In that interview he seems really excited about how the new look of the movie turned out. I'll withhold judgment until some screenshots pop up.

I don't trust him.

He talks about bringing in the same colorist that worked on Avatar with him and "it was shot on a high speed negative, a new negative that didn't pan out too well and got replaced the following year so it was pretty grainy...we got rid of all the grain and it's sharper and clearer and more beautiful than it's ever looked". That doesn't sound good at all.

It's probably Lowry Digital... they processed Avatar for IMAX. If they worked on Aliens, there's little to worry about. They have the best noise reduction system in the world.

Here's what he said for the people who don't feel like watching the video.

quote:

Interviewer: Do you have anything to do with the new Aliens stuff they are putting out?

Cameron: I just did a complete remaster of Aliens personally, uh, with the same colorist I worked with from Avatar and it's spectacular. We went in and completely denoised and degrained it, up-rezzed it, color corrected it from end to end, every frame and it looks amazing. It looks better than it did in theaters, originally, because it was shot on a high speed negative, a new negative that didn't pan out too well and got replaced the following year so it was pretty grainy...we got rid of all the grain and it's sharper and clearer and more beautiful than it's ever looked and we did that to the long version.

What purchasing decisions do fellow UKers make who have region free players? (My setup is HTPC with AnyDVD HD). Are most UK discs pretty much the same as US ones now (although sometimes with PAL extras? I'm kinda used to it now, but it's not really preferable) or is it worth going for import the majority of the time? BBFC stickers are awful, but let's be honest... most Blu-Ray art is also terrible and covered in quotes and other poo poo that doesn't make one iota difference to my purchasing decision.

Any particular favourite sites to get good prices/speed/lack of customs heat from? I used to use PlayUSA a lot but their site is still lacking a good separation of Blu-Ray and it's quite annoying. Might have to skim SA Mart for any UK people with collections for sale...

The price of meat has just gone up, and your old lady has just gone down

The thing is, that grain is there. Aliens is, as you say, grainy. You take out the grain, it's not like there's film underneath it they can get to magically somehow. If you had something that did nothing but literally remove grain, there'd be perpetual streaks of empty space from where grain used to be. So grain removal also involves replacing the grain with something artificial that tries to match its surroundings as closely as possible but as we all know the state of the art loving sucks and anyway the whole problem is that the grain is part of the film. It's hard to come up with any coherent analogies, it's just part of the picture. To make an HD master you want a really detailed transfer that takes advantage of the expanded bandwidth and improved compression algorithms we have now. Removing details on purpose like that only looks passingly good when done subtly, and looks awful when done to a huge degree. See Predator: Ultimate Hunter edition for the worst example I've ever personally seen.

Except that A) These scenes all look horrible and stick out like a sore thumb and B) They hosed with a lot of existing scenes. I'm not saying its impossible to watch, but I wont be buying/watching it because its a matter of principle. Wanting the actual original films minus horrible 90s CG meddling isn't an egregious request.

It's debated on that, considering the first re-release with the changes was after his death and simply jump-cut out the offending footage. There was also a mid-1960s Disneyland episode that had the entire Pastoral segment uncut. Disney can at least task their animation department to digitally re-animate the character to less offensive instead of making the image quality turn to poo poo by cropping the frame.

The 2000 DVD's alterations were probably a last minute decision since the version history notes on the Legacy supplement DVD actually mentions the Pastoral edits on the 1967-1990 versions and NOT being made to the 2000 version. The touch-ups are amateurish at best (you can see mattes wiggling on a few shots and one shot looks like they used clone stamp in Photoshop).

I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting it uncut, or wrong for wanting a better job disguising it - I just don't think it's likely. It'll most likely be how it was on the last DVD.

Gonna agree with this. I wouldn't pay $50 for Firefly, but my local used store always has a copy of the series on Blu-ray for $29 and regularly have sales that make it cheaper than that. It's worth that just to cut down on the number of discs, and there is a definite picture and sound improvement. I held out for the longest time because of the issue with the special effects being low def renders, but it's not bad, they just look obviously soft.

Did you keep the cardboard case the Bat Pod came in? I'd just use that, personally. Otherwise, I think your only other choice is to buy a generic empty Blu-Ray case (which a few specialty sites sell, but always seem to be sold out of - just use eBay). You can always print Blu-Ray sleeves yourself.

I'm not a hundred percent sure on this, but I believe that on the bluray.com forums people were saying there is a site where that guy and some others upload the custom covers, and you just buy tokens(?) from the site and then different covers cost a different amount to download for printing.

I'm like 90% sure that's what he said but I don't remember seeing a link or anything to the site. Could always PM him on bluray.com

I saw that site, you can easily find the sites where you can get his work just by googling for his username - bpmford. I can understand why he has removed general access to his covers because they get plastered across custom cover sites where you have to donate to download them. If other people are making money from his work then he should too. His requirements for sending them via PM are being a member of Blu-Ray.com for over 6 months and being a friend or a friend of a friend.

I have seen him around on the forums there but don't really send anyone friend request. I'm sure he probably doesn't approve all of them.

I like to have nice looking covers on blurays but I don't ever really see myself downloading custom covers and switching them all out. Too much work for me, that's valuable time I can spend watching the movies.
