I wound up having to put 1x1 plates under both headlight pieces anyway to make the minifig fit in the cockpit, so problem averted re: fit.

Yeah, that's one of the downsides I'm seeing in modern Lego. It seems like a lot of sets use traditional bricks for the under-structure, and then use all sorts of custom, pre-molded shapes for the outer areas.

Obviously not everything is like that, but it's why stuff like the Atlantis line holds zero appeal for me. I was quite happy to find the Green Grocer set I got was pretty much made up of standard brick types.

If he loves sea creatures, there have been plenty of Lego sets for animals, including many sea creatures.

But keep those sets I suggested in mind, as I remember building the Galactic Mediator and Solar Snooper with my dad as a kid on Christmas morning on the porch, with the sun barely peeking over the snow-covered trees because me and my sister couldn't wait any longer to open our presents at 4 AM, while drinking hot cocoa with marshmallows. They are great sets to build with your kid, and they've got some awesome, awesome gimmicks. Like the Galactic Mediator splits into three sections, and the Solar Snooper has that transforming flying ship.

I've gathered up a bunch of links to various animal-based sets for you. This would be a good time to get the Snap Links addon for Firefox.

Ok, this is going to sound really nerdy, but whatever. I think you need to look at Lego holistically, here. Who cares if new sets have fewer traditional elements. They are still widely available (especially in Creator and Cafe Corner sets). New parts open up new possibilities. I used to be very anti-new part as well, but watching what people do with "useless" parts has truly changed my mind. The only parts I don't much like are the ones that mostly originated in the late 90s, that were intended to be shortcuts. They didn't provide any new opportunites for building, but rather were just a single part made from multiple parts.

The above is a classic example; a Rock Raiders vehicle base. The only reason this existed was to keep parts counts low, while still making sets look big. It's nothing more than a scam, really. Even if it were used in some awesome MOC, I can't imagine that basic pieces couldn't have been used to equal effect.

So basically, yes, construction methods of sets have changed. For example, the difference between todays Space Police and the older Space stuff is that there is an increased emphasis on playability. The new sets incorporate more Technic elements and Technic connections to make them less likely to break, but the details are still there, IMO. As far as new parts go, Lego has been giving us many useful new basic elements every year for the part few years. If they want to make a bunch of new Bionicle type stuff, that's fine. Those parts are awesome too, when used correctly.

Seen on flickr today.

Not a personal attack or anything, I just wanted to share my views on the matter. I'm always excited these days when new parts are released, and I'm constantly amazed what people manage to do with them.

It looks like it, yeah. If not, it's definitely extremely close, I'm sure you could lend him a hand to make it big enough.

Also heh, searching for Lego MST3K yields some amusing results, as well as a damned good Megas XLR. That's by far the most creative use I've seen for those horrible loving yellow arches from the Aquanauts base set, on the first Crow's head.

Judging by the instructions, you could stick a minifig in the main body of the sub, but there's no detailing or anything very cockpit-like.

I got this when my mom went to a giant neighborhood garage sale last year, and it's a pretty awesome little sub. The sides open up to get access to the interior, there's a cockpit, storage areas for tanks and helmets, an engine...it's got a little scooter-type vehicle, an ROV and the front of the sub detaches.

In other news, since I'm impatient, I already opened up both the Advent Calenders I bought and assembled everything. I was surprised at some of the extra pieces--most minifigs with hair came with two hair pieces, except the Castle Queen, Maiden, and the little girl in the City one. Most items with a weapon (sword, hammer) came with at least one extra, and I got 6 swords between a Minifig and a Sword in the Stone model in Castle. I got one crossbow and two quivers for one soldier fig.
City had fewer figs, but more overall pieces. Several of them were minifig-scale toys. A crane, bulldozer, firetruck, plane, and helicopter. They're all pretty sweet.
Speedo-wearing santa and the shower are really in there, which is still just inexplicable.

I just picked up a new, sealed Star Wars Republic Attack Cruiser, with all parts, from a thrift store for $10. They had a second one, but I didn't buy it.

I have no idea why, now that I realize it's 1170 pieces, comes with five minifigs that can be sold for $10 a pop and is entirely unopened. I'm considering going back tomorrow and picking up the other one, to sell on eBay or Bricklink for the $60 or so it goes for. Or maybe to have 2340 lego pieces as the start of my new collection in America :ohdear:

I picked up the Gateway of the Squid set thursday, after eying it greedily every time I went through the lego aisle. There are some cool sets out right now IMO, like the castle or the submarine that transforms into a robot, but none of them had the appeal that this one did.
Think about it. You get the fantastic squid-man minifig, which is in, what, three sets total? By far one of my favorite mini-figs. You get a neat medium-sized squid, perfect for eating people, and you get a giant monster squid with giant pointy fangs, IN THE SAME SET. Three whole squids!
The divers are OK, I don't really like the Atlantis diver design much, and the gateway itself is a bit weak, basically being a fairly simple gate mechanism with a trapdoor in the back, but the set looks pretty fantastic when you put the giant squid on the top so it can loom menacingly.
