Another note on the Cirrus family, deployment results in a totaling of the aircraft. That's not to say it can't fly again, as there have been a few instances where the aircraft have been repaired, but the damage to the airframe from the system alone is substantial.

I'm taking this loving roadtrip in two weeks, and thestops along the way are primarily going to be Blackbirds on display.

As I'll be in D.C., I called up the CIA headquarters at Langley and spoke at length about how I am a huge nerd for the Blackbird and Oxcart, how I need to see them all before I die and that's what I'm trying to do, and asked if there was any way to visit their facility and see the A-12 they have on display (the one they ganked from Minnesota). I was politely told no. Stupid CIA always has to ruin all my fun.

But the lady said she would gladly send me a pamphlet on the A-12. I accepted, and less than a week later I got a loving 55-page, full-color BOOK. Seriously. Call them up and get free Oxcart stuff.

The big advantage to ballistic parachute system is that the aircraft comes down almost vertically, and at a controlled rate.

When an aircraft lands under a parachute, the landing gear and seat absorb much of the impact energy, and the human body is does a much better job absorbing an impact up through the spine than having the body whipped forward against a seatbelt.

I got to fly in a Boeing-Stearman today. First time ever in an open cockpit.

The entire was absolutely amazing. There was a little :barf: for a bit, all the pilot got to hear over the radio after asking "you alright?" was "blaragharf.... WOOOOOOOO"

An open cockpit plane is the only time I've ever bee both too hot and too cold at once (the planes exhaust vented right at the forward cockpit). Also breathing in exhaust for 45 minutes is unpleasant.

I noticed that, too. I was completely comfortable for the entire flight, but as soon as we stopped I noticed I was drenched in sweat. Weird, but it makes sense.

Whoa. Thats wild because I used to work there about 8-9 years ago. Some of the owners would buy these things and then never come to pick them up. We had one sit for almost year before the owner could make enough time to get the checkout (he didn't have his tailwheel endorsement iirc) and fly it home. We also sold one to the inventor of the furby, who was a super, super cool guy. Total flying nerd too. He once bought a bunch of classic flying movies at the aviation museum in Kalamazoo and then brought them to work and we all watched them in the pilots lounge. He also set some kind of record for flying his airplane the most in a year, something like 200 hours.

I'm actually really surprised that place is still in business, since the people who ran the place were total fuckups.

B2's are pretty cool. My dad lives a few miles off the end of the runway at Whiteman AFB and the sound they make at full throttle on takeoff is pretty awesome. I've been around a lot of aircraft growing up and it's something that I can't really remember hearing coming from anything else.

It was at Rocky Mountain Regional, formerly known as Jeffco (up where CO-121 and 36 intersect). CAF had their B-24 there along with a B-25 and their C-47.

Got around to uploading a few more olde tyme airplane slides from my friend's grandpa. Some airshow stuff, some briefing slides, some that were probably from work as he was a test engineer at Wright-Patterson for the F-111 program.

Bunch of them are crap, but some of them are unusual.

Looks like a Banshee, but without the wingtip tanks. The angle of the photo disguises the otherwise distinctive wing roots.

e: It's an F2H-3 or -4, which were stretched 8 feet from the -1 and -2 models. You may have in mind the -1 or -2, which will look different, particularly if you're looking at the relationship of the cockpit to the wings.

Will try to, but to be honest it'll probably be some time before I into really reading it. I have leafed through it and it seems quite up to date. I can say though that the Haynes Apollo book isn't quite what I thought it would be but well written nevertheless.
