Well I finished the online assessment for DS special agent. Apparently I passed but I still need to wait to see if I am "competitive" for the next step. Oh I hope so. Apparently I know some people as friends of a friend of a friend in DS, hopefully I'll get the chance to talk to them and hear a little more about the job. Edit: What is it with the State department and these ridiculous HR, managerial jargon questions? Answers could be a mix between common sense and just "maximizing your dimensions" or "pushing the envelope". Kind of like a mix between watching Top Gun and The Office. Although I would bet that they hire mostly former military/law enforcement even though they state that they accept people from all backgrounds.

Woah, just found this thread because DustingDuvet linked it in his Resume thread, awesome! I'm graduating from a Ph.D. program in about a year and starting a barrage of applications. Does anybody have any insight into the DR-scale of pay grades? I haven't seen anyone mention them here and I think it is just something odd that the AFRL uses: http://jobview.usajobs.gov/GetJob.aspx?JobID=89012896 The job description is so abstract I'm not exactly sure what to claim as far as experience goes. The questionnaire explicitly asks you what is the minimum DR grade you'd work for, and I'm not sure if saying DR-2 is a bad or a good idea. Basic Pay Range DR-02: $59,481-$93,400 Basic Pay Range DR-03: $82,094-$116,013 Basic Pay Range DR-04: $104,707-$129,517 Each position has a specific pay band attached to it. If you interview for a DR-02 position, you'll get DR-02 pay. Likewise for DR-03 or DR-03 positions. DR-03 and DR-04 are more senior level positions. DR-02 is *probably* the only one you'd be qualified for without any work experience, but you'd really have to call the POC on the listing and ask them about it. They can answer all the specific questions.

Not really much volunteering. Applying at a State level has been an equally slow process, though, so I'll definitely look into it. I'm hoping to get more into a field work aspect, not so much the data side, though I'm sure I'll be doing plenty of that regardless of where I go. Thanks for the help!

I am starting grad. school in the fall (MA in History) and I am starting to put together a check-list of things I need to do in order to be awesome enough to "hopefully" get a job as a government analyst once I'm out. By virtue of my degree I'll be exiting with a proven knowledge of a foreign language (french), so I hopefully I have that base covered. I know I should put some volunteer time into 'something,' but I don't know what would be appropriate. As an analyst I imagine that it should focus on writing, but does it necessarily have to focus on/or be with the federal government?

How does retirement transfer over from military to federal? I only plan on staying in the military for a total of 8 or 12 years, but at that point it's kind of stupid to not stay in for the retirement money at 20 years. From what I hear, you can "buy back" your service years when working for the federal government. What the hell does that mean?

General FERS retirement information http://www.opm.gov/retire/pre/fers/index.asp I had 9 years military service. I had to pay a percentage of my total military pay. I'm under a special retirement coverage, so that 9 years adds on to the end of my retirement. If you're under regular retirement, once you pay the deposit to "buy back" the years, they count towards retirement. As soon as you join, they immediately count for leave accrual purposes. It's a good thing I'm a patient woman or I would have completely lost my mind by now. I applied for a curatorial assistant job at the Freer gallery (Smithsonian) on June 1st. On July 14th, I received a notice that I had met the criteria and would be notified in the "near future" about whether or not I would get an interview. So now it's almost September and I'm staaarting to wonder if they've actually filled the position and will never tell me. My online application tells me no further details. At what point would it be appropriate for me to actually go to the drat gallery and try to talk to someone? Out of all the positions I've applied for, this one seems like it would be the most fulfilling and goddamn awesome. fffffffffffffff

I don't think it hurts to follow-up (there's even a form on my "Job Search History" thing with NSEP about what you did to follow up on your application), although I'm not sure the exact etiquette... haven't had a good reason to follow up yet  Obviously you don't want to come off as pushy/desperate, but just something polite to let them know you're definitely still interested in the position, etc.

Don't sweat the security clearance so much. Some agencies hire you before the clearance is done (as usually you will be given an interim clearance), and keep you around for the ~3-6months doing other tasks, or job training, etc, until it goes final. NGA is one of these agencies. edit: you're spot on about the hiring fair, though.

While there are some cases where they are dumping you into a pool for the future, those hiring events are called hiring events because they do have billets to fill. They interview and select people to put into those billets. Hiring managers are there with selection authority. That doesn't mean you got hired, but someone else did. You could have been referred to another office, however, for a phone interview or in-person interview, or indeed for the general pool you mentioned, if you were not considered or selected for the vacant billets they were filling at the event. As for your clearance, yes, it could be 6-18 months for final adjudication of your SSBI. Adjudications are also not taking as long anymore as they once did. Contrary to popular belief this isn't the unobtainable holy grail of federal cleared jobs. Typically it seems like it helps to have a clearance for these jobs because experience comes alongside it; it's the experience that can qualify you. This is not as true for the private sector, where a clearance--while still not the holy grail-- can be slightly more important to already have. edit: to be clear, they are there to fill both future and current needs. Then you had to fill out an application online, and were told after you submitted it that you'd hear back whether you were going to be referred to a hiring manager or not within 5 weeks.
