What are the rules about writing a press release about yourself and sending it out? I have a friend who has set a pretty impressive world record in sports. The thing is, it's not something that an organization was really keeping track of. I think her story should be told so I was encouraging her to write up a press release and send it out. The problem is, the whole idea of writing a press release touting your own accomplishments seems so self-aggrandizing that it really almost doesn't make sense. So does anyone here work in the media field, and how do you get the majority of your press releases? Do the people send them in themselves or do they have a friend or organization send them in?

The one with the little old dude says "Ojiichan na(ga)ikishitee!" and the old lady one sayd "Obaachan nagaikishitee!" The "ga" on the first one is in parentheses because I think they left out most of the character, but left the little ditto mark/diacritical mark for it. My Japanese is more or less limited to reading the basic alphabet... "Obaachan" means grandma, and "Ojiichan" means grandpa. I have been attempting to make sense of the rest with google and I'm not getting terribly far beyond that. "Nagai" might mean "for a long time" and I feel like "ikishitee" means go or live or something basic like that, but that's more of a feeling than anything else. Hopefully someone else will do a better job

Seconding this, and adding that the way to assure it hits its mark as informative release is to be just that: informative. Stick to simple, straightforward, factual work. "Soandso has done this, this, and this, with plans for this and this in the future." It'll be fine. No one is going to read it and think, "God what a blowhard who cares," they're just going to be scanning it for newsworthy information.

Is there a small banking questions thread? B of A keeps placing "standard holds" on my bi-weekly paychecks, and from all the material I'm reading, as of February its something they aren't allowed to do anymore. When I call them they say tough poo poo, but I feel like they're loving me illegally since the only reason they should be able to do a hold is for NSF reasons, which they're obligated to specify.

I guess I just don't see the risk they seem to be seeing. And it's a pain in the rear end because rent is due on the 1st and they always hold it until the 4th, right when the late fee kicks in.

In addition to what's already been said, I'd recommend you consider just calling the hometown newspaper or dropping by their office, if you're local, and talking to a reporter instead of trying to write something up. If they like the idea they'll just end up talking to the person and rewriting it themselves so you could spare yourself the effort and make more of an impression if you talk to them personally. If you want to contact some larger media outlets that are farther away, then something like a release might be good for that. Important thing is to be sure this information makes it into the hands of someone who might care -- just sending it to a receptionist at the front desk is less likely to work than looking over the paper or whatever, identifying the reporter(s) who looks like they might handle this sort of thing and emailing or calling them directly. But the hometown paper can actually go a long way toward getting more attention -- TV stations in the area will often pick up a story after seeing it in a smaller paper; if it's interesting enough the local paper might push it to a regional Associated Press wire, etc. But either way do contact them. Reporters love this kind of poo poo, especially if there's some novelty value like it's an unusual sport. Compared to the stuff they see every day these are easy to write and unlikely to piss anyone off. Only thing I would note is that since you say there's no organization keeping track of this, you should make sure you can prove to a reasonable extent that the person accomplished what you say and that this actually is a record, that somebody other than yourselves actually cares about this. Not a huge deal, just to the extent that the reporter won't be afraid they're getting pranked.

I am currently studying abroad in New Zealand right now (from the U.S) and I just recently changed my travel plans to leave later than I had originally planned. I was wondering what effect this would have on my student visa? I can't find where it says it expires and I tried to google it but couldn't find anything. if it helps, my original departure was Nov. 18, but now it's Dec. 1st. Thanks.

I was simply wondering if foie gras is very unhealthy as the process behind making it seems like it probably is. I am also an American in New Zealand and, while I can't directly answer your question, the good news is that the immigration department here in Kiwi-land is much more approachable than the behemoth of an organization it is in the US. Just give them a call at 0508558855 (or 09 914 4100 if you're in Auckland) and most times you'll manage to get a real, helpful, English-speaking person on the phone in 15 minutes.

I found 3 larval stage carpet beetles in the last two days. Two of them in the bathroom, the other in the bedroom. There's no carpet in the bathroom, maybe they were thirsty. What should I do? I am a clean person! I have no pets and everything gets vacuumed, mopped, dusted, at least once a week.

I'm a dumbass, and without going into too much detail, a registrar at my university ended up having correct a mistake I had made. This mistake was pretty costly to me, but thanks to this nice registrar's efforts, it has all been sorted out. I'd like to buy her a gift as a token of my appreciation, because I'm sure she could have told me I was out of luck if she wanted to, and because I'm told it was a tedious task fixing my mistake. Any ideas on what would be an appropriate gift for a situation like this? As someone who used to work in higher ed, I would suggest simply a hand-written thank you note and possibly a cupcake like Knightmare suggested. People who work for colleges and universities (especially in non-professor jobs) are underappreciated, and having a student thank you really means a lot.
