I can't imagine trading that bad boy for a cruiser, especially with the performance mods the previous owner did. Why spend money on steering dampeners and bigger rotors when you just want to buy a cruiser anyways?

I know a number of guys who have traded in their sport bikes or dual sports for cruisers as they got older, fatter, and lazier. They still want to ride, they just don't want to put any effort into it anymore.

$300 3.7 gal front tank

That would be a good deal if not for the fact that the KLX stator sucks dicks. 350W Yamaha WR250R stator is really tops in the dual sport market.

80's XT500 are great, durable and fun bikes. You should definitely buy it.

If you end up buying it, also budget for suspension- and brake-upgrades and a 34mm Mikuni flatslide carburetor.

Whatever you plan, please budget for at least a brake upgrade. Stock brakes are poo poo on that bike.

Also you should get new tires immediately. No matter how good they might look, they will not be rideable after all those years in storage.

I sent an email and heard back:

quote:

I got the bike at an auction, and changed a few parts, so I do not have the
history of the bike prior, so all I can tell you are deductions. The bike came
from out of state, it did no have any records at dmv, so it had to pass the chp
inspection, it ran right away, and many of the parts I changed just make it look
better. I took it to Chalie's place and they say it had good compression,
recommended a carb cleanup to start, but because runs great I decided to wait

it says close to 29k miles but the engine does have a different number than the
frame, so it was changed at some point, all the electrical system works
including the starter, the tires look new and recent, front brake works great,
back brake needs a little adjustment (spongy) but works good. the chain need a
little more tension, but it has plenty of space to adjust at the back adjusters

I got a new battery and the alternator works well, but if you ride only in the
city I recommend a charger ones a week to keep the battery always up, I put new
plugs, the coils and points look good. The inside of the tank had surface rust,
I treated it, so it would be important to keep an eye out to check that it does
not come back. The outside of the tank is in good condition, but it has some
fading on the top, and it needs a new cap rubber. It has a matching look set for
ignition, lock and seat with 3 keys

of course there is more details to go through, and I would love to tell you all
in person

How much should I be worried? I don't plan to ride on the highway, so I guess I should buy a battery charger?

Bikes are awesome, but I know so little about them.

it needs a new brake pedal, right handle bar is bent, some scratches/ scuffs, engine sounds fine, bike has been sitting for a few months and I jump started it earlier today. I'm charging the battery tonight to see if it holds.

Sounds like it's been dropped on the right and needs a good carb cleaning.
I could get handlebars and the little stuff fixed up for pretty cheap. Would this be a good deal on a small fixer-upper to use for 6 months before upgrading to something bigger?

If there's no rust and it starts up quickly from a cold engine then yes. Parts can be surprisingly expensive and add up fast, but I would guess you could make it in good operable condition for a few hundred bucks. Carb cleanings aren't too bad and are a good thing to experience at least once.

To be sure to price in a new chain, sprockets, and tires because they all probably need replacing.

From the other pictures the bike looks pretty clean, some paint chipping on the forward edge of the starboard fairing vent and maybe some bondo and repainting on the tail. I need to ask him about those two things.

The fairing doesn't bother since I would probably convert it to nekked, and the small stuff I listed is no problem either, but the "small oil leak" is a sign of big trouble, no?
I think the general CA advice was leak = run?

Its a lovely picture of the metal wrap.

I'd show up and offer 500$. The oil leak could just be a leaking crush washer, it could be some other stuff...worst case you could part it out or pick up a cheap second bike and make one good one out of 2 bad ones.

I second what hayden. says and I'd say that if you can start and run it from cold you're probably good to go. 700$ motorcycle, expect to have to put some work into it.
