I'm probably going to Netflix Metropolis first.

I just tried watching it for the first time on Netflix and gave up after thirty minutes because I couldn't believe how terrible the quality of the film looked. It's like trying to watch a movie through a telescope.

In a rare bit of sensible pricing, Best Buy ad scans indicate that the Lionsgate BB exclusive titles will be released at $10 or less (running from this Sunday through the first week in stores). As a reminder, those movies are as follows, from the blu-ray.com thread:
http://forum.blu-ray.com/movie-tv-deals/150612-best-buy-weekly-ad-august-29-september-4-2010-a.html

quote:

Blair Witch - $9.99
2001 Maniacs - $.7.99
Open Water/Open Water 2 - $7.99
Hard Candy - $9.99
High Tension - Unknown at this time. Most likely $9.99
Secretary - Unknown at this time. Most likely $9.99
Wonderland - Unknown at this time. Most likely $9.99
Bad Lieutenant - Unknown at this time. Most likely $9.99

Also, Anchorman will be $20 and Deep Blue Sea will be $13. It's weird looking at a Best Buy ad and thinking to myself "hey, that's downright reasonable", but I like it.

I wonder how the Blair Witch BD will turn out. Wasn't it shot on 16mm and, like, consumer-grade video? The 16mm parts might benefit, but I guess at $9.99 it's hard to complain since I don't already own it.

I believe most of it was shot on Hi-8, so I expect it to look somewhat similar to 28 Days Later.

The sound will benefit most, I imagine.

Which works because really 90% of the actual frightening aspects of that movie come across through the sound and the visuals usually end up being a letdown.

Apparently, in addition to the basic Toy Story 3 blu-ray and the 4-disc TS3 blu-ray, Disney is also releasing a 10-disc Toy Story trilogy box set. The way I understand it, all three movies will be getting a blu-ray, a standard DVD and a digital copy, and TS3 will be getting an additional blu-ray copy.

How many copies of Toy Story does a person need????

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YUC2FE?tag=bluray-012-20

e: However, I'm tempted to buy my copy at Target because it comes with a Buzz Lightyear case.

Disney has just officially confirmed the Blu-ray Disc release (and DVD re-release) of Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 on 11/30. You'll be able to buy a 4-Disc Blu-ray Special Edition (SRP $45.99) and a 2-Disc DVD Special Edition (SRP $39.99). Each will include both films. Let's start with the DVD, which will include Fantasia (fully restored) on one disc, and Fantasia 2000 on the other. Extras on the DVDs will include the Musicana and Disney Family Museum features, along with audio commentaries. Both of these discs will also be included in the 4-disc Blu-ray, which will add a Blu-ray version of each film. Exclusive features on these Blu-rays will include the Dali & Disney: A Date with Destino documentary, the long awaited Destino film itself, The Schultheis Notebook, Disney's Virtual Vault (BD-Live), an Interactive Art Gallery and DisneyView. The aspect ratio for Fantasia will be the original 1.33:1, while Fantasia 2000 will be 1.78:1. Audio on the Blu-rays will be in 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (48 KHz/24-bit), along with 5.1 DEHT tracks in French and Spanish. You'll get English SDH, as well as French and Spanish subtitles.

Price-wise, I'm betting it wouldn't make much difference. You'll probably be able to get it for $20 or less on release day with the inevitable $10 coupon.

Egbert Souse
Nov 6, 2008

I like how the loaded BluRay of both films is half the price of the original DVD set. There's going to be some awesome deals on top of that. I seem to be able to get $40 used for the DVD set, so that's like a free upgrade.

FYI, Toy Story 3's 4-disc edition is $21 if you get a certain promo coupon.
