Sporadic posted:How's Bad Lieutenant and Secretary look? Just skipped around both for a couple of minutes to get a quick impression. Bad Lieutenant is dirty as hell. Specks all over the print, grain everywhere, lots of soft shots, and so on. I haven't seen it in a while, but I imagine this very much what the film is supposed to look like. Secretary is covered in a healthy sheet of grain throughout and looks very nice. No apparent digital manipulation on either title, as we've come to expect from Lionsgate catalog releases. All in all, I'd say that for $10 apiece, they're both well worth the purchase. One thing I noticed about Secretary is that it appears to be the unrated cut, even though there's no indication that it should be. According to IMDB the runtime of the theatrical cut is 104 minutes, but the runtime on the Blu-Ray is 111 minutes.

Just got back from Best Buy with a lot of those movies as well. Anchorman is loving LOADED. 2 versions of the movie, plus an entirely different movie (Wake Up Ron Burgundy - in full 1080p no less), almost an hour of deleted scenes, ALL the extras from the DVD and HD-DVD, plus new extras, plus some trading cards, plus a pretty funny little booklet. Awesome buy for $20.

Just so everyone knows, there's a big sale on Bestbuy.com on quite a few titles, and while picking up Anchorman and Secretary today, they had a section with these titles specifically marked down, so they're 100% guaranteed to be at this price in-store. Stolen from the HDD bargain thread. $7.99 Terminator 3 Interview with a Vampire Reservoir Dogs Trick R Treat Freddy vs Jason Swordfish Planet Hulk Crank 3:10 to Yuma $9.99 Underworld Superbad Tears of the Sun Beowulf Director Cut The Prestige $10.49 Forgetting Sarah Marshall $12.99 Crank 2 $13.79 The Bourne Identity (combo) The Bourne Supremacy (combo) The Bourne Ultimatum (combo) $14.99 Moon Ended up grabbing 3:10 to Yuma on my way out.

I'm sure this has been discussed at length here before, but is there any reason to hold off on buying The Man With No Name trilogy (especially at that price)? I've seen some "meh, could be better" type reviews, but is there any reason to think anything's better coming out in the near (~5 years or so) future? I've got the DVDs and they look just fine, but I imagine those movies could look outright amazing on BD, and 30 dollars is NOT a lot of dollars.

The Italy ones are better than the US releases but there is nothing suggesting they will hit our shores any time soon. (The US one is MGM, the Italy one is Ripley's Home Video/Mondo Home Entertainment) I don't see any reason to not get it at that price if you are a fan.

I've tried searching for it (even using my limited Italian as a last resort) to no avail, so I'm hoping someone here might have an answer for me. Is there any news of The Conformist coming to Blu or should I just stop holding out and buy the dvd?
|
# ? Aug 30, 2010 04:27 |

A ton of Paramount DVDs went out of print, so there's no telling if they'll go back in or get licensed. The Conformist looks terrific on DVD, but new copies are kind of expensive now. Perhaps Lionsgate has the rights since they licensed a ton of films from Paramount. Finally sat down for Doctor Zhivago tonight. Beautiful film, but I wasn't prepared for how well the restoration was handled. It looked like a new film for the most part.

Another distributor folds to Sony:quote:In a major coup, resurgent Image Entertainment Aug. 30 said it has inked a multiyear deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to allow the studio to manufacture and distribute all of its Blu-ray Disc and DVD releases. Separately, Sony agreed to license an undisclosed number of titles to Image for distribution. This is great news imo. Sony does a terrific job with all the Weinstein stuff. Hard Candy reviewed

This is excellent news. This explains Criterion's unusually high-profile New Hollywood box set. I'm guessing Criterion will end up with a lot of these titles, especially Adaptation. (Note: Criterion DVDs and BluRays are distributed by Image)

Man, I would love to see some of those titles go into the Criterion collection and/or get some new extras/commentaries. Makes me wish that Ebert had his new robo-Ebert voice working so he could do commentary for Adaptation.
