I just read The Magicians, that everyone recommended, and have to say I was disappointed. It seemed like the guy took a somewhat interesting idea and just didn't have the writing ability to do anything with it. While it's probably fair to say the point of the book is less about magic and more about growing up, interpersonal relations, etc, the magic and fantasy elements just felt way too derivative. None of the characters were really sympathetic, or in the end, all that interesting. It was still kinda fun, but I dunno, just feels like a better writer could have done so much more with it.

It's conceptually similar to Harry Potter, and written with an interesting perspective with regards to a magical education set in the contemporary world. As long as you read more than a few books a year, I don't think it's such a waste of time picking up The Magicians.

The Magicians is okay but really the only similarity is the premise: young(ish) kid doesn't feel at place in the world, learns he is a wizard/magician, gets whisked away to school for magic where he meets new people. When you consider the whole out-of-place child being whisked away to a new life where he/she is actually quite special schtick is the premise of pretty much every fantasy novel, movie, ANIME ever then you realize that The Magicians really isn't that similar to Harry Potter at all.

You're right, the similarities between The Magicians and Harry Potter are equal to the similarities between Ender's Game and Harry Potter, Death Note and Harry Potter, The Lies of Locke Lamora and Harry Potter, Star Wars and Harry Potter, Naruto and Harry Potter, etc. Basically, these are all the same story, with the same characters, the same details, the same narrative structure, the same emphases, and the same conclusions. None of these are any more like each other than any of the others. Luke Skywalker is as much like Ender Wiggin as he is like Light Yagami.

That's why I think it's a neat book that's worth reading by a Harry Potter fan because one of the only similarities is the premise. You can see how a very similar concept is treated by two different authors with divergent intents. I do think the similarity isn't as much "fish out of water" which is a common trope as you say but the treatment of magical educational in the contemporary world. I think Grossman does a much better job with showing how magic exists in the 20th century than Harry Potter. Of course the intended audiences are very different. The Magicians isn't Harry Potter 2.0, but it is still a book that I think Harry Potter readers would get a kick out of or at least find it worthy of discussion.

It does a better job of integrating magic into the real world than Harry Potter, but then the second half of the book throws all that out the window. Much like the characters, I think Grossman had no idea where to go with it after they finished school. In fairness though, I guess, Rowling glosses over that completely.
