I'm looking for music like The Ladies Of Sport, particularly the songs "Schoolbus" and "The Product" I've no real idea what genre it is though as iTunes calls it "alternative" which is incredibly broad brush strokes. It might be electronica mixed with chiptune.

Can anyone help? This is a YT vid for one of their songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwAlUBmcRNw

Here's a wide range of minimalist stuff I highly suggest. Not all of it is sleepy Boards of Canada, electronic type stuff...

Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music for Airports
Arvo Pärt - Für Alina
Tony Conrad with Faust - Outside the Dream Syndicate
Philip Glass - Solo Piano
Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
Boris - Flood
Glenn Branca - The World Upside Down
La Monte Young - A Well Tuned Piano

... but if that's the kind of stuff you want just invest some time into Brian Eno. There are actually 4 albums that are part of the Ambient series, three of them he plays on, the other one he only produced.
Started getting into these, thanks for the list!

This website is great, very handy.

Freescha is really good, there is obviously Brian Eno, Circular (a bit experimental, though), Aphex Twin's SAW albums too, and maybe early Luke Vibert/ Wagon Christ. (I guess this may be obvious but I don't know how into this stuff you are)
I haven't listened to Aphex Twin in ages, Freescha is really good.

Anyone know any good head-bobbing, danceable tracks? I'm imagining a blend of say, The Pharcyde, MIA, Bassnectar, Goapele, and Ratatat. That sounds overly complicated..

I've recently been loving on this, if that helps steer any recommendations.

It doesn't necessarily have to be super feelgood or anything, just in the pocket and not acoustic.

Have you heard Chromeo? First thing I thought of when I heard "head bobbing, danceable tracks"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd57i0TWoW0 - Needy Girl (The sound quality of this doesn't do the song justice when you have it cranked on a nice stereo)

Mm, I think I should have been clearer; I'm looking for stuff with a little more soul/hip hop to them. Though Chromeo reminds me of Cut/Copy, and I love them also, so thanks!

My friends Men as Trees! My band used to play with these guys all the time. They were big fans of almost all the bands you mentioned.

You can download their entire discography on their MySpace. I would suggest getting Weltschmertz, the drummer in my band played violin on that album, it kicks a lot of rear end.

They are on hiatus right now, as most of them aren't living anywhere near each other at the moment.

In addition to what's already been mentioned, try the following albums:

Split Lip/Chamberlain - Fate's Got A Driver
Texas Is The Reason - Do You Know Who You Are? / Texas Is The Reason EP
Braid - The Age Of Octeen / Frame & Canvas
Mineral - The Power Of Failing
The Get Up Kids - Four Minute Mile / Red Letter Day EP

So I'm looking for a very specific type of music. Not really sure what it's called, but if anyone's familiar with the first 20 or so seconds of the song "Suddenly Everything Has Changed" by the Flaming Lips, I wouldn't really mind getting whole songs/albums that sound like that.

Not really sure if it qualifies as 'ambient' because most of the ambient music I've heard has like birds chirping in a jungle or something like that.

If anyone can help, thank you so much.

I'm asking for some recommendations, since I feel like I'm in somewhat of a rut lately finding new music.

Some background: I'm really into Amon Tobin and love pretty much everything he puts out. I've been listening to some stuff off of the new Ninja Tune XX Volumes that just came out and I've found it really interesting and its gotten me out of the rut I've been in somewhat.

Specifically, there's this one song that I'd like to find more like. It's the Drop the Other Daedalus Remix (you can find it here on the player, it's the second track.

In addition any other recommendations are welcome, preferably along the same lines.
Thanks!

I'm looking for existential music. I believe that this is not descriptive in any way. Bear with me

Muse - micro cuts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdOHxh9-1Yo
Lightning bolt - 2 towers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTPLcst4OL8

Lyrics don't matter; the relative popularity of the band doesn't matter.
Dire, impenetrable, aggressive, incomprehensible, avant-garde, at times violent.
The sonic equivalent of Salvador Dali.

I'm excited by unforeseen possibilities and I hope someone else will benefit from this too.

here are some noisy and abrasive ideas

If you like that Lightning Bolt song you should definitely check out Boredoms, they're one of the best noise rock bands imo. Super Ae is probably the most similar album to the 2 Towers song but they have other great releases too. Here's a bit that's somewhat similar to 2 Towers:

also I don't know if you like hip hop at all but Dalek do some really cool noisy shoegaze stuff, if you're into rap at all have a listen:

(turn up the volume they are both best heard loud as gently caress)

I am looking for a single album recommendation that means an enormous amount to you and fits these criteria:

Roughly rock/soul/funk/fusion genres
Roughly from the 1960s-1980s
"Virtuoso" performer/lyricist/composer (whatever that means to you)
Relatively upbeat tempo on average
Introspective/psychedelic/thought-provoking/emotionally driven lyrics or melodies
Possibly danceable somewhere in the album
Complete statement within the album as a whole (i.e. total album work brings something more than any one of the individual songs)

Thanks.

This is kind of a weird request as I'm not sure what I'm looking for so much as what I'm not looking for, and I guess ultimately I'm hoping to fill a gap in my collection with something strange and unexpected.

I'm looking for interesting music from the 1940s-50s that isn't jazz, blues, or rock & roll. And as far as avant-garde music goes, I'm already familiar with Varese, Sun Ra, and Moondog.

one more I'd add is Akron/Family, their self titled album and the split EP they did with Angels of Light are both fantastic and are quite folky albeit with a psychedelic tinge sometimes.
