Is he delusional? He acts like he beat this dudes rear end or something. That's not what I am gathering after seeing that video.

Full-frame/35mm sensor on the right

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Press-Release/Canon-Develops-Largest-CMOS-Sensor.aspx

quote:

TOKYO, August 31, 2010—Canon Inc. announced today that it has successfully developed the world's largest*1 CMOS image sensor, with a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm. Because its expanded size enables greater light-gathering capability, the sensor is capable of capturing images in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a professional-model digital SLR camera.

At 202 x 205 mm, the newly developed CMOS sensor is among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300 mm) wafer, and is approximately 40 times the size of Canon's largest commercial CMOS sensor.*2

In the past, enlarging the size of the sensor resulted in an increase in the amount of time required between the receiving and transmission of data signals, which posed a challenge to achieving high-speed readout. Canon, however, solved this problem through an innovative circuit design, making possible the realization of a massive video-compatible CMOS sensor. Additionally, by ensuring the cleanest of cleanroom environments during the production process, the sensor minimizes image imperfections and dust.

Because the increased size of the new CMOS sensor allows more light to be gathered, it enables shooting in low-light environments. The sensor makes possible the image capture in one one-hundredth the amount of light required by a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor, facilitating the shooting of 60 frame-per-second video with a mere 0.3 lux of illumination. *3

Potential applications for the new high-sensitivity CMOS sensor include the video recording of stars in the night sky and nocturnal animal behavior.

Through the further development of distinctive CMOS image sensors, Canon will break new ground in the world of new image expression, in the area of still images as well as video.

*1 As of August 27, 2010. Based on a Canon study.

*2 The approximately 21.1 megapixel 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor employed in the company's EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR cameras.

*3 Approximately one-half the brightness of a moonlit night.

It's about 8"x8", so there are plenty of existing lenses that would cover it. I'm curious what the application is, I'm guessing scientific or military.

On the similar subject subject cool video about a guy in SF with a trailer-cam, also shows him developing it (you will lol if you know what a BTZS tube is).

You joke, but I can see people doing this. It's actually a pretty decent camera, but the flash is even more of a joke than point & shoot flashes usually are :(

For $200-300 you get: camera, camcorder, music player, video player, pocket web browser/facebook and whatever else they want, etc.

The only thing that a normal point and shoot has over it is optical zoom, but everybody I know with a p&s zooms to full optical, and then digital anyway, so :colbert:

especially now when the target resolution for most pictures wouldn't exceed whatever limits are on facebook or myspace. You don't even really need more than 5 mpix for that.

I mean right now, I carry a bag with my D90, 35 f/2 and an ipad around with me everywhere. I don't have an iPhone because I've got an awesome legacy Verizon minute plan. I can pick up an iTouch and be OK for taking snapshots at the amusement park, or at a strange party where I don't bring my full kit.

Big loving Edit: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/backstage/comments/yikes-ipod-touchs-rear-camera-capped-at-960x720-stills/ Those jerk bags at Apple didn't put the new fancy back lit sensor into the itouch. Guess I'll still be waiting a bit longer.

In a perfect world, iOS would have an achievement system, where after a certain number of achievements were unlocked, in-camera HDR could be enabled.

Achievement unlocked - "Understanding Exposure" read.
Achievement unlocked - rule of thirds used.

Why the gently caress does everyone add an extra e to the end of lens? I can let a few typos pass without comment but jesus, it's spelled "lense" so often that I'm questioning whether it's actually spelled "lens" at all. Am I actually the idiot who's misspelling it all the time?

Yup, it’s official: the new iPod touch got a rear camera, but it’s not an iPhone 4-quality 5-megapixel shooter, an iPhone 3GS-quality 3-megapixel version, or even an iPhone-quality 2-megapixel version. Instead, it’s just shy of 0.7 megapixels, with 960x720 still resolution, outputting 720p videos at 1280x720. So don’t expect to toss out your point-and-shoot pocket camera—or an iPhone 4—for the iPod touch. This camera’s just for the kiddies.
