The Good posted:This thread has really made me rethink law school as a possible career path. Basically, if I don't do incredibly well on the LSAT, I'll probably reconsider. "Law school" isn't a career path. Law school is what you go through for three years on your way to being a lawyer. If you're not interested in being a lawyer three years from now you shouldn't go to law school.

We seriously only get one LSAT score reported and then it's back to taco chat? I hope some more drift in, mainly from people who've actually posted in this thread before.

So my local law school (University of Nebraska) is low T2, costs less than $14,000 a year for in state students, and claims an employment rate of 88% with a median salary of $52,000. Are they inflating their numbers or is Nebraska a mythical paradise where graduates can actually get a job that allows them to repay their loans in a timely manner? Edit: I have no intention of going to law school, I'm just curious since their claims don't seem to match up with what is posted in this thread. Not only is $52,000 dollars insanely low as a median salary due to the fact that the degree still costs $42,000 above and beyond an undergraduate degree, but it still reflects the bimodal salary division among the legal profession, just in a lower way. In other words, $52,000 median means the top 10% graduates make 85k and everyone else is making $20k. Which means they are counting the bartenders and the "solos" living intheir mom's basement. Does that sound like a great way to spend 42k after whatever you spent on your undergrad?

I put real thought into writing an optional paper for my tax class about the personal income tax consequences (and general tax policy) of interstellar space travel, particularly relativistic problems in slower-than-light travel. It'd be awesome, but I already have 4 papers to write this semester.

Just some more perspective on the instate T2 situation: University of Kentucky is pretty similar. In-state tuition is around 17k, median reported salary is around 70k. I am in (probably) the top third of my class, no journal, and have placed/scored very well at two national trial competitions. I am a non-trad with 4 years active duty USMC and 5 years police officer experience. I clerked at the oldest law firm in Lexington my first summer (97k starting salary) and a small firm last summer (47.5k starting) last summer. The big law firm called me in September to say they weren't hiring anyone() in the Lexington office. I have accepted an offer from the second firm. Here's what my 60k in student loans got me: 47.5k per year with 1900 billable requirement. First 250.00 of group health care plan paid. (p.s. I have a 4 member family, average expected monthly premium is about $1200) 401k contribution. 7 days vacation per year. () Free soft drinks. I left a job making around 30k, so my expenditures and lost wages are around $150k dollars. I won't recoup my investment for at least 7-8 years. That's how long it will take before this "law school" plan starts paying dividends. What I'm saying is that it is a loving stupid idea to go to law school, even if you want to be a lawyer, unless you can do it absolutely free of charge.

Be interesting, and be direct. No women/admissions officer wants to hear about how hard life has been if you cry like a girl about it. You can compel with overcoming the odds only if you actually overcame some long odds (because that would be interesting). Also explain why you want to go to that particular school (people go back and forth on if this is a good idea, I'm strongly in the "yes it is" camp), and what you're trying to do with a law degree. Be mature and centered but not self-centered. Also retake LSAT, you can beat a 161. It's not horrible but its not what you want. sigmachiev fucked around with this message at 19:35 on Oct 30, 2010 |
