I think the Criterion in general looks nicer. And it's the correct aspect ratio.

So after buying a new TV, I get $30 in Reward Zone credit from Best Buy, and it's all going towards a new Blu-Ray or two. My choices: - The Darjeeling Limited - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence - Persepolis - Snatch - Crimson Tide

Picked up the Vengeance Trilogy tin from Best Buy the other day, it was marked as $60 but rang up at $50 (same price as Amazon, but I'm pretty sure the tin is best-buy exclusive).

The contrast / color timing of the releases are different, so I guess everyone will have their own subjective opinion about which looks better in that regard. But in terms of pure image quality and resolution, the DVD (of course) doesn't stand a chance. And from reading the review, the DVDBeaver guy says the two sound very similar with the BD perhaps being "marginally crisper" - I don't see anything about the DVD sounding better. On the release front: Lost in Translation 12/7 @ Amazon (still 1/4/2011 everywhere else) Resident Evil: Afterlife - 2D and 3D versions, 12/28

The Young Girls of Rochefort looks great and is region-free... but costs way more than I would spend on that movie.

Got my hands on the 3-disc Apocalypse Now. Other than being DVD-sized, it's a gorgeously-put-together set and I can't wait to pop it in tomorrow. Reviews seem to be universally positive so those screens from earlier were hopefully just an anomaly. Don't forget How to Train Your Dragon is out this Friday!

Has anyone confirmed that the Apocalypse Now Full Dossier set is region free? I want to order it from Amazon post haste but only if I can play it.

Last time they did it, they specifically released Shrek 2 on DVD on the same Friday that The Incredibles opened, just so they could crow about how Shrek 2 outgrossed The Incredibles. Of course that completely bit them in the rear end when it turned out they totally overestimated the demand for Shrek 2, and thus overproduced the DVD to the tune of millions and then had the largest retail media return ever when all those unsold copies came back to them by the truckload. To bad they are going to drive it into the ground now. :/ Dreamwork movies always start off pretty good and then the sequels start rolling out then they get more and more stupid and just turn into a movie to keep the kids interested only.

I really hope it doesn't turn into a franchise. It was a good one-off movie that featured Craig Ferguson by trying to cheer a kid up by explaining that his father doesn't hate the way he looks, but rather, his father hates the kind of person he is. And Last of the Mohicans was a very good Bluray. The movie's aged very well.

Now, I'm nostalgic for those old-school PC game boxes, when they were loving huge.
