I've lost track of how many times I've caught him playing. His 'last tune' in Croatia was 2 CDs and a vinyl, double dropped with teases of the third track's synths. Makes it look effortless.

It's pretty decent and well-produced, but it could just do with some more interesting ideas. You obviously have a good ear for melody and the way things interact, as well as good production skills, so I just think you could make something a lot more interesting than this, which is just kind of Netsky-ish. Just my input, nothing more than constructive criticism :) still impressed. Lots of potential.

Does anyone here like the darker, less liquid side of dnb? I mean, I can listen to Hospital mixes all day, but what really gets me going is stuff like Ohm Resistance/Obliterati -- you know, the crazy skullfucking tracks.

For instance, Temulent - "Mahalito" was the first dnb tune I ever heard, and it was at that moment I went, "Oh poo poo yes, I need more of this in my life":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oboxZlmWQw
I later played it for another dnb neophyte, and he described it as, "the song I'd want to be playing before murdering someone." Which is...a little harsh, honestly, but whatever. Temulent and Submerged have some far more brutal tracks. I think all three versions of "Suicide Hotline" are on Beatport now if you want to hear something intense.

Am having trouble finding a streamable copy online, but Todd Buckler's "Chi/Early Morning Blues" is a good 12". I dunno if it came out on more than promos, but I think Buckler did do an LP later on that has both tracks. Temulent later did the "Chi Reshape" remix, which does some shifty things with the drum breaks that consistently blow my mind.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6N292IsxCo

Also, looks like Silent Killer just released a followup to Everyone Bleeds:
http://soundcloud.com/silentkiller/...m_term=20101011
I wasn't a huge fan of his first album, but it has some epic atmospheric moments and is great long-night-road-trip music.

For anyone still interested in dnb for newbs, the girl who got me hooked on dnb loaned me DJ Dara's "History of Our World" parts 1 and 2. I don't know how hard it is to find, and I don't even know if I have any copies anymore. I hope I do, because it's a pretty good overview of pre-dnb ragga, jungle, hardcore, and breaks stuff before things really went all out. The BMPs are lower (I think she has one pre-2000s mix CD called "Speed Limit 145" that's marketed to be WOAH, FAST), and the bass has a very different timbre (more big, hollow sine wave sounds, less wobble), but it's great music and it gives you a good idea of how drum n bass evolved.

...which isn't to say I'm only hot for the aggressive stuff. I love a good vocal track, especially someone remixes La Roux into dnb or dubstep -- the first time I'd been to a club in ages, the DJ played out Nero's remix of "I'm Not Your Toy," and I thought my spine was gonna melt. So good.

This isn't my first post in here about Netsky's album, but I think it's a pretty important release. In my opinion, it's the most cohesive DNB album since albums like Era Of Diversion and Tough Guys Don't Dance came out a couple years ago. The synth lines in each song are so memorable. And I think everyone who enjoys this kind of sound should be listening.

Ok, I understand you're a BIG fan of Netsky's album but I really have to disagree with the statement I've bolded. There have been many other "more cohesive" albums released recently that maybe you haven't had any exposure to:

Mutt - Treading Water

Break - Symmetry

Logistics - Crash Bang Wallop!

Chase & Status - More than Alot

State of Mind - Faster than Light

Camo & Krooked - Above & Beyond

Telemetrik - My Lightyear

The Upbeats - Big Skeleton

Bachelors of Science - Warehouse Dayz (one of my personal favorites)

Breakage - Foundation

Lynx & Kemo - The Raw Truth

Sub Focus - Sub Focus

The Qemists - Spirit in the System

Alaska - The Mesozoic Era (totally under-rated drumfunk album)

Fanu - Homefree

Noisia - Split The Atom

The Panacea - The Chiropteran

Implex & Enei - Sublife

Mistabishi - Drop

Calibre - Shelflife Vol. 2

Blu Mar Ten - Natural History

ASC - The Astral Traveler

Counterstrike - Insubordination

Alix Perez - 1984

How many of these albums (or artists) have you listened to?

The rest of those albums have a few tracks like that, but not almost every track on the album.

Sub Focus' album came very close to doing that for me, but Netsky's just goes all the way with it. That may be just me, though. That's why I made sure to say "in my opinion" before that statement.

Well, based on this response, the only albums you have listened to are the popular ones. I'm not trying to tell you what to listen to and I'm not saying the Netsky album is bad, but I think you're missing what I am trying to say. The Netsky album is very catchy, but to call it "the most cohesive" album is a bit presumptuous without a larger sample size. That's like saying the latest Ke$ha album is great because it's catchy. No one's going to listen to it in 2 years, so enjoy it while it's popular, I guess.

I won't deny that I play a few Netsky tracks in my gigs and on my radio show, but an entire set of that over-produced unoriginal synth will turn the average listener away. Netsky's best tunes aren't even on his album. Hell, they're not even on the same label. Drum & Bass does actually exist outside of RAM and Hospital Records, you know.

Edit: Monkey, I think you and I clash a lot because you're the opposite of a true dnb listener. This isn't a bad thing, but coming from a DJ who has been neck deep in dnb for quite some time, you have a very "pop" taste in dnb. No hate bro :respek::cool:

I know, I know. I've heard his non-album tracks and think they're loving awesome. Not saying that those labels are the only drum and bass out there, just saying that their stuff is usually what I find myself most attracted to.

And honestly, I still get excited every time I listen to albums like Tough Guys Don't Dance and Era Of Diversion. So I think I probably will enjoy listening to Netsky's self-titled a few years down the road. Ke$ha is just flavor-of-the-week pop poo poo, and I doubt she'll have much staying power (at least I hope she doesn't). Netsky's self-titled is just one of those albums that sticks with me, and probably still will in a few years.

All this talk of artists I don't know makes me feel so new. Which, I guess, is somewhat true. My past drum & bass experience started with Hold Your Colour, like a lot of people I guess. I also picked up (over the years) Calyx and Teebee's Anatomy; Calyx's No Turning Back; and Ed Rush & Optical's Wormhole, The Creeps, and The Original Doctor Shade. Within the last year I've bought Dieselboy's Substance D and Noisia's Split the Atom.

I've really enjoyed all of it but based around recommendations both here and from other people I bought a bunch of stuff this week. My wallet hates you all, because its probably going to be bleeding even more now.

When I first got into dnb, I listened to Pendulum's Hold Your Colour pretty often. While I'd love to say "it stuck with me" there are maybe 2 tracks from that album I'd listen to myself, let alone submit others to. You'd probably be pretty interested in a lot of the dnb I started with as a wee DJ, but I hardly play any of it anymore.

Monitors won't really help, you still need a subwoofer. You can do a pretty decent mix with a decent 5.1 or even 2.1 computer speaker setup, don't believe me? It's what High Contrast used before he got signed to Hospital. Also, headphone mixing will make you go deaf quicker. If all else fails, you can make a song, burn it to a cd or whatever and play it in your car to see how the bass fairs.

I appreciate all the facets of DNB. As I've said before, Dieselboy's The Human Resource was what really got me into drum and bass in the first place. While I enjoy that darker, harder, grimier stuff from time to time, I find liquid to be generally much more appealing to listen to.

It's not that I hate certain styles/artists of DNB, I'd just rather listen to stuff like Netsky / High Contrast / Danny Byrd / etc. on a more regular basis than I would artists like Dieselboy / Black Sun Empire / Spor etc. Evol Intent's Era Of Diversion is an exception, though. I can throw on that album whenever and immediately get sucked into it.
