So, prior to the prequels (or at least AoTC) what did you all believe The Clone Wars were?
The clone wars were WW1 in space, too horrific to show onscreen. The Republic was fighting against a huge army of clones that had been made by some organisation, possibly the Emperor in disguise or a third party (it couldn't just be evil jedi because the story would need to be different to the original trilogy). The jedi were champions rather than generals and losses of regular infantry were heavy. Eventually the Republic won but was severely weakened. The Empire is formed kind of like the separatists were, on the outer rim by dissatisfied ex-soldiers much like the private armies and the fascists of the 20th century were. The Empire grows and takes over like fascism/nazism did. Star Wars was an alternate history where the Axis actually won WW2 and imposed decades of darkness upon the world. Ten year old me had already read too much history when he should have been out socialising and playing sport.

I didn't imagine any backstory for Boba Fett let alone the droids, though I thought Chewbacca might have had a role somewhere. I didn't imagine moron war droids at any point. I didn't picture clones being maori dudes. I didn't think the clones would turn into stormtroopers. That totally ruins the moment in ANH where you realise the stormies are just dumb recruits in armour - "What do you think's going on?" "Probably just another drill?" "So, have you seen the new <random technical thing>?".

I didn't imagine that the Republic cleanly turned into the Empire, but I sort of like that to be honest. From what I looked at on various wikis, one of the admirals in the Clone Wars cartoon later becomes head of the Imperial secret police and has a seat at the Death Star round table in ANH. I thought that and the shot of Tarkin at the end of ROTS were pretty neat. I was expecting a trilogy about the gradual corruption of good people due to the pervasive evil of the dark side.

Yeah, that's really bad even by TFU standards. The game already looks like some ADHD appeasing clusterfuck from the gameplay videos with millions of enemies on the screen at once at all times in the first area. The story just makes it even worse and I'm sure the new president probably poo poo canned it so they could still make Star Wars games.

EDIT: On the Clone Wars,

I never really knew what to think because even at a young age I knew what a clone was and what it entailed. Reading the Thrawn trilogy pretty much cemented the conflict as a war using cloned soldiers and that cloning was a banned technology because of that war. Clones were also unstable in the books so I assumed only the "evil" faction used them and also because Palpatine used it. I never really thought more about it because it just seemed somewhat unimportant.

Well, apparently he stays in the background because he doesn't want the Rebel Alliance to depend on him. I guess he helps out behind the scenes and nobody thinks to mention the hyper-Jedi that's going around blowing up planets or whatever Starkiller is doing this week.

I figured it was a war between huge masses of clones occuring between dozens of splinter factions of the republic. Basically, mass cloning became cheap enough that created an infantry army was pathetically cheap and systems no longer needed to look to the republic for protection. A massive decades long civil war ensues during which time untold destruction is unleashed upon the galaxy.

I figured it'd be something like this, too. Not a war between two distinct sides (although, perhaps, it could have started out that way - maybe with two groups sending cloned soldiers against each other, "which is OK, because no real people die, right?"), but rather a many-sided mess where every faction with a grudge against another faction decides to take their shots while they can. Think of a thousand years of peace, disintegrating in a domino effect. A lot of the factions would be using cloning, but some of them wouldn't have the equipment necessary, and as the war drags on, the clones can't be produced in enough numbers, so everyone ends up sending non-clones to die as well. The Jedi should have followed their own loyalties - most would have stayed with the Order, which would probably have sided with the remaining government of the Republic, but some should have returned to their home planets and joined their cause.

It should have been a conflict that left deep scars on the known galaxy, much like World War I did in Europe. The Clone Wars should have left the populace of the galaxy so desperate for peace and order that they would accept any leadership, even that of the Empire, provided that they could provide safety.

To let my imagination run wild for a moment: Palpatine should have been Julius Caesar, elected dictator-for-life by the cheering mob. Or, even better, he should have been Octavian. Someone else, no doubt dancing on Palpatine's strings, should have been the great hero, the statesman who drew together the shreds of the Republic and created from them the Empire - and then, at his moment of triumph, he should have been assassinated, either by the Jedi or by someone posing as a Jedi. Palpatine would have been behind it, of course. Then Palpatine, taking advantage of the public outrage, wipes out the Jedi and establishes himself as Emperor.

Hello Bob
I don't remember the OT ever making any connection between the Clone Wars and the fall of the Old Republic/rise of the Empire, so I always assumed they weren't connected. Obi Wan seemed genuinely nostalgic when he talked about serving with Luke's father. That, and the generally upbeat tone of the original trilogy, made me think of the Clone Wars as a short, victorious war that an old soldier would look back on fondly.

The best parallel I could think of is the way that many of the generals during the American Civil War had served with each other during the earlier Mexican War and had formed close bonds. I assumed that the enemy had used illegal cloning to fill their ranks, hence the name. But even that fact wouldn't give it some dark, horrifying "war is hell" tone. Obi Wan and Anakin were soldiers, right? It'd just be like "Those rustics are at it again".For me it had more of a British Empire colonial war than Space Vietnam.

And then maybe later in their careers they both had had to pick sides as the Emperor came into power. Anakin would have been a little bit closer to middle age, a seasoned warrior who was taken in by the dark side, not a twenty-something complainer. Keep the duel that almost killed Vader, but lose all the drama of Padme's broken heart and all that crap.

Exactly. It's literally just a bunch of colors swirling around a giant area with poo poo dying left and right, as well as awful CG like when Padme rides on that chariot thing. I have to disagree. The early part of the giant creature fight is probably the best bit of the movie. It's so tacky, it's like something you'd see on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys or some old Flash Gordon show. You were even able to keep track of the action because it was just main characters, giant monsters and geonosian guards onscreen rather than ten million things happening at once. Prisoners being forced to fight alien monsters in gladiatorial battles for an overlord's amusement is the kind of lovingly b-grade stuff the prequels needed more of.

Vader captures Juno and tries to make Starkiller submit, but Juno gets one of Starkiller's sabers and attacks (and apparently wounds?) Vader. Vader Force Pushes her and seemingly kills her, and then Starkiller goes apeshit and almost kills Vader. Kota urges Starkiller not to kill Vader.

(This is really clearly where the Good/Evil choice will be)

Starkiller decides not to kill Vader. It turns out Juno was just fine. Since nobody knows if Starkiller is really a clone or not, the good guys decide to keep him a secret. Also so the Rebel Alliance won't learn to depend on him too much. Vader is taken off the the Rebel's base as a prisoner. To Be Continued
