I want some RAGTIME piano. We were listening to some of it in my musical appreciation class and I have been really enjoying it. We didn't really stray to far away from talking about Scott Joplin, but I'm defiantly looking for something very energetic and fast, the best ragtime!

I've had an album of circus music for awhile, and it just occurred to me that I don't really know what "type" of music that is, or how to find more like it. Stuff like Entry of the Gladiators is what I'm talking about here. Is it classical? And what composers are associated with that kind of music?

I don't know if this quite constitutes "ragtime," but it's neat piano music. I'm always picking up entertaining-looking vinyl records from thrift stores, and one day I came across this: Crazy Otto rules. I especially like the parts where he's just so into it he unconsciously begins going "la la da-daaa" along with the music. Here, I found some samples on the internet. I guess you can still buy his stuff! http://www.ilike.com/artist/Crazy+Otto/songs There's also a mention on the back of the record about some electric noisemaking box or something he invented, but it doesn't make an appearance in the music. Unfortunate.

I'm a big fan of remixes/covers of classical music. Some examples of what I'd like to hear more of are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqkFgeBFTWU - Vanessa Mae cover of Vivaldi's "Summer: III. Presto" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by8oyJztzwo - JerryC cover of Pachelbel's "Canon in D" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5fa2GXVWzw - Galbatron cover of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" Anyone know any other songs/groups I could look up for similar stuff?

Check out their "Pictures at an Exhibition," which is indeed an album-length rock adaptation of the Mussorgsky work. Other tracks to check out include Jethro Tull's "Bouree," Curved Air's "Vivaldi," and King Crimson's "The Devil's Triangle" (Holst's Mars - The Bringer of War). And, though it's not a cover, you might want to check out Yes's "The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun)" if you're a fan of Stravinsky. Not sure how much success I'll have with this here, but does anyone know of any artists doing the electro/techno/ghettotech hybrid style of Aux 88? I know the Direct Beat label is kind of the home for this stuff, and I like some DJ Assault and DJ Godfather stuff where they tone down the silly lyrics and amp up the bleep bloop. Anything else? Also, anything like this or this. Instrumental, atmospheric, melodic synth music with a vintage analog sound. Preferably something that maintains some kind of forward movement throughout the song, rather than being totally recursive like the more poppy minimal synth groups or pure directionless noodling like most of the 'experimental' guys (although ultimately I'll take recursion over twenty minutes of noodling, I like this for example). I'm already familiar with the Strange Life label and John Carpenter's work, anything else? alpiger fucked around with this message at 00:50 on Oct 10, 2010 |

I'm looking to start getting more into metal. I've looked at a few of the pages of both the sludge and regular metal threads and found a few things I liked and wanted a bit of guidance. Currently I'm really looking for more music like Dimmu Borgir - Vredesbyrd (I didn't like their other songs on that album.. they weren't really the same). I also really liked Sworn - The Beauty of My Funeral . I am still sort of trying to find out what sub-genre in metal I like!

One of my favorites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhwOyq_rzkI new favorite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld5aW0C5iWk also great, really just a sped up kraftwerk song but its great https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TvBIfaJPi8 Or you could go back to the roots of that poo poo and check out some Miami bass, which you're probably familiar with anyway. But, Bass Computer by Techmaster P.E.B. has massive bass, no rapping and a big detroit techno influence. Some wicked sampling and mixxing on it. The warning on the cover isn't lying by the way... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHRN5kErs5c fake edit: didn't see that you like the toned down lyrics, so maybe disregard Mr. De' and DJ Deeon. You'd probably like N-Ter and Starski & Clutch a lot then. Any jittin' music should do you fine The Doo Do Chasers fucked around with this message at 08:45 on Oct 11, 2010 |

I'm definitely down with old Miami bass stuff, although I wish the tempo was higher. Any specific recommendations you could offer given that or is it just a matter of finding the more electro-influenced tracks from the same group of producers? I don't have any real problem with goofy lyrics by the way I just generally find that stuff tends to be less musically interesting to me, maybe that is more a matter of the aforementioned 4 on the floor thing though.

Over the past year I really got into 70's psychedelia and the modern bands that are influenced by it, but I feel that I'm still missing out on some great stuff. I really like blues influences and the occasional riff (huge fan of desert/stoner/doom stuff) and currently I'm into bands like: Tame Impala Sleepy Sun Earthless Quest For Fire Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound Out of those mentioned I absolutely adore Tame Impala's debut album and Sleepy Sun's Fever is incredible. And Earthless is just amazing in every way possible. In short, I'm looking for bands similar to the above. No matter what decade.

Henry Fungletrumpet posted:All good suggestions and similar to what I'm after, but I'm more interested in purely instrumental bands. Some incidental vocals here and there are fine, like on the level that some post-rock/metal bands use them (not after post-rock/metal, though). I recommended Pierre Moerlen's Gong earlier in the thread to the guy who wanted vibraphone-heavy music, and I recommend them to you as well. They thankfully didn't sing very much as they were neither good vocalists nor lyricists. Gazeuse!, Expresso II, Downwind, Time is the Key, and Leave It Open are all very good albums. Indukti make some really fantastic instrumental progressive metal. It's not all instrumental, and their lyrics are... not good, but you can skip over those tracks. They were absolutely amazing live, and it's very frustrating that they don't have a live album out. Ozric Tentacles are virtuosic instrumental space rock, but I have trouble recommending a specific album as there are very few weak ones, and the cliche that they've spent their whole career remaking the same great album is more true than I would sometimes like to admit. Erpland and Strangeitude are probably their quintessential albums. Given your tastes I expect you're probably already familiar with them, but oh well. In a similar vein to the Ozrics are Quantum Fantay. I really like their album Ugisiunsi. And I won't suggest Magma because they're a very vocal-oriented band, but check out the Magma side project One Shot. The title track from Ewaz Vader rules so hard. No good quality version of that on youtube, unfortunately. Rollersnake fucked around with this message at 18:16 on Oct 15, 2010 |

(just kidding) (a little) most people just starting tend to like the "alternative hip hop" thing, so you would probably enjoy stuff like the Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and the Roots. i recommend going through the hip hop megathread, a fair bit of really good stuff goes through there. also just look at stuff produced by J Dilla

Looking for two kinds of recommendations here: First up is Todd Edwards. I only have his Nervous tracks, but most of it is spectacular. The rest of his discography is kind of daunting, and I'm not sure where to go further. So I'd like know a few singles and albums that would be considered his best work. I'm also looking if there is any vibraphone distortion that sounds anything like this.
