I can't imagine trading that bad boy for a cruiser, especially with the performance mods the previous owner did. Why spend money on steering dampeners and bigger rotors when you just want to buy a cruiser anyways?

I know a number of guys who have traded in their sport bikes or dual sports for cruisers as they got older, fatter, and lazier. They still want to ride, they just don't want to put any effort into it anymore.

Every time I see those hideous 80's touring fairings I laugh my rear end off. They're so GODDAMN HUGE. Almost as bad as the terrible King and Queen seats also popular in that era. The 80's was the worst time for bikes.

Well, I am now in possession of that 86 VF500f I posted earlier. Neutral is a bit tough to find, but otherwise shifts perfectly. No bad sounds from the engine, so hopefully the cam has been getting a proper thrashing and has stayed oiled. And god drat that engine sound.

Not sure what the market price is on the Kawi ZRX1200r, but I recently stumbled upon this bike and man, did my heart skip a beat (I know its a lot of power, but damned if I wouldn't spend endless time on it, learning it's limits). Then as luck would have it, this bad boy popped up. http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/mcy/2029404633.html Anyone have any experience with this bike? Its pretty much THE bike I have decided I would settle down and grow old with...for the right price

They're awesome, bulletproof bikes though, can't go wrong with them at all.

Lord Master posted:Ungnghh.. I have the money for it, but no endorsement. Please tell me I'd be dumb to jump on this. 80's XT500 are great, durable and fun bikes. You should definitely buy it. If you end up buying it, also budget for suspension- and brake-upgrades and a 34mm Mikuni flatslide carburetor. Whatever you plan, please budget for at least a brake upgrade. Stock brakes are poo poo on that bike. Also you should get new tires immediately. No matter how good they might look, they will not be rideable after all those years in storage.

This looks like a pretty good deal. We usually have hilariously overpriced dual sport bikes, I guess it's probably the time of year to buy. If I were looking for a bike like this I'd be all over it. Link if anyone is interested: http://williamsport.craigslist.org/mcy/2030081983.html

http://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/mcy/2039452522.html I emailed the guy, this was his response: quote:it needs a new brake pedal, right handle bar is bent, some scratches/ scuffs, engine sounds fine, bike has been sitting for a few months and I jump started it earlier today. I'm charging the battery tonight to see if it holds. Sounds like it's been dropped on the right and needs a good carb cleaning. I could get handlebars and the little stuff fixed up for pretty cheap. Would this be a good deal on a small fixer-upper to use for 6 months before upgrading to something bigger?

If there's no rust and it starts up quickly from a cold engine then yes. Parts can be surprisingly expensive and add up fast, but I would guess you could make it in good operable condition for a few hundred bucks. Carb cleanings aren't too bad and are a good thing to experience at least once. To be sure to price in a new chain, sprockets, and tires because they all probably need replacing.

Any thoughts on this bike? 86 Transalp, 33k, $2200. It's not that I NEED a Transalp or even a second bike, but boy would I love one. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/mcy/2039744787.html Edit with some more info from the guy: future Transalp non-owner posted:Here is a link to pics on this bike, as far is service, I did a complete service on the bike, bike starts right-up and runs as it should, the clocks don't work at low RPM's but they work fine at 2.5k and up. And a couple of the pictures he sent. From the other pictures the bike looks pretty clean, some paint chipping on the forward edge of the starboard fairing vent and maybe some bondo and repainting on the tail. I need to ask him about those two things. ought ten fucked around with this message at 17:33 on Nov 3, 2010 |

He updated http://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/mcy/2039991191.html The fairing doesn't bother since I would probably convert it to nekked, and the small stuff I listed is no problem either, but the "small oil leak" is a sign of big trouble, no? I think the general CA advice was leak = run? Also looks like the clutch cable is wrapped in tape or is that a lovely picture of the metal wrap?

Lord Master posted:He updated Its a lovely picture of the metal wrap. I'd show up and offer 500$. The oil leak could just be a leaking crush washer, it could be some other stuff...worst case you could part it out or pick up a cheap second bike and make one good one out of 2 bad ones. I second what hayden. says and I'd say that if you can start and run it from cold you're probably good to go. 700$ motorcycle, expect to have to put some work into it.
