Here's some I find scary:

-Session 9
-Stir of Echoes
-Cabin Fever

-The Shining

Or make her watch the diner scene in Mulholland Dr. because it is terrifying.

And I have a request. I'm looking for the best crime/prison/gang movies I haven't seen. Mainly prison movies, stuff like A Prophet, or gang movies stuff like 187, Bound by Honor, Eastern Promises more about 'gangs' than 'gangsters', so Scorsese movies don't apply. Also I'm looking for mainly foreign stuff or lesser known gems, I imagine there's some quintessential Russian prison film I've never heard of.

I'm always up for some atmospheric based horror (sometimes called thriller, but with a supernatural bent), but sometimes you get burned bad. I recently saw Last House on the Left (the original) and hated it. I mean, I really just found it to be an assault on the senses. That can sometimes be tolerable if there are other benefits such as a compelling mythology, likable characters, etc. Anyway, I just don't want to go through that again. Still, I find myself going back to Wes Craven looking for something redeemable. After all, I do love Nightmare on Elm Street parts 1 and 3 (some of the others too).

What is your opinion on People Under the Stairs? I've heard some good things. Or should I go with this collection instead which includes Shocker and The Serpent and the Rainbow? I haven't seen any of these. Keep in mind, I'm more interested in atmosphere driven stories rather than anything gore driven.

Yeah, this is just right. Has a nice feel, too.
Recommend me some good Italian Horror.

Lately I've been watching some Argento films, and while I loved Deep Red and Tenebre, I wasn't too fond of Bird With The Crystal Plumage. I've found that my enjoyment of his films is almost directly related to how much Goblin's music is in the film - something about it really makes the movies fun to watch. Suspiria was great and Phenomena was loving crazy, but when I watched Opera it felt like something was missing (even though the music that played during the murder scenes was funny and an ok substitute).

Something else I didn't like about Opera (aside from the fact that the camera seemed to always be moving) was how much more realistic it was. There's a charm to Deep Red and Tenebre that, while they have hosed up psychological aspects, they never get too real - the blood, that beautiful smack of paint, is awesome to look at and keeps things fun. While Opera was neat and all and really felt like a modern horror movie, the things I've seen from his 70's output was just funner to watch.

So with that covered, I know I need to see some Bava - Lamberto and Mario - but which ones? I know I need to see Blood and Black Lace, and maybe Black Sabbath (?) but I'm not sure where to start with those two.

And I've seen some Fulci, most of which I hated, with the exception of Conquest because it was just so ridiculous. I'm not sure I've seen a Fulci film that I liked.

So...recommend me some Italian Horror! It'd be nice if that Giallo Primer thread was still around, maybe we should revive it?

Here's a few to check out:

"Carandiru" (2003) and "Cell 211" (2009). They're both more "prison" and less "gang" movies (obviously some gang poo poo but not the primary focus) but they're both foreign and well done.

I liked "City of God" (2002) for a good Brazilian gang-type movie but you may have seen that one.

Hmmm they all start with "C." Odd.

too kewell for school..
Anyone able to recommend me some 'average' thriller/drama movies with a bit of action and a relatively simple to follow storyline. I'm essentially looking for popcorn flicks, which I can watch on my phone on the bus over 2 or 3 trips. I don't really want anything particularly heavy, and I don't want to explore any great films, or anything requiring a bit more thought because watching a movie on a bus on a 4inch screen isn't the best way to appreciate good cinema.

Some I have watched recently that fit the criteria

- Street Kings
- Miami Vice
- Oceans 11
- Shooter
- War

These are more action orientated, but they don't necessarily have to be. It just seems to work..

Probably the easiest request in this thread, so any suggestions? I know these kind of movies are everywhere and it might be a lazy request, however I find when I go searching for them I am drawn to the same ones over and over, or re-watching movies I have in my collection.

So just looking for a few suggestions..

Going off the few films you listed off I'd say:
-Taken
-16 Blocks
-Running Scared
-The Recruit
-SWAT
-Phonebooth
-Walking Tall
-Dark Blue
-Broken Arrow

I think those fit pretty well. All half way decent popcorn flicks that aren't going to require much thinking.

My personal choice would be Clue (1985), although this is more of a comedy with thriller/drama elements.

For a straight thriller/drama with great dialog, I'd suggest either Laura (1944) or Murder My Sweet (also 1944). Laura also includes a ridiculously young Vincent Price, who plays a young gigolo, if you can believe it.

Denham's does it!
I apologize in advance, I know this is kind of vague.

I'd appreciate suggestions for movies similar to The Thin Red Line, i.e. films as philosophical works. The Tree of Life thread made me start thinking about The Thin Red Line again, and how similar it is to Herman Melville and Cormac McCarthy, in that the content serves as a means to directly address "big" philosophical ideas (these from Heidegger, Kant, and Hegel, I think, for example). Address is probably the wrong word. I love books in that vein because I have a hard time taking concepts from academic texts and imagining what worldviews based on them would be like, and those books do just that: frame the ideas in the context of life, in order to directly engage them. I am looking for films that work with more broad ideas, though, I can find existential character studies easy enough. As it stands, I've been through Malick, Tarkovsky and most of Bergman. Some Herzog seems applicable; I've put Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo on the list. What's next?

I've been really into Mad Men lately, as all sane people are, but recently I re-watched Down with Love which, instead of seeming like an examination of 1960s style, sensibilities, and era like Mad Men, seemed like 1960s style and era porn. Is there anything else that really feels like Down with Love? The extreme tongue-in-cheek and the complete disregard for authenticity (along with the never-ending sexual innuendos) left me wanting even more.

Ferrell does some of his best comedic work as a straight man, rather than as the ridiculous manchild he's played in too many recent films. Most of his best-loved characters on SNL were played relatively straight, including Alex Trebek and James Lipton. Along these lines, he turned in a fine dramatic performance in Stranger Than Fiction, which reminds me a lot of toned-down, dramatic Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine.
