Nope, France is the only place it's been released as far as I know. It's the movie that finally pushed me over the edge to go region free, and boy do I not regret it for a second.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand Season 1 is $35 at Wal-Mart and Fry's. If you haven't ordered it from Amazon yet and don't feel like waiting for them to ship you a copy (and really, you shouldn't wait), run out and grab it. Great release.

Just saw this post over at HDD:

quote:

By way of a little advance research, would any of the classics collectors here be interested in BluRays of the Cassavetes library? You know - Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Shadows, Woman Under the Influence etc.
These would most likely be available singly and in a boxed set.
They would be a European release and likely region-free.
Just testing the market.
Classics are so expensive to release with a risky upside for distributors.

Did you pick up Spartacus yet? If so what color is the stripe at the top of the slipcover? I got my copy from Best Buy and it's yellow instead of blu with a gold bluray logo that you can almost barely see. I'm just curious cause all of the pictures and reviews I saw online displayed a different box color scheme.

Interesting that neither Gary's comments nor the review he quotes address the amount of humor in the film. The tone is rather similar to Seventh Seal in its combination of drama and comedy.

Also, I've never a seen a "good" version of The Magician, but those screens look awfully gray to me.

Honestly, even with Alien and BTTF coming out this year, this is easily my most anticipated catalog release. I love the poo poo out of Moulin Rouge ( :colbert: ) and the film was just made to be seen on this format (and hopefully with uncompressed audio).

Picked up Bored to Death season one today; looks great, a little light on features though and with packaging clearly designed by someone who has not actually seen the show.

Ok, guess they must have changed it before shipping it out. Another quick question about it though, does anyone know if Best Buy price matches with Wal-mart. It's only 10$ difference so I'm not to worried about it but it would be nice to get 10 back.

Looks like it's a 1-disc Blu-Ray. Knowing Warner, it wouldn't surprise me if its 4 hours of movie fit into an old 30GB HD-DVD encode.

Have you never seen the Criterion Blu-ray releases? They had a custom clear case made by Scanovo - it's Blu-ray height, but thicker than normal, and the whole cover is usable like a DVD case (no plastic Blu-ray top portion).

Eh, I wish they weren't so thick. One of the things I love about Blu-Ray is the reduced shelf space. I know it's only a few millimeters, but it adds up.

One of the (I admit, petty) disappointments I have about blu-ray is that most cases feel so much cheaper and flimsier than dvd cases, and the blue color somewhat bothers me. Those criterion cases look perfect.

True, true...

Egbert Souse

Criterion probably uses their Blu-height cases because of booklets. They have to be fairly small to fit in the thin cases (see MoC's Sunrise).

I have 8 BluRays on pre-order, which is probably the most I've ever: Modern Times, Paths of Glory, The World at War, Fantasia, Sherlock Jr/Three Ages, Psycho, MoC's Metropolis steelbook, and Toy Story 3 (4-disc). WoW was mainly to lock in the sale price. I'm probably going to cancel Fantasia at the last minute if the re-editing is poorly done, though.

I'm at 14:

The Bridge on the River Kwai
Twilight Zone Season 2
The Night of the Hunter
Metropolis
Fantasia/Fantasia 2000
Alien Anthology
House
Paths of Glory
The Darjeeling Limited
The Magician
The Thin Red Line
The Maltese Falcon
The Exorcist
Psycho

I'm guessing thodt is somewhere around 130 (or maybe he doesn't pre-order, the magic Blu-Ray fairy just drops them down his chimney).

Twilight Zone has to wait until I can sell my DVD box and there's a box set of all five seasons. The Night of the Hunter, and Darjeeling are mine in the next B&N sale. Might add The Magician, House, and The Thin Red Line, but I'm going to Netflix them first.

Lion King is next year. In fact, there's a trailer for it on Beauty and the Beast!

Next year's already stacked for Disney: Lion King, Bambi, Dumbo, and Alice in Wonderland. That's already twice as many as 2010 (Beauty and the Beast is the first animated classic they're releasing this year, and Fantasia is the only other one).

I preorder all of my blu-rays so I can do a proper budget for them ahead of time and make sure I don't go overboard and so I can lock in any low prices Amazon might offer between now and the release date. Right now I've got 9:

The Exorcist
Twilight Zone: Season 2
Back to the Future
Psycho
White Christmas
Black Christmas (ha)
Moulin Rouge
Toy Story 3
Christmas Classics Gift Set

Also, for the first time in almost two years, I have a DVD preordered (The Larry Sanders Show: Complete Series).
