Here's something exciting for you animation fans: Disney is due to release Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind as a Blu-ray+DVD Combo on 3/8/11 (SRP $39.99)! Extras on the Blu-ray will include The World of Ghibli, Creating Nausicaa, Enter the Lands, a Studio Ghibli Trivia Challenge and the original Japanese storyboards, while the included DVD will likely be the same disc as released previously by the studio.

$40 seems like a lot for one flick, even if it is a Studio Ghibli.

I'm afraid of how much they're going to ask for Mononoke, even though I'm going to pay whatever it is.

That's just the SRP. You'll probably be able to pick it up for about $25

The Japanese screencaps I've seen of Nausicaa are really good. I just hope that we don't get the UK version. It seems like they got rid of almost all the grain.

Best Buy and most other brick and mortar shops will never carry a Ghibli release (none of them carry Criterions), so they'll be at full price at Barnes & Noble. If I reserve them, MovieStop will have them at a reasonable price.

Although, I guess Amazon is an option.

I don't know what Best Buy you are shopping at, but my local store carries Criterions. Maybe it's a specialized market thing.

Also, Ghibli titles are being released through Disney - so there's a pretty good chance it ends up at retailers. When the DVDs of Porco Rosso, The Cat Returns, and Nausicaa came out in 2005, they were definitely in stores.

Although you should almost always buy online for the cheapest price.

I remember Ponyo got a decent release, because it actually went into theaters.

For about 6 months, Target carried DVDs of all the old Ghibli films (Porco Rosso, Nausicaa, etc.), although I don't know what the occasion was - but then they were gone.

Subtract an additional $10 for the Disney Fantasia coupon and $8 for the Sorcerer's Apprentice coupon (not yet available) and you will get both for $29.98 + tax. Not a bad deal at all.

Can't imagine it getting much better. It's already the unrated version with loseless sound and good picture quality.

It is rumored that Warner Bros is getting Lolita and Barry Lyndon ready for a new Kubrick boxset in 2011 (along with individual release). If you own none of his WB movies and would rather get a boxset, you may want to wait.
