Honest Thief posted:The extended cut of Alien has some glaring pacing issues, like with Ripley finding what happened with the crew. I watched it a week ago and I don't recall any of this? Do you mean where they figure out Dallas is an android and he tries suffocating Ripley? That scene was terrifying and I think the effects work was fine? And what do you mean her finding out what happened to the crew? Also was the sex scene in the original version or Extended cut? I swear to god I remember a sex scene somewhere when I watched it years ago, but it was absent from the Anthology version... edit: One thing I do like about the Extended version is at the end when everyone else is xenomorph food other than Ripley. She's running around the ship and all that? To me that's the most terrifying moment of the film because you have no idea where that drat creature is so you're in her head for the entire last act. That was what made it for me. That entire sequence was longer than the original theatrical version I believe. edit 2: Oh I realize that you mean when she finds the crew pinned up in the goo-web. I actually liked that. Preston Waters fucked around with this message at 18:57 on Oct 26, 2010 |

That scene was terrifying and I think the effects work was fine? Right about when she starts the self-destruct sequence, Ripley stops along the way to find out that her old crew is all stickied to the walls, revealing some eating habits of the creature, and then she torches them all. To me, it ruins the urgency of the moment, just to show some neat little detail of the creature.

I remember seeing Aliens on network TV in the early 90's, and it was my favorite cut of the movie because the only thing they added was the sentry gun scene. Everything else in the extended Aliens is unnecessary IMO

Assuming the amazon one is the same, that should work out fine. I can use the 3rd disc on my xbox or something as long as the first two work on my PS3. This is actually my first time getting an import bluray.

Where does it state this? My understanding is there is the set on blu-ray or DVD. The blu-ray set has 3 blu-ray discs, and the DVD set has 3 DVD discs, there are no mixed sets.

Straight from the horse's mouth (an email response from an Arrow rep): quote:Of the three discs of the Limited Edition Blu-ray, two are blu-ray discs where the features and the extras are playable on US blu-ray players. The third disc is indeed a Region 0 PAL DVD so if you PAL can handle a PAL signal you will be fine. Aside from the third discs there are two booklets, a comic, a poster and 8 postcards so if the third disc is a problem you still have quite a bounty of extras!

Alien Anthology is a thing of beauty. I really hope moving forward for big sets like this everyone uses this packaging model; it's so much nicer than a box full of thinpaks or those ugly, awkward LOST-style cases. Really feels like it's worth every cent of the asking price. Also loving the "Reaction to the Film" segments in the documentaries on disc 5. Alien3 is a succession of people saying "well everyone was loving around with Fincher's vision, that's why it sucked" and Resurrection is literally "well the french people loved it!".

The case for the discs themselves sounds better than yours too, it's just a standard foldout thing where the discs press in very simply. Glad I chose to import it, then. Can you confirm that they're region-free? And what about the extras? Are they all in HD, or are there some that are in PAL? Sucks to have to wait until early-mid November to get it, though. I just hope to have it in time for a November 12th marathon screening.

That BTTF US packaging looks terrible. Apparently they've been using that for TV shows as well - House s6, Office s6, and Heroes s4 all have it. Can anyone in the UK with any of those sets chime in on whether Universal uses the lovely packaging there too? Obviously they didn't with the UK BTTF, but that may be because it's only 3 discs instead of 6. I'm curious about the UK House s6 release, specifically.

Pretty sure it's region free since I don't see the 'Region B' logo on the back. Special features it lists as '1080i/p & 480i/p' so they're not all HD but since PAL is 576 lines I think they'll be OK on a US player.

No major studio Region B Blu-Rays use PAL, especially simultaneous global releases.

It's definitely horizontally stretched (SQUISH), and the grain has that blimpy look that you see in Blu-Rays that are simply releases of previous high-def DVD remasterings (though that probably has more to do with the original anamorphic print), but at least it's not DNR'd to hell and back.

Aliens is even better than the screenshots suggested. I've never seen it look anywhere near this good -all the problems it had with murkiness are totally gone, and there's no DNR waxiness. If anything, it looks even more textured than before.

I feel like with every new generation of media, I'm reintroduced to Aliens. I first saw it on a beat-up old VHS where I could barely make anything out, then a slightly less beat-up VHS of the special edition which blew me away at how much story I was missing, then a nice DVD where I saw it in widescreen and was amazed at all the background detail, then the restored DVD from like '06 where it was as good as I ever imagined it getting, then this loving Blu-Ray where I didn't even want to blink while it was going on. For the next generation of media, I fully expect it to do my laundry and suck my dick.
