I like how she didn't even attempt to avoid the police car, or the car ahead of them just before the impact. It's a good thing that guy swerved out of the way.

Yeah at this point it looks like the cop is the one going the wrong way, though maybe it's because we thankfully don't carpool lanes here. I'd like to see if her lawyer is going to use this as a defense.

That would be a hell of a desperate attempt from the lawyer, but might as well I guess!

It's totally bizarre to see those short moments in time before someone had an "ah-ha".

Sponge! posted:Yes but does it use less energy than the oil it makes contains? If not, then its not very functional. This is not my forte unfortunately, so bear with my back-of-excel sheet calculations: 1kg of plastic makes 1l of oil, according to the video, or ~0.850 kg. Let's go along with this. Let's say we need to heat the plastic by 100 deg. C. to start the evaporation, as I couldn't anything on this. But even 200 or 300 degrees shouldn't change the result. Plastic has a thermal capacity of ~ 1500 Joules per kg degree Celsius, so we need 100x that - 150 kJ. 1kg of oil (depending on the type, I guess) has the energy density of 35-40 mega Joules, so we spent 150 kJ to get 30-35 MJ of energy. Sound decent to me! (unless I hosed up somewhere) Contraband posted:Yeah but those lines are white, which indicates that it is a lane separator from another lane that is going in the same direction. That would be a hell of a desperate attempt from the lawyer, but might as well I guess! Must be regional differences, all lane markings are white around here. Also I don't think we have "wrong way" signs at the off-rapmps, but then, I haven't tried getting onto one yet But yeah, I know it would be pretty desperate, but desperate defendants demand desperate defenses.

Energy aside, it's another way to eliminate plastic waste.
|
# ? Aug 24, 2010 20:25 |

But that plastic waste should be recycled, and not converted back into crude light oil. Why bother when it could just remain plastic and turn into something else instead of being, say, burned?

FogHelmut posted:Energy aside, it's another way to eliminate plastic waste. It doesn't really eliminate plastic waste though, it just extracts the oil and leaves everything else. Plastic is a lot more than just oil, it also contains cellulose, starch, silicones, teflon, PVC, and various binding agents to make those long polymer chains. If all of that is left behind from the machine after it extracts oil then it's not much better than what we have now.

Sponge! posted:Yes but does it use less energy than the oil it makes contains? If not, then its not very functional. If it takes less energy to recycle the plastic into oil than it does to transport new oil there it's worth it. Kind of like making aluminum.

Muffinpox posted:If it takes less energy to recycle the plastic into oil than it does to transport new oil there it's worth it. Kind of like making aluminum. It doesn't. Aluminum is the most abundant elemental metal on earth but it is never found as just pure elemental aluminum. Producing new aluminum is where all of the cost of aluminum is and why it is more expensive than iron despite being more abundant. This is why it is cheaper to just remelt already made aluminum. Plus it really is as simple as that. Apply heat, pour. Plastic is so cheap to make it seems that it wouldn't share this same incentive and even if it as simply as heat until it boils and it turns to light oil, there's the issue of what is left over.
