I've been to hundreds of shows and I've seen a band break equipment twice, both times because it broke during their set. Bands don't just go breaking poo poo whilly nilly anymore.

It seems pretty common in the punk/hardcore scenes, I've probably seen it happen like 10 times, I've personally tossed my guitar twice in the last year. That's just one thing though, the last song is usually the fast fan favorite and the band wants to leave on a bang, to have your camera put away is kind of silly unless they're gonna boot you out of the show for it.

So this band wants to buy some high res versions of the pictures I shot of them recently. I've never sold any of my photos before so I have no idea how much to ask for or anything. Uhh, any advice? I'm in Australia so I don't know if the example prices in the OP would be relevant here or not.

If they're signed, talk with their label and see, odds are they've done this before and they have a set price in mind. See what that is, and if it's good enough, take it. If they're an un-signed small time band I usually just look for the cost of shooting the show; so Ticket (even if I didn't pay) + 2-3 beers + Dinner at Taco Bell = Usually about ~$20. Maybe if I liked the band I'd do some kind of "just hook me up with a shirt/CD and we'll call it good" type of deal. Of course I started shooting concerts for the networking and to help my friends in other bands out more than as some scheme to make money. I just ended up liking it and decided to see how far I could push it.

Depends on the band really. I know bands that understand the whole 3 song rule and amp up their performance for the first few songs. Sevendust is by far the best at this. They are camera hams and love it. It's usually the more veteran bands that understand this. And then there are bands like Tool when you get one 10 minute song and it's basically them playing in the dark and then as soon as you leave it's a god drat light show as bright as the sun. If there is any band that sucks more to shoot than Tool I haven't found them. Also if any of you were thinking about trying to shoot them if they tour again, don't even bother trying to get a pass. They will only approve daily newspapers.

If anyone remembers my questions about manual focusing and almost wide open apertures on concerts, I actually went to shoot a concert of a really famous band here in Brazil, bringing only a Nikon D60 and a 55mm f/1.2 lens. Man, had the wierdest show last night. Band was Regurgitator, who are generally an awesome band, and proved as much; they gave all the photographers free reign, no need for the 3 song rule. The only concession is that we weren't allowed to use the photo pit =\ Cue me standing in a spot, running quickly to take the quickest piss I've ever had, and to see my spot taken by some 6ft 5" dude. Thank gently caress for live view.

I don't know if it's a specific problem with my camera or what, so I usually end up shooting blindly in those situations. Granted I'm 6'6 and don't have too much trouble seeing over people.

Just shot Rusko at the Lizard Lounge in Dallas. edit: Final pics. http://tfatf.dphoto.com/#/album/e4461k/photo/3516706/ I had a photo pass from band management (Biz3) and when I got there, the Tour Manager walked me over to the bouncer who then tried to deny me entrance because "he didn't know who I was." While the Tour Manager is like "Give him a photo pass, please, he's on our list." This goes back and forth before someone comes over and is like "all right, give him a pass, but don't expect any favors!" The Tour Manager apologizes and rolls their eyes. Then I get inside, and make my way to the pseudo-VIP area immediately behind the DJ Booth where Rusko is hanging out, and it's like him, his manager and like 3 photographers. We all just stand around shooting the poo poo, and he's making us drinks from his bottle-service thing. It was awesome. There was a bouncer standing there, and as soon as Rusko went on, the bouncer started screaming at us that we weren't supposed to be there and how we're loving poo poo up and we had to move 3 feet over to behind a velvet rope. This was the story of the night. Rusko would wave a photographer over to come take pics right near him, and a screaming bouncer would clamber over people to pull them away. Man, gently caress that place. If it wasn't the only place in Dallas that did big name DJ sets, I'd never ever go. There was one drunk rear end guy who somehow got in with a camera, and just kept getting in bouncers faces and getting escorted outside, but he'd be right back in. He was probably the reason the bouncers went apeshit on us. Ugh. At least the pics came out. Here are a couple unedited:

I just scored a photo pass for Coheed and Cambria when they come through my town next month. I'm pretty excited since it'll be my first real concert venue shoot. I've never actually seen any photographers at this particular theater, either, so that's cool, too. Has anybody here shot them before? Is there anything I should keep an eye out for? It'd be nice if we could get some more consistent updates. Don't be afraid to write album/EP reviews if you don't have any concerts to write about, also don't be afraid to recommend some friends for a spot on the roster if they shoot shows, bigger markets (like almost all of us are from) can easily support 2 or 3 photogs. Also, I'm gonna start looking for people who claim writing/journalism as their main skill to do some reviews and interviews. On a less related note I got some promo pics in yesterday that went pretty well. At one point a car drove by and someone yelled something, so of course the band has to shout loudly at the car. The car goes around the block and comes to a stop and the guy is like "Oh you're that guy that shoots for Loftis right? Awesome dude!" (Loftis is my friend who runs 1320video.com, a fairly well recognized national drag and street racing blog). Needless to say I about poo poo my pants when they stopped. Lastly, I'm looking to put together a "Contact List" for shooting bigger bands. The trouble is any keywords around that are search engine land-mines that yield fairly terrible results. So if anyone can give me a list of PR firms that represent musicians that'd be awesome, I just need the names not who they represent, I can do my own leg work. I shot my first ever rap concert a couple of days ago and I'm shooting Big D and the Kids Table in a couple weeks. I shot Sammy Adams, some up and coming white boy rapper. I saw James yesterday. I tried looking for a camera policy, contacting people at the venue, but I couldn't find anything and no one got back to me. I wandered in with just my ticket being scanned. Three songs in however security accosted me and specifically asked if my rinky-dink set-up (Olympus PEN & 70s OM glass) had "removable lenses." For some reason I said "no," but they took out a flashlight and examined it, and made me put it away. (Grateful they didn't confiscate or boot me out at least.)     They were really efficient about it. When I got in I thought it was no big deal. There were tonnes of people with much larger cameras, and like foot-long lenses going on. Only compacts and cellphones were out after I got busted.

Woohoo! Andy Sherriff of Chapterhouse specifically gave me permission to take pictures tonight. I can't loving wait. I'm even excited for the openers. Ulrich Schnauss is loving incredible  The local act, Fjord Rowboat, is by no means bad either. They remind me a lot of The Catherine Wheel, though more on the shoegazer side.

Fjord Rowboat standard frontman shot  every band playing at this venue has an image like this  shared for comedy's sake Ulrich Schnauss  Kind of hard to take an interesting shot of a guy just standing at the edge of the stage with his back to most of the audience. I loved him anyway, but he did not go over well with much of the crowd. Chapterhouse    I somehow got away with the horrible red lighting without needing to change everything to black & white.
