I guarantee they're using a slide. Ebow, maybe, or just a pick with volume pedal and/or compressor. But yes, electric slide guitar with copious amounts of delay and reverb.

You'll have to use the bridge pickup when you're using your slide way the hell past the fretboard.

Any synth with the right distortion can do this, and seeing that a variation of this sound returns later and sounds very sequenced, my guess is that it's a synth.

On most sample-based synthesizers the actual samples used for distorted guitar are pretty lame; the (very digital, clipping) distortion just has been cranked up to the max. Generally the basis consists of a muted guitar sample for the initial attack and then the basis can be anything; to add extra realism, add a layer consisting of a regular sinewave that slowly fades in (transposed an octave up) to simulate feedback.

Ok, here's my query:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBhYQJRwK2M&feature=related

How would you simulate this vintage sound?

I have gotten similar effects by:
1. Bouncing the master track to a secondary, putting Dblue Glitch, Compression and Distortion so the levels are way past normal.
2. Using this now crushed track as a carrier signal for a compressor.
3. Re-applying the new compressor to the original track.
4. Using the Frippertron VST or a lesle speaker VST to make it pulse, or a slow tremelo.
5. Vibrato with the depth turned way up and the rate turned way down, so it just shows a very slow, but repetative pitch distortion (like you would hear on a warped record)

This is too complicated for something that I think is probably wrapped neatly into a VST somewhere. I have a want for a vintager or distresser, but other than being creative with similar VST's like the TAL bitcrusher, I am out of ideas.

Yes, I am one of those fags who wants their music meticulously placed to sound like it wasn't.

I am working on a project which uses the Korg DS10, which is a vintage-ish synth simulator for the Nintendo DS.

The controls on it are commonly found in moth synth rigs. There just so happens to be a tutorial on how to change settings to get this same effect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFlsBs5ZLRE

Thank you. Seems close enough. :)

I can't tell you how to achieve that exact vintage effect, but you might be able to do something with Vinyl, which is a free VST that distorts to make things sound like they're being played on a vinyl record. You can also configure the amount of wear, warping, dust, scratches, etc.

Hey guys, how could I try to geat this sound? It's from Le Castle Vania's Black eyes remix (originally by Snowden):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ33OYUXpqQ&feature=related

I mean that distorted sound that starts at 0:15. When I first listened to the song I thought "Oh well, it's a remix by an indie band, it's probably just a bit of the guitar track sampled or something. Turns out I was wrong because I remember listening to the original song and I don't think any sound like that one pops up there.

So, is that a synth but going through which effects? I guess it's distorted but I use CamelCrusher distortion and it sounds too digital and "robotic" to my taste, that sound in the song sounds more like the distortion you hear on guitars... could it be an amp emulator plugin? Has anyone tried them? I've seen them used on youtube videos on some synths, but never tried one. What do people usually use them for?
Also is that pitch bending?

Another dumb guitar question.

In the Sonic Youth song Total Trash (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHhtgZJVMxM), somewhere in the middle of the song (at work so I can't denote a time specifically) the main riff begins to slowly transition in timbre (I think?), getting progressively more and more 'shrieking.' Use Linn or E-mu Drumulator samples (the kick sounds familiar to that) - but play them back at a lower key, slowing them down (especially noticeable with the snare).

This alone probably won't do the trick - see http://www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/423641-glo-fi-production-technique.html for more.

the tom sounds, at least, sound like samples of a Simmons SDS-V/Pollard Syndrum/Synare or any of the other various electronic drum kits of the late 70's/early 80's. That particular sound is pretty easy to reproduce, since it's just an unfiltered sine wave that gets pitched down by an envelope, so if you have a synth you can probably recreate it even without access to the original samples.

The kick drum and rest of it could be from anything. Most likely they're all samples, possibly from multiple instruments or sources.

Though if you're going after "meaty" and "80's" drum sounds, the two most famous drum machines of all time were made in the 80's: the Roland TR-808 and TR909. Those two machines are the staple sounds of like 90% of electonic music.

It's hard to know what you mean exactly, but if you mean the kind of harsh detuning sound it could be something like a chorus pedal with a high rate being messed with. I think you can get similar effects with flangers and phasers with the rate ramped up. It's a little hard to tell how much of it is the guitar out of tune with itself and how much is the contrast with the other instruments

Yeah actually now that I listen to the track again (whoop that youtube was bad, sorry) around 2:40 the guitar quickly slides into that detuned sound, with another harsher one being added later. I guess I'll have to buckle down and get me that chorus pedal, but even so (and maybe it's just my ears) it kinda seems like the effect is progressive rather than immediate (as in a pedal being stomped on).

I'm not listening to the youtube link (banned in my country!) but I'm on grooveshark and around 3:13 the lower part of the tone seems to drop out, I don't know if that's because the wet/dry balance was shifted way over to the effected sound or if he changed what he was playing, but yeah it does sound like a knob's being tweaked gradually, it's not an on-off thing.

It also sounds harsher because the other guitar starts going into noise and feedback too, so that adds to the effect somewhat ;)

I think the 909 sounds more 90's (or at least late 80's) than pure 80's, personally (I associate it with The KLF for example, and primitive house acts).

I like using the TR-707 for the 80's synthpop vibe, the 808 gets you more the electro sound (a la Cybotron and Jonzun Crew, not Le Castle Vania). I think that The Outrunners use a 707 or 707 samples, if you want to know how it sounds like (I've only listened to a song by M83 and can't remember how his drums sounded, also I'm at work and can't youtube it).

That's the freedom of remixing; you don't have to use any elements of the original at all :v:.

Making percussion dirty/gritty and treatment for monophonic synthesizers (ProCo Rat works great on a TB303.

It's probably portamento. It's easier - pitch bending is generally limited to +12 or -12 notes maximum, and using portamento and setting it to monophonic gives you far more control over the pitch.

I think they've simply sampled a power chord with lots of sustain and use the sampler's portamento to achieve the effect. Ableton's Simpler does this in a snap, Reason's NN-19 too; so would http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php (sorry if you have a Mac, don't know anything that would do the job).
