Old Town Road to EGOT

Blame Game is much better on the album than the minute or two long preview I heard of it a few weeks ago on YouTube. That's to be expected, but still. When I heard that the song sampled Aphex Twin and featured John Legend, I had high hopes for it. Then that preview didn't sound great, but this is totally restoring my faith in it.

edit: Woah, Lost In The World is blowing me away too. drat. Every track on this album is massive.

I'm going to sound like a 15 year old girl but oh well. Just finished all the way through and I've never been blown away like this from a first listen in my 25 years of life. I really felt leading up to this it was going to be "that" album of our generation, our Thriller (oh my god a Michael comparison!) something that will endure and have us as excited to hear it when we're in our forties and our kids flick passed it on the radio in our space cars because by then we'll be living like the Fifth Element right? Seriously though, I do not like Nicki Minaj or Rick Ross and they sounded amazing on this, everyone sounds so elevated, Jay killed his verses, he sounded so dialed in. Everything about this is impressive.

I've seen a lot of you mention emotion and I'm glad to see this, rap often gets looked down on for not having emotion and just being materialistic or about embracing society's ills. I think this album really makes you feel different things and I hope the haters will just listen instead of pre judge it. Thank you Mr. West! I haven't purchased an album in awhile, but I am buying this baby and dusting off my cd rack so it can proudly sit on display.

Totally agree with you here. It's so easy to write that cliche love gone wrong song you inevitably skip after one listen, but this song is so emotional and wonderfully produced.

I really like all the songs but Power is my favorite. I don't like skits but that Chris Rock bit is at the end so it will be easy to just skip to the next song. Did people really say Kanye was racist after what happened at the VMA's? I didn't see it at all as something racial.

forget about ur worries and ur strife
This is absolutely the best album of the year, and that's coming from someone who's been championing LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire as the previous winners in my mind. The album's gigantic. Every track's incredibly well-done. The All of the Lights string into is beautiful. The 9-minute-long Runaway with the beats and vocoder ending? One of Kanye's best works that overcomes a mediocre point of origin. He even separated Lost In The World and Who Will Survive In America.

I'm buying a copy for myself on November 22nd, then three or four more for various friends' Christmas presents. I kind of want to just hand Kanye a hundred bucks and thank him for his work.

I couldn't wait so I'm listening to it right now and it's amazing so far. It's so strange listening to the original Power version and not the remix because I liked the remix so much. I noticed that these songs have different track times compared to the GOOD Fridays versions:

So Appalled
Monster
Devil in a New Dress (album version has 2 extra minutes)

Other than the obvious 2 extra minutes in Devil in a New Dress, what else is different between the versions?

I can tell you So Appalled has very distinct differences in the transitions between verses. Most notable is the fact that he put a Swizz Beatz section in between Pusha T and CyHi

It's crazy that Kanye is releasing this album right when former President George "Iraq II" Bush feels within himself some strange compulsion to mention him by name in an interview structured around the idea of "The most important moments of my Presidency."

This is some Frost/Nixon poo poo.

I think it would be easy to get carried away with the production, arty, perfection side of the album (not that they aren't amazing) and miss the fact that there are so many quotables in there.

It's the whole package.

It's a solid album. I'm not getting anything close to an "album of the decade" vibe. Honestly, I can't even say "album of the year" (remember, Erykah Badu, Broken Bells, and The Walkmen released spectacular albums this year). Still it's a drat good album.

EDIT: With that said, "Runaway" is probably record of the year. It still blows me away.

The album is very musically interesting and impressive, but after watching that today show interview, reading his tweets, and really sitting down and analyzing his lyrics it he really comes across as someone who is not firing on all cylinders. When Jay-Z raps you can tell he's coming from a position of intelligence which really adds depth to his tracks. Kayne's stuff feels a little surface level.

Are you talking about Kanye's lyrical content? If so, I guess I agree to some extent but musically this album is an artistic achievement beyond any of his other albums IMO which makes up for some lackluster lyrics.

Pillbug
All I know is that this album is ridiculously addictive. If this is him releasing something not firing on all cylinders, then the day that happens he'll be releasing something exceptionally special.

Granted I don't know too much about hip hop or rap to an extent where I can really deconstruct the rhymes or flow compared to ya know, the history of the genre or even the common opinion (though to my ears, it sounds fantastic). But musically, it's a beautifully produced piece of work. Everything really comes together well and there aren't any weak songs on here.

I unno, this album and even that Runaway short have made me really appreciate kanye as an artist a lot more than I did before. It's nice to see him try some new things and express himself in these ways. You don't always see artists take many chances, so I dig it. It all feels pretty honest too.

My theory is that Kanye thinks he's the greatest thing ever, so he's not afraid to try something new or ambitious because he doesn't think he could possibly fail.

Kanye's said every song on there has gone through hundreds of rewrites and it definitely shows up in the quality of the lyrics. I would agree that on his previous albums his bars often sounded like they were written around a concept and a couple hot couplets, but this time the effort really shines through. All the songs where he has extended verses (Gorgeous, Hell Of a Life, Blame Game) feel a lot sharper in composition and flow than his earlier outings. Jay's verses were still standouts though, as was CyHi Da Prynce's surprisingly enough.

I was expecting a disappointment but all around this album owns. Except Lost In The World, still not feeling that even though it's a buoyant outro. Love the pacing too, it's almost so good sequentially that it's hard to listen to the individual tracks out of order.
