So in my search for a DD since my mr2 got totaled, I think I found something finally.

1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R - $1900

I've always loved this generation se-r for some reason, and this one seems pretty clean. Anything I should be looking for in particular when I go look at it?

vvv I heard about the 5th gear issue, but it sounds like this one doesnt have that issue. The guy said that the clutch cable needs to be replaced, but it still drives fine, clutch just engages late. Also, being in seattle, I'm not too worried about rust, since it isn't a huge issue here, but I'll check the radiator support and trunk to be sure.

There's lots of cars with 5th-gear popout. My friend told me this about them:

MAKE SURE YOU LOOK AT THE LOWER RADIATOR SUPPORT CAUSE THATS ALWAYS BEEN A PROBLEM!!! If it is rusty to the point where you think it might need work its probly not a good idea to buy it. Also they like to rot out in the truck area on the wheel well (push down hard on both they might break). Look in the oil cap and see if you can see if its clean or sludgy.

These are some smokin' deals on two (three!) classic rides for under $1,000. I wish I had the space or need for three extra cars, because I would seriously buy all three without hesitation.

1962 and 1963 International Scout trucks, one a 2WD and one a 4WD for $499 and $599.

I am going to be moving to Tokyo in 2 1/2 months. I think during my time there I may get a car which I would be able to bring back to the US. If I return in 2016, that would mean I could only get something as new as 1991. Which rules out the AZ-1. :(

(But it doesn't rule out the Beat.)

The Beat is the cheapest of the 3 sporty Kei cars, its also the most common, and is N/A so I'd say its probably the easiest to work on. Mugen also still makes a lot of their cool aftermarket stuff for it. I'd actually love a beat with the removable hardtop, and all the mugen performance goodies.

The AZ-1 is my favourite hands down though, and would make such an awesome fun to drive commuter car. The Kei cars cost like 25 bucks to fill a tank and get insane mpg. I'd love an AZ-1 with the ARC intercooler upgrade and airbox, and get one of those full titanium exhaust setups they sell for it, good set of tires, and you'd have a loving insanely fun car thats still decently fast in a straight line, and gets wicked gas mileage.

It says it's a shell, but it's got axles etc., all it needs is an engine+transmission? Or am I completely wrong?

If so, that seems extremely cheap to me, unless it's just the fibreglass shell and hardly anything mechanical, in which case it's still pretty cheap.

Go for it. Rock LeMons the Nascar way! (But remember to turn right once in a while)

Everything using the M60 V8 did. 540, 740, 840. So, yes, although if a Nikasil engine hasn't shown any problems yet, it isn't going to. The US gas (which was at the heart of the problems) was fixed years ago.
