there are some things in DnB I dont get, one of them is: why does everyone start his own label? I mean seriously, the music is all over the place and there isnt a single source to buy that stuff.

Shame about the two venue setup and the enormous queue to get in, meant I was never going to try to see any of the Hospital lot just in case I never actually got back in again. Yh man they proper hosed us over on the entry situation, I was standing out the front of that club for 2 friggin hours. I'm writing a letter in the style of a 'no poo poo guy' and getting my money back. Apart from that it was sick, I think I caught most of Emalkay, a bit of Calibre and was dippin hard to Calyx & Teebee. Went to some crazy house party afterwards and got to bed at 9.30am.

So Metrik's got a new EP coming out soon in November called The Departure. So far it sounds good. They came out with a trailer showing off one of the tracks, "T-1000" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ER--xL_Fsg I'm not overly familiar with Metrik, but his track "Lightspeed" on Viper's Summer Slammers is great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do-QskTo9mo I've also just taken up a recent liking to Camo & Krooked too. These guys are producing some excellent stuff right now. They just released 2 tracks on Breakbeat Kaos, and they are both absolutely awesome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewDP0XnKxio - "Can't Get Enough" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhFes-wXOvM - "Without You" They also have a sweet track vs. Friction featuring Dynamite MC called "Stand Up" that gets stuck in my head a lot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy5Psm3PmX4 Dr. Goonstein fucked around with this message at 03:08 on Oct 24, 2010 |

But what is the thing with all of the different record labels for artists? Those new tracks from Camo & Krooked are their from Breakbeat Kaos, and that's the first release apparently on there. Do labels just hire them for a couple songs and then just let another label do the same? I'm so lost.

Dr. Goonstein posted:I know that I'm not in the know of many drum and bass artists as i've only been listening for like half a year, if that even. You've got lots of ground to cover then; Metalheadz is one of the seminal D&B labels. I could give you my impressions on where to start, what path to take, etc. But, the truth is, it's probably best to just let you discover a lot of the genre on your own through rigorous investigation. Unless you have any artist-/label-specific questions/queries, that is. As an aside, if you're looking for the definitive Metalheadz experience, you should check out "Platinum Breakz" Vols. 1 & 2; interestingly enough, both released on FFRR just to add to the label confusion. Dr. Goonstein posted:But what is the thing with all of the different record labels for artists? Those new tracks from Camo & Krooked are their from Breakbeat Kaos, and that's the first release apparently on there. Do labels just hire them for a couple songs and then just let another label do the same? I'm so lost. Excepting a few rare instances (Roni Size & Co. with Sony, Photek/Source Direct with Virgin Records), D&B has always been released on small, independent labels. The spirit of community and camaraderie has always been rather rampant among producers (though, there are exceptions), thus you'll see artists spread out releases among a handful of different labels. Sometimes this is due to collaborations, while other times certain labels aim for a "certain sound", so a producer will drop a track in that vein on that particular label. Most of the time, however, it's due to friendships/partnerships forged within the community. Also, FWIW, that Metrik/Camo/Krooked stuff just doesn't do it for me. Sounds very "cookie cutter" to this junglist's ears. C2C - 2.0 fucked around with this message at 05:31 on Oct 25, 2010 |

Some of the bigger names on that Metalheadz list include Calyx, Commix, Concord Dawn, D-Bridge, Dillinja, DJ Fresh, Ed Rush, Goldie, Klute, Optical, Photek, and Teebee. It's okay to not know who they are if you're a beginner coming into DNB with a clean slate, but you're going to at least familiarize yourself with them eventually if you plan on getting big into DNB. Artists like Goldie, Ed Rush, Optical and Photek started out in the 90s and definitely paved the way for the rest of the ones I listed, which are artists that are big players in the scene now. Aside from "Circles", some of my favorite old Adam F tunes are: - "Aromatherapy": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bf557vcKPJg -- reminds me of seeing LTJ Bukem and a couple other UK DJs back in 1996/1997. - "Metropolis": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4LQSiSXsMw -- dark strings, tough, tense breakbeat, the little drum fills. This song is part of what made the Metalheadz label my favorite label when I first got in to drum'n'bass. - "Jaxx": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaKpTAhQfV4 -- the strings are moody, then that kind of robotic "ONE One one...", this was a glimpse of the Blue Note sessions for me. Then when I actually got to go one time, I can't remember what was played other than that Dom & Roland remix of Kaotic Kemistry (super super awesome), and EZ Rollers "Walk This Land". - "Brand Nu Funk": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81L-4BodG6o -- hi mister "rewind me three times" song. The horns in the intro, that "brand new" vocal looping, the chunky rolling drums, the break down with the dark funk keys, and the chopped up hip hop sample, it was fun to hear out.
