Universal is about to go hog-wild with catalog releases - tons of new pre-order pages now up on Amazon. No dates for any of these yet, but there should be soon: A Beautiful Mind American Graffiti Billy Madison The Blues Brothers Dazed and Confused Fast Times at Ridgemont High Happy Gilmore National Lampoon's Animal House Out of Sight Ray To Kill A Mockingbird

Nice to see retailers begin to push Blu-Ray ahead What I find really interesting is they are looking to put tablet PCs and netbooks into the former space. I'm taking that as a sign that Best Buy understands that streaming and digital distribution are as much a future as Blu-Ray is (probably more-so, I would say).

The Metropolis shirt showed up today. Bummer about BTTF, the only plus over the hdtv cap is no loss of grain from blocking.

Apologies if this has been asked recently, but are there any region-free players around 100 bucks? I'm looking for a cheap model to toss in my bedroom to supplement the PS3 in the living room. The Oppo 80 and 83 aren't really available, and were a bit too expensive for me anyway.

It was released on HD-DVD allllllllllllll the way back in 2006: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/121/nationallampoonsanimalhouse.html That 3.5 stars may be 3 by today's standards, but then again you're not buying Animal House (or any comedy for that matter) for reference quality PQ/AQ.

It looks fine to me. The DVNR on BTTF 3 is obvious on the faster moving parts of the image, but I don't see anything glaringly wrong on Apocalypse Now. I'm not familiar with the film to have much of an opinion, though.

I think they made it brighter than the DVD transfer but didn't Francis Ford Coppola approve the transfer? - edit And if they are complaining about DNR, it doesn't look any worse than Alien did and people were rushing to suck Cameron off for what he did to that transfer. - edit 2 quote:Bill Hunt (The Digital Bits): We might as well start off right away by talking about the issue that – I don't know if controversial is the right word, but it's certainly the most talked about issue related to the home video releases of Apocalypse Now, which is the aspect ratio. All of the previous DVD versions have presented the film in the 2.00:1 aspect ratio preferred by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. On the other hand, the film was originally shot and presented theatrically in the 2.35:1 ratio. So how was the decision made to go 2.35 at long last for this Blu-ray release? I'm so glad that the Lionsgate guy stepped in and helped get us 2:35:1. At least somebody in the industry gets why 2:1 is retarded (when retroactively applied) Call Me Charlie fucked around with this message at 06:55 on Oct 9, 2010 |

Having watched BttF shown digitally last night I really don't know what people are complaining about. There's a nice amount of grain there, and it doesn't look like it's been overly worked. Lea Thompson never looked better (I'm serious about that too, it's nothing really to do with the print but I was suddenly struck by how attractive she was - and how good her performance is)
