As I stated earlier, I have Anthem now and my wife has Golden Rule. With both of us if we need to go to the doctor, we go. She was able to see a Gastroenterologist without so much as thinking about seeing a general practitioner first. With Kaiser she would have had to jump thru several hoops. That would be a very basic explanation of PPO vs HMO.

Clarification:

How does a PPO plan work?

With a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plan, you'll be encouraged to use the insurance company's network of preferred doctors and hospitals. These healthcare providers have been contracted to provide services to you at a discounted rate. You will not be required to choose a primary care physician (like you would with an HMO plan) but you should be proactive in only seeing providers within the network to avoid extra out of pocket expense.

You will probably have an annual deductible to pay before the insurance company starts covering your medical bills. You may also have a co-payment for certain services or be required to cover a certain percentage of the total charges for your medical bills.

With a PPO plan, services rendered by an out-of-network provider will ultimately cost you extra out of pocket expenses. We cannot stress enough the importance of staying within the network to minimize your medical premium dollars spent.

How does an HMO plan work?

An HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plan provides rich benefits. They offer lower out-of-pocket healthcare expenses. They offer less flexibility in the choice of providers than other health insurance plans. You will be required to choose a primary care physician (PCP) when you apply for an HMO plan. You will be required to visit your PCP if and when you need medical attention. If you need to see a specialist, you will need to be referred by your PCP. You may have no coverage provided for services rendered by non-network providers or for services rendered without a proper referral from your PCP.

Does everyone's nose crack? Pushing it side to side, it makes very audible cracks every time. I can feel something shifting, and sometimes my nose stays off-center until pushed back into place. I can crack just above the tip and under the nose between the nostrils. I tried Google, and some sites said this is normal, whereas others said it was not.

What piqued my curiosity is a friend was recently, well, assaulted, and she now has a lump that cracks when she touches it. It never cracked before. My nose has done this as long as I remember, and when I was 6 I was pulled down a flight of stairs headfirst by a dog and face-planted into a cement paving stone. I'm genuinely curious now.

Maybe. There's no telling, everybody's different. She may be put off, or she may be intrigued by your pursuing other options, or she may be a Romanian spy. That's why "do girls do this do girls do that" questions are a little silly; the answer is always "maybe, depends on the person".

My own question: I was watching through Curb Your Enthusiasm, and came across the part where one character ends up giving another character a kidney. This got me curious as to how insurance handles a situation like that. Obviously the kidney recipient will have his surgery covered by his insurance, but would the donor have his kidney extraction covered by his insurance or maybe the donor's? It seems like the donor's insurance would view the surgery as elective and non-necessary, and it would be a real stretch for the recipient's insurance to cover the donor.

Banking question.

A person is depositing a check from me on Saturday. Columbus Day, a banking day, is also coming on Monday. Since the check was deposited on Saturday, will Columbus Day affect the processing time? Should I add an extra day to the normal timeframe, or will the computers do their thing and treat Monday as any other day?

Thanks for the responses guys.

Now I have a related question. Do I need to have the full amount in my account at the moment the check is deposited on Saturday, or would it be ok if I put the necessary amount in cash on Tuesday or Wednesday? I'm in a jam and don't know how check processing works and desperately don't want this check to bounce.

It would probably be best to just spell out your scenario instead of piecing it together.

Anyway, if the person you wrote the check to just deposited the check into their account on Saturday even if it is at your same bank you should be fine if you deposit funds to cover before close of business Tuesday.

What new image interface do you mean? Like how all pictures in an album are displayed as thumbnails on one page, instead of being separated into multiple pages with like 20 pics per page? I have that too, but I still see the "Make profile picture" option when I click an individual pic.

As someone who floated hundreds of checks in his early 20s, I've developed a bit of a niche for this scenario.

If the bank is closed on Monday (it is on Columbus day), they will not process the check until Tuesday. Due to the new banking laws, as long as you have deposited cash on that day, the check will not bounce, as they have to credit cash deposits and transfers immediately, rather than tack them on after the withdrawals. Do it Tuesday though, don't wait until Wednesday.

To be honest, as long as the guy depositing the check doesn't have the same bank as you, you might even have a few extra days to come up with the funds until the check gets processed through your bank. But I would error on the side of caution and get it in there ASAP.

Who's your bank? B of A lets you deposit cash into their ATMs, and as long as it's in by 8pm, it gets credited that same day.

Charles Schwab, which has no banking branches within hundreds of miles of NYC. It's going to take a combination of wiring money from Wachovia as well. I think I can do that tomorrow. My only worry is the check being deposited on Saturday. And given all of these responses, I should be fine.

There's lots of software on the internet to set up tournament brackets by just entering the data. Some of it free. Probably some that can be done in the browser without downloading anything.

Yeah, what's the tournament for? because 19 or 20 people, you're going to have like 10 teams that have a 1st round bye, so if you can't rank them you're kind of in trouble.

If the depositor is at another bank you are in much better shape.

This is not a guarantee but this is how it works (if they deposited it on Saturday)

Tuesday night- All weekend+holiday+Tuesday deposits are processed at depositor bank.
Tuesday/wed- Check is digitally transmitted to your bank for clearing.
Wed night- Check is debited from your account.

That is about as fast as it can possibly happen when dealing with two different banks.

Do a standard bracket, but either have the "best" participant get a bye, or the two "worst" participants play for spot #18. Or if you have 20 participants like you indicated you may, just do a standard bracket. Draw names out of a hat to match up.
