Up until recently there were about a billion .cfg files that you had to sift through to mess with these options, but they've implemented really nice .cfg file browser which is totally awesome. Seriously the mod community for JA2 is one of the best, hands down. I put them in the upper echelon of mod communities along with probably only the the people behind OTTD. Anyway, you'll probably find a good mix of options on your own and most can be changed without wrecking saves. Before you do anything, though, turn off the Drassen counter-attack which will probably gently caress you with a broomstick if you're having trouble with vanilla. You can turn it on later when you found you've mastered it. You should also be thinking more about how you play the game. It's a tactical game, so think about tactics. Move slowly and quietly. Utilize cover. Stay low. Leave your dudes looking in the right directions with some AP left over so they can get a possible interrupt. Use explosives tactically. Many times, especially early game, you are going to be outgunned. The overarching rule of playing is find your advantages and utilize them. Bumrushing a guard shack against vastly greater numbers and firepower is suicide. Divide and conquer and try not to wake the sleeping giant.

JA2 without 1.13 doesn't have suppression activated, does it? Just install 1.13, it's the result of years of dedicated fanwork and everybody uses it.

I played JA2 for the first time not too long ago, with 1.13, with only Drassen Counterattack turned off, everything else was default, and it was hard, but not too hard. I try to avoid fanwank as much as possible, so I turned off tons o' guns which apparently just gets ridiculous, so I'd say play on the easier mode with tons o' guns if the defaults are too tough. And suppression is off by default, I believe.

Yes, suppression is off by default in 1.13. However I would avoid turning it on at first until you have the basics down. Yes, you can suppress but you can also be suppressed. It adds another tactical layer which is cool, but it's another thing to think about. I like playing tons of guns. Most of the guns that drop are pretty useless anyway, so in a way it dilutes the tables and makes it harder to find something really sweet. It's also fun to find those really loony guns that are usual of no use to your party, but they're fun to look at.

The only game like this I've played before is Fallout Tactics. I did alright at first in JA2, got as far as taking the airfield so I could get equipment and stuff dropped in, found I had better luck fighting at night. Unfortunately after that I was running into enemy patrols on the map any time I tried to go to the next towns, and I just couldn't find a way to win in the wide, flat spaces I found myself in. I think I'll re-install and give it a try with 1.13, what better way to learn than to jump in at the deep end?

Yes, it can be hard to fight when it seems there is no cover. However, there is such a thing as portable cover. It's called a smoke grenade. EDIT: I like keeping a guy with a grenade launcher of some sort with smoke on tap on hand at all times. My thinking is I can sort of freeze the enemy with smoke and/or tear gas then I have bought some time to lay in something more serious. If you just use 1.13 without doing anything else, it becomes harder (most notably the Drassen counterattack, but you also have to deal with more guns with more types of ammo making it harder for your squad to share). However, there are many things you can do with the editor, ranging from making it easier (turn off the counterattack, train more militia, sell items without a shop, have enemies drop everything they carry, etc.) to downright cheating (start with 6 IMP characters with 100's in all stats and level 10, create a gun that takes 1 AP to fire, has a range of 10 miles and base damage of 200, etc.)

As a general rule you probably want to avoid fighting in outdoor areas because of that sort of thing. If you've got some night ops mercs (Igor is a good early night ops character), you can do pretty well in those areas by fighting at night. Just go prone and let the enemies come to you - night ops grants +1 sight range at night so you'll see them before they see you, and you'll probably score a ton of interrupts too.

sexual rickshaw posted:Is the Ishar Compilation worth getting? I've been looking at it, but after seeing videos of it, it looks rather hard. Not really. If you absolutely MUST have a Dungeon Master style game then I suppose there aren't many other options on GoG, but overall they're pretty simple and bland. They do have nice graphics though, and the party personality system in (I believe) 2 is pretty spiffy, but overall you'd be much better served by the Realms of Arkania games or the Might and Magic collection.

It does a few innovative things but for the most part it's not that good of a game. The biggest setback for me was that it costs precious gold to save your game, amongst other little nuances. You would be better with sticking with the Might and Magic collection. If you get the Might and Magic collection don't feel bad to use pdf maps for M&M 1 and 2, since mapping out your progress on grid paper is awful.

The Longest Journey is simultaneously the best and worst adventure game. On one hand it has some of the more ridiculous puzzles that heralded the end of adventure games as a popular genre. On the other hand it is ridiculously fun and has a good story by video game standards. Dreamfall is of the new adventure game mold. Its not bad but it literally doesn't have an ending and the sequel is reaching Duke Nukem Forever levels of development hell.

It's way too long for an adventure game. I kind of liked it, but I only got to about the 4th out of 13 chapters before giving up because I wasn't willing to devote so much of my life to a single adventure game. A lot of people would consider that length a selling point though, I imagine.

I wouldn't say that.. the Dreamfall developers have been pretty open that they're not working on the sequel right now and they're all focused on "The Secret World" MMO at the moment. Not at all like Duke Nukem Forever where it was in "active development" for over a decade.

Anyone buying The Longest journey, the drat thing starts up at 640x640 fullscreen and the only way you can change it to windowed is by finding a hidden .ini. It's preferences.ini and it's hidden in - C:\Users\User-Name\AppData\Roaming\The Longest Journey - Windows 7 C:\Documents and Settings\User-Name\Application Data\The Longest Journey\ - Windows Vista/XP The one in Program Files/The Longest Journey is obsolete and doesn't do anything. To change from fullscreen to windowed mode find the new Preferences.ini and replace it with this. (This is the one found in programfiles/tlj, just with the fullscreen switch set to 0) preferences.ini posted:; Preference file for The Longest Journey The cutscenes are still a bit bugged, but I don't think anything can be done about that. The fact it's tiny doesn't appear to be changeable either.
