some.

I do have to say, after test driving a VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI today, while I love the Outback, I wish Subaru would get a diesel engine. I got 50MPG on the test drive with an automatic in stop and go city driving, which was pretty cool. The Subaru has way more room in the back seat, and a bigger trunk as well.

Supposing that it's using the same trigger as an '09 Impreza, then yes, I can confirm through first-person testing that 110lbs has, every single time, activated the airbag in my Impreza.

I'm starting to think it's a very vocal minority, and it most likely won't be a problem. We're going back on Saturday to drive a few without a salesman so we can really take our time and make sure we feel comfortable, and then hopefully when he does get ours in (he did find the color, equipped like we want, so we're happy we don't have to order one), it'll be fine too. So got a couple of possibilities for replacement motors for my 03. My top option is the motor out of Bob Log's poor wrx, a built 2.5/2.0 hybrid. Another option, if more expensive, would be a JDM v8 sti motor complete with turbo and ECU. Both of these I'll be bolting to my stock 5 speed (can't afford an sti 6 speed). What sort of nuances and difficulties could I expect from the JDM motor? Wiring up AVCS, using my stock gauge cluster, CEL's from wiz bang stuff that's on the STI but not on the wrx?

Also, are oil filters etc interchangeable on the ej207 block? Like could I just get filters for my ej205 and use them on the ej207 motor etc?
