Why doesn't he stop lightning-ing himself when it starts melting his face, or was he trying to make some kind of point? I'm pretty sure he had won over Anakin at that point without having to permanently disfigure himself.

It was always my impression that the force of being hit by the lightning made him unable to stop projecting said lightning, but then again I don't have the novelization so it's possible that it is explained there.

I do have the novelizations of the OT and, for some reason, Phantom Menace. Is TPM's novelization worth reading? Will I hate it as much as the movie?

This probably wouldn't have worked, because Grievous has those magnets in his feet that allowed him to cling to the metal surface of the ship in the beginning of the movie as well. And crushing him with something very heavy would take a lot of force energy and time to manipulate (note: Yoda in AotC), and he is made of durasteel so it could probably endure such an attack if it were successful.

The only 3 Jedi/Sith we saw ever able to pull off something like that in any of the movies were Vader, Sidious, and Yoda, three of some of the most powerful Force users ever.

Again, gently caress the EU and cartoons for making every Jedi look like supermen/space wizards who control like a video game character

quote:

For me the 'Jedi not using the Force' thing is less 'they're not ending the battles in half a second with overpowered force powers' and more 'oh poo poo, we need to end this fight quickly - Force power'. You see it loads during the prequels and TV series.

TPM: Obi-wan and Qui-Gon use force speed (for the only time ever in G-cannon material) to get away from the destroyer droids, then forget to use it to catch up with Darth Maul in the final duel.

RotS: Obi-wan remembers that he can force push Grievous about ten minutes too late, and also ignores the fact that he can push him down a several hundred foot sink hole.

I'll agree that the fights are just horrible excuses to do fancy acrobatics, but I don't see how they are as bad as people are making them out to be. The force speed thing I'll give you, but you could argue that using it would probably require concentration/focus. Concentration/focus which a Jedi would probably need to keep from having a Sith hack him to pieces.

As for Grievous, people have already given good explanations.

In my mind, I always rationalized the lack of crazy Force usage in the OT duels (apart from ESB) as just two advanced users countering each other. Ie, Vader may be trying to choke Obiwan but the latter is countering it with his own ability. If one reaches out to throw something with the Force his opponent counters to prevent him. That's why Vader could pull welded metal off of walls and toss them in ESB--Luke couldn't stop him. Vader even says before they start that "The Force is strong with you...but you are not a Jedi yet"--implying that he could already sense his inability to control the Force in combat.

Also, I think in the Thrawn trilogy, someone (Lando?) talks Luke into confusing the minds of some enemy (TIE?) pilots which they mop up easily. But Luke senses he's dancing close to the dark side and says he can't do it again. That may be an alternative explanation for why Jedi don't turn straight to the force in combat. At least that would be one way of interpreting Yoda's teaching that a Jedi only uses the Force for defense.

But my Star Wars experience is limited to the movies, Thrawn Trilogy, those books with that wanker Kyp, and kickass video games like TIE Fighter, X-Wing, and all things Kyle Katarn. Either I don't know anything about Star Wars or I got out of the EU in time to still be able to form decent explanations for things not starring Hayden Christensen. The more I read these threads, the more I think it's the latter.

Ninja edit: Forgot KOTOR and SNES games. Hell, the Star Wars universe would be better off left to video game makers as long as you're relaxed about canon so that Starkiller comes off as just a Mary Sue and not the Messiah of the Gospel of Lucas.

No, Palpatine clearly wasn't being attacked. Anakin walked in past three dead Jedi to hear, "You are under arrest, my lord." Mace has Palpatine at lightsaber point, but he's demanding a surrender. He's not swinging. He's not even moving. We then get one line, ONE, which references the supposed Jedi takeover (which itself references back to ONE scene where Palpatine makes the accusation without a shred of evidence). Mace brings the conversation right back to the Sith. Keep in mind that the only reason he's even there is because Anakin told him that Palpatine was a Sith in the first place.

Then comes the lightning. Mace blocks this with ease, and fry face just keeps hitting himself. I know Palpatine is trying to look sympathetic, but he ends up looking incompetent. Only after this does Mace suddenly lose all faith in the courts and demand a summary execution. This serves its purpose in forcing Anakin to take sides, but it comes completely out of left field. To quote himself from the previous film, as a jedi "he couldn't assassinate anyone. It's not in his character."

Finally, Anakin's choking of Padme isn't irony. It's just stupidity. Murdering someone is pretty obviously the opposite of preventing them from dying. And Padme losing the will to live isn't touching. It's just poor writing.

Vader also was clearly effected when he did that stunt too. The momentary lapses in concentration, or even just the pauses in his saber attack, were clearly visible. If Luke were anything more than an out-of-control, stupid hick who stumbled across a lightsaber, Vader could have been in trouble.

Look at Dooku, a pretty powerful guy, when he busted out lightning for the first time. It wasn't just something he whipped out. If Obi and Anakin weren't incapacitated or if Yoda wasn't so far away, he probably would have gotten a saber to the face.

The last part of that sentence kind of sounds like something from a junior novelization (the best novelizations, of course)

The Chancellor was being hurt by his own lightning! He was very mad. "Help me, Anakin!" The Chancellor said. Anakin was confused.

Touchdown Boy

I saw my friend there out on the field today, I asked him where he's going, he said "All the way."
Wasn't the point to push Anakin to the dark side fully and make him Palpatines ally/puppet?

If so, Anakin fearing that Mace was going to kill (accidentally or on purpose) 'the one person who can save Padme(tm)' probably made him do what he did to Mace Windu thus easing his fall to the dark side quite considerably - hes just killed a high ranking Jedi, whats the excuse for that going to be...? Also Palpatine is probably using the force to confuse Anakin, he will expect Anakin to lash out in fear to save Palpatine so he can help save Padme.
Palpatine is only faking the hurt to make Anakin pressured into choosing now, he can probably stop whenever.

Not saying its perfect, but it makes at least a lick of sense.

Yeah Anakin is a bit retarded though...

As for the whole using Force Powers while duelling. I read somewhere (forgive me if this is bullshit non canon) that it takes a lot of force ability to duel. Jedi/Sith use energy scoping out the other person, 'seeing' the fight unfold and trying to catch a glimpse at weakness. Im not saying its a great excuse, but there could literally be so much going on we cant see that force powers generally go out the window against two equal/closely matched opponents.
