I really liked the improvements to the video quality and especially the sound quality. I'm just happy to be having a blu-ray version of the alien collection as Alien is one of my favorite all time movies. Aliens ranks up too.

Any idea of when we will be able to buy Alien without the set? I love the first one, but don't really care for the rest of the series and can't justify paying $80 for only one movie I'll watch.

That's really incredible. I'm not a huge fan of the movie either, but I haven't seen it in a while. Between the incredible restoration job done and the digibook, I'll definitely be giving this one another look.

This is going to sound really ignorant because I am kinda new to high def media and Blu Ray in particular but could someone explain to me what's so bad about the BttF transfer? I don't mean to be an rear end but I really don't know...
This whole thing is very intriguing to me because of how nitpicky everyone is being about it (as I too am a nitpicker).

I kinda feel like Ethan Suplee in Mallrats staring at the Magic Eye, when every other dude and little kid can see the sailboat and he couldn't, even though he wanted to SO BAD.

In this long line, there's been some real strange genes. You've got 'em all, with some extras thrown in.
I don't see the big deal, either. I can see some crappy edge enhancement in the close-ups and that's about it. It's a lot better than the comparison shots.

The sad part is, he wasn't always evil.
I think there's a big, big difference between AVSForum sperging that sparks/arrows/whatever have disappeared from a screenshot, and multiple screenshots demonstrating , at least at certain times, DNR and/or excessive sharpening.

I don't know where the Canal+ screenshots have disappeared to but you could basically just mimic the Blu-Ray by adding Remove Scratches/Gaussian Blur and Unsharp Mask filters in Photoshop.

It's not a disaster, it even looks good at times. But it could have been much, much better.

Finally able to sit down and watch Apocalypse Now on blu-ray. I'm sure this question gets asked a lot in CD, but which version is most recommended for a first-time viewer? Is it purely a matter of opinion, or is it like the difference between the Blade Runner theatrical and directors cut in terms of definitive superiority?

I think almost everyone agrees that the original cut is far superior. Now that I think about it I'm not sure I've ever met anyone who prefered Redux.

I'd watch the original. If you end up really digging it, then dive into Redux. I think it's safer for you to watch and enjoy the original film so many other people love, than to watch the three and a half hour cut, and run the risk of being bored by it - and forever hate the film in any form.

Plus, in a lot of cases, it's good to watch the shorter cuts of films the first time through. Obviously you're going to have a lot of exceptions to the rule, but I can't even watch the theatrical cut of Aliens because I'm only thinking about the stuff that was removed from the longer director's cut. It's better to re-watch a movie with additional material rather than less.

The only film I can think of off the top of my head that has a better Extended Cut than Theatrical is The Abyss, which isn't exactly a great movie anyway.

On a different note - I really really want to see the supposedly darker edit of Mel Gibson's Payback. They remove the narration, change the score, and change the washout visual effect.

That the only version available on Blu-Ray. I didn't think much of it. It wasn't all that dark besides Mel beating his (I think) wife at the beginning and the end was anti-climatic since they cut everything with Kris Kristoffersen
