Restored transfer, audio commentary, visual essays, program on visual/sound effects, interview with music arranger, a home movie with Chaplin in it, The Rink short film, More!, and an essay and assorted Chaplin writings. That's a hell of a lot. It'd probably be worth it just for the visual upgrade.

The David Raskin interview is from the old CBS-FOX laserdisc (and later Image DVD), so that's a good sign stuff like the Carl Davis re-recording on City Lights (and his interview) will show up. Modern Times and The Night of the Hunter are day-one preorders.

I'm wondering if Criterion is going to use the original '36 cut of Modern Times, with the longer nonsense song and the original opening credits. They could easily seamlessly branch the two since a 35mm positive exists. This is probably going to brought up on their blog since the multiple cuts of Chaplin's films are a touchy subject for some.

BFI is releasing Mr. Hulot's Holiday and Playtime on BluRay in November. Playtime seems to have all the Criterion extras carried over. Hulot has two cuts of the film, an interview with Richard Lester (!), and trailers. So, I'm guessing Hulot will get a release in December from Criterion? Looks like the two cuts are the original 1953 version and Tati's 1978 re-release. Egbert Souse fucked around with this message at 04:05 on Aug 19, 2010 |

It wouldn't surprise me if Criterion released M. Hulot's Holiday soon, and BFI putting out a BD certainly provides some evidence that it's likely. But I wouldn't necessarily count on December - sometimes there is a big gap between UK releases and Criterion's eventual release (see The Red Shoes). And hell, they didn't even do HD releases of Make Way For Tomorrow and The Only Son, and the UK got those. So we'll see I suppose.

I was saved on this one. I bought Breathless on DVD like a week before it was announced, and with M. Hulot's Holiday, I was literally going to buy it the next day when I heard of the potential Blu-ray.

I'd watch an 1 hour and 45 minute Americanized version of Stalker. It'd have Kurt Russel as the bearded and run down Stalker escorting a young idealistic archeologist/generic scientist through the zone. They attempt to get to the center before the government's super secret ninja black ops people beat them there. When they get to the center of the apocalyptic wasteland it's revealed that the city is actually a bombed out Washington DC and they're trying to get to the Declaration of Independence which grants wishes. Of course it doesn't and everyone dies of radiation poisoning. $100 mil gross, guaranteed. EDIT: Seriously though, how long do I have to wait for a Blu Ray version of Stalker?

FitFortDanga posted:Criterion doesn't design the Wes Anderson covers, Anderson's brother does. Even more than that, as far as I know, Criterion doesn't do a lot of design internally. I believe most of their releases are designed by freelancers that come onto their radar somehow. The Hausu cover was originally a poster done for the Belcourt in Nashville by a local designer (and, incidentally, the guy who plays drums for Ben Folds), which led to him getting more work like that Chaplin Blu-Ray. That might be different for some of the more standardized sets like Eclipse, but they definitely hire out of the company for that sort of stuff more often than not.

I wouldn't hold my breath. Ray's films are like the white whale of Criterion releases. They've been trying to get something done for years and years. I'd welcome anything at this point.

They did say they're working on it, and chances are if they release anything by Ray it'll be the Apu trilogy. As much as I'd love the full-blown treatment of the rest of his work (especially Charulata, Mahanagar, and the "Calcutta trilogy") probably the best we can hope for is an Eclipse set. But I think the Apu trilogy is forthcoming, it's just a matter of when.
