I'm sure there's a scientific or psychological explanation for why colors projected onto a pure white image come out in the exact same color...I just don't know what it is. Can anyone link me to the explanation?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, but a pure white surface is one that reflects all light equally and nearly completely, so none of it is absorbed which could change the overall color.

nesbit37 posted:Short answer is no. This type of thing is a huge undertaking, not only because of the amounts of materials but also even knowing just what exists. Cataloging on the magnitude you are asking about is nearly impossible, especially for a sole institution. Add to the number of potential images to the extreme difficulty of describing images via text (graphics cataloging) and you have something that will probably never be complete and consolidated, even for one particular type of medium and period. Yeah, that's about what I expected. There's little hope then that I'll be able to find the same engraving that was in my hotel room in Bahrain last week.

How do independent psychics make money? You know, the people with a neon sign out front that reads "TAROT READING / $10." I'm sure there are certain crazy customers who consult these types before every major decision, but when I'm out driving in the sticks I see at least 2-3 psychic services in each small town. I have no idea how they actually make enough to pay the mortgage. Are they selling drugs or trafficking in prostitutes on the side or something?

Besides other businesses, online and vanilla, psychics have a number of scams they run on people who seem to be good marks, the most common is charging the $10 for a reading and then discovering a dangerous curse that they charge $$$ to remove "because of the spiritual drain and risks involved." Even more often they establish a rapport with a client who sees them regularly, like an analyst. Since they are great at cold reading this can actually help some people, but I still believe it to be unethical.

It's probably a bit of "blue car syndrome" as far as the numbers of places you see; I knew someone who did it and it was pretty much half money motivated and the other half crazy motivated. Actually it was probably more 80/20 crazy/money. I don't think I am exaggerating a bit when I say that the psychic/paranormal fans make religious zealots look apathetic.

First, don't assume that they even are making money. You can ask that question about any small business and the answer is very often "They're not making money, they just haven't reached the point of failure quite yet." But, if they are, I can think of a few possible reasons. They probably carry pretty low expenses. The places I'm thinking of often seem to be operating out of a home, maybe just a trailer on a small piece of cheap land, usually not what you'd think of as pricey commercial real estate. Could easily share space and split the cost with a beauty salon or something like that. Locations probably skew toward small towns, semirural areas with low cost of living. Inventory is just books, DVDs, "blessed candles" and trinkets like that -- non-perishable, easy to store with massive room for markup. Unlikely to employ more than a single part-time minimum wage cashier to ring up that junk while the proprietor is out, small enough to avoid some of the costly hassles like health insurance that even slightly larger businesses are subject to. And, like The Aphasian said, the proprietors self-select for skill at manipulation and the customers for gullibility. These people should be practiced at getting maximum value out of marks who are happy to play along. And while they might not be fronts for drugs or prostitution, it does seem like a low-effort, flexible profession that would be easy to sustain as a secondary source of income alongside something more conventional.

I think you mentioned the thing that would get him in the most "trouble" while still being legal. The drill sergeants do not open their mail but you should send stuff with the thought that others will see it considering the barracks are open and privacy is pretty uncommon.

I'm using XP SP3 and FF is my default browser. I've got some Microsoft training stuff that I've been given and it needs to be run in IE. I can accomplish this either by opening IE and opening the file, or doing Start > Run > iexplore.exe "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Learning\6245\CompanionContent\default.htm". Is there a way I can make a shortcut that does this? When I try to make a shortcut to that same path it says it's invalid. When I try to make a shortcut including the fully qualified path of iexplore.exe it also says it's invalid. Any ideas?

FLX posted:When I "like" a page of an artist/a company on Facebook, is it the same as being "friends" with them? I.e. can they see my full profile and news feed? No. Those pages are run by admins, usually the Facebook accounts of people who work at the agency that runs the brand's page. When said admin logs on, they can try and view your page, but their account still isn't friends with yours so they can only see as much as you've deemed OK for strangers to see. It's a bit annoying for those of us who run brand pages sometimes, because some people don't even let strangers see the 'send a message' link on their page, and that's pretty annoying when they've been spamming/swearing/requesting help on the page and you can't contact them.

A good boy posted:Question regarding the English language. Turned down is rejected, turned up could be anything without more context. For example, if this is a lyric from a band they could be saying a producer turned them up (listening volume) then rejected them. It could be a lazy way of saying "got us excited, disappointed us".

I've been reading about the domain name system and address resolution and poo poo on Wikipedia and I still don't really get it. Is there a physical server somewhere that holds the master list of domains and IPs and allows me to see the same somethingawful.com as some kid in Italy? How does an internet IP become "registered" or whatever it is that binds the number to the physical location? Is there a point a-point b-point c explanation for this or do I just have to learn more about networking before it makes sense to me?

Yes there is physical servers around the globe that serve "root" DNS needs. It works from right to left. Root servers handle the most basic of queries for domain information and send nameserver requests for specific host information of to the domain intended. A root server knows who serves the records for ".com", ".net" etc, and also who serves records for "somethingawful.com" they do not know who "forums" or "www" somethingawful.com is so they refer the requests off to the SA nameserver. http://www.zoneedit.com/doc/dns-basics.html

There are 13 such servers, mostly owned by very large telecom companies or government departments. quote:How does an internet IP become "registered" or whatever it is that binds the number to the physical location? "Domain name registrars" are companies authorized to make changes to the master list of domain names. All the domain name servers talk to each other so that changes made by one company are spread around to all of them.

Most casinos offer beginners classes on how to play the games in the mornings. Some even give you money to gamble while you learn.

I'm looking for a flight from Atlanta to PDX, and I honestly don't care how many stops there are. What's the best way to do this? It seems like the best price for the dates I'm looking is $420 but, well, that's a lot. Any tips to finding the absolute cheapest flight, a million stops or not?

I like kayak.com, because it will actually show you prices on a calendar, so you can see the difference in prices throughout a month. That can be great if you are flexible on when you travel.

If you are intentionally accessing someones account/information (using/changing their credentials) without their express approval you are committing a crime. That may differ from place to place but the basic rule of thumb is that.
