A little update to this, changing the fonts back to DroidSans fixes it, changing them to helvetica again it does the same thing with all messages in Gmail being bold. What the hell. Nowhere else do I notice the wrong font. I forgot to mention in the last post, I'm using Type Fresh for this now.

You need two fonts to use, a Helvetica Regular font and a Helvetica Bold font. Are you doing this or are you using the same font for both?

Try setting your bold font to something different like Palatino Bold or something and see what happens.

Ok guys, I really need help:

All I'm trying to do is get ROM Manager working.

The Nexus is unlocked.
The Nexus is rooted.

Amon-RA recovery was flashed. I wanted to put clockwork recovery on it instead so it will play nice with ROM Manager. So I flashed clockwork recovery. Now I can't get into recovery. I think it's because two recovery images were flashed.

Where do I go from here?

I just deleted the version I downloaded from the market and installed the version from its website instead, and now it works fine. Not sure why that is, but I'm happy now

Yeah the stock EVO kernel only works with the experimental version. The dev sort of points this out in the description of the app on the market, but I imagine most of the population doesn't know if the EVO's kernel has netfilter enabled or not (I sure didn't).

I don't see any error there at all. You might want to send that to the dev and see if he can help you out.

Actually, I think I may have found the answer. How can I confirm if my Nexus One has the SLCD?

From here:

quote:

Using "blind" flash_image method works for locked bootloaders, requires root and is suitable for SLCD Nexus users that lost the ability to see their screen. Adapted from here.

Do you think I should try this? Because that's what I think is happening. The buttons are lighting up but the screen is not working it seems. The power button turns the button LEDs off and on, but the screen stays dark.

I dunno if you can confirm it except by when it was bought.

You can give it a shot, yeah. I dunno if CWM supports SLCD N1s yet.

So I just got the EVO and I'm way to scared to root it. How should I go about doing it? Would my EVO work? UnrEVOked says it won't on newer EVO's. Oh man what should I do.

All right, so I finally got the OTA update installed using these instructions: http://solo.dc3.com/dinc/ thanks to a website that has all the default Incredible .apks for download. Now I'm on step 13:

quote:

13. Copy ClockWork Recovery 2.5.0.5 (PB31IMG).zip to just plain PB31IMG.ZIP on the SD root.

14. (Re)boot into HBOOT and let it apply that (vol-up). It's really fast.

I've done this both with it named PB31IMG.zip and PB31IMG.ZIP. Either way, HBOOT doesn't notice it and just says "no image" in that ultra-quick status screen.

I thought it might be because 2.5.0.5 was the version I already had, but I can't get into Recovery: I just get the Incredible with the red triangle/exclamation icon, and I have to pull the battery. What the hell could I be doing wrong here?

Yet another problem has arose with this Nexus One. I just want to get Wireless Tether to work. So far I have tried the "pre" (experimental) version, and the older versions. The computer sees it, connects to it, but it just won't go to a website... Running 2.2.

For rooted DInc users - the most recent version of Virtuous ROM is the stock Incredible Sense with the new OTA update baked in. Worked like a charm for me, and avoided all the trouble of trying to get the OTA to install on it's own.

Formatting my memory card for use with Apps2sd+, using ROM manager. Asks me how big my swap is supposed to be, what's swap good for and how much shall I choose?

The stock kernel v4 has some amazing battery life too, the best I've seen.

Choose 0 if you've got a relatively current phone, it's only used for phones like the G1/Magic that don't have much RAM :)

It's built into the OS, why would you try to use a seperate app for it?

Because it now costs money to use this on T-Mobile.

Is it something they'll add to your plan automatically or something? Because it's still been working fine for me without paying.

Apparently T-Mobile started blocking (non-paid) tetheirng as early as the 15th. There's basically a thread about it for every T-Mobile device on XDA.

Looks at this point they're blocking based on HTTP user-agent strings, at least. You can try changing the user-agent string on your laptop/whatever as a workaround. Not certain exactly which ones work, but won't give you mobile versions of sites.

So MIUI now has a themeing system which allows you to replace the picture in any apk on the system as well as icons. Pretty spiffy imo.

How can you find out how much free space your apps2sd partition has?

So looking into this unrEVOked thing, it looks like I could probably do the root thing just fine. If it matters my hboot is 2.02 and my build number is 3.30.651.3 (this is the part that worried me, since my friend said that a EVO with the hardware version of 0004 and that build number won't be able to be rooted).

I mean he could be wrong, but I just want to know if that's an issue or not. If so I'll just run all the unrevoked stuff and install those drivers.

How long until someone figures out an app-based work around for rooted phones? I'm still able to tether, since I'm apparently under the tethered data cap after which the error appears, but losing free and simple tethering would be a major blow to my t-mobile loyalty. As a free service, it's excellent; but if I have to pay for tethering, I'd go to a faster carrier.

Yeah the hboot 2.02 is a problem. There is a somewhat complicated workaround on xda here

From the rudimentary understanding of it that I have, without rooting I don't think I am missing anything outside of screenshots, removing stock apps and removing all the ads.

Are there any other customizing/benefits that I'm sorely going to lack on a Droid X without rooting and that I can't make happen with apps?

Tethering for free is why a lot root to start. Biggest thing is OS updates/optimizations for me. I'm on an HTC Hero, and the cyanogen ROM is much faster than the stock image. I don't much attention to DroidX, but I'd guess its in the same boat.

I know it's kind of the appeal of MIUI but is there any way to get rid of 1375 icons spread across 18 screens (not literally)? I've put them into folders but that's still pretty annoying. I'm used to the app drawer.

Install Launcher Pro or ADB and use it instead of the launcher with MIUI.

I'm not sure such a cap exists. What we know is that tether blocking started for some folks on the 15th and that, as of today, some folks are still unaffected. Which sounds more like a market-based rollout. Also, at least one person was affected by "tether blocking" for using Dolphin HD and not actually tethering, also suggesting there isn't a cap.

Dropping "unlimited data" from 10 GB to 5 GB and the removal of the EM+ plans from their website are also aggravating issues. But who cares about carrier loyalty? If T-Mobile still works for you and you have a great plan with them, why not?

Mein Eyes! posted:

Interesting idea! So the deal is that the work around for user-agent blacklisting is to change the user-agent string PC-side. However, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to do DPI and rewrite HTTP headers on the phone itself. Or if you didn't want to do that, just make the phone act as a transparent HTTP proxy that rewrites the user-agent that way. I'd love to see this packaged as an app to run on rooted phones so that you don't need a PC-side workaround. That would definitely be giving T-Mo the finger.

If you use Titanium Backup, the latest version (or maybe the last two versions) display the info as well.

poo poo, when did that happen? As for carrier loyalty, I assume the carriers do. I'd figured smaller carriers like T-Mobile trade perks for customers, since they have less to offer by way of speeds and coverage (in general). I guess that's a conversation for a different thread though.

I'll take comfort knowing that if a solution is possible in the way you described, or in some other way, then it shouldn't be long until someone puts it together.

The only two unmentioned things I can think of off the top of my head are Titanium Backup and changing the notification bar to non-white. And maybe some installation voodoo you need Root Explorer capabilities for?

ASK ME ABOUT HOW NOT BEING A FUCKING ASSHOLE ON THE ROAD IS JUST LIKE BEING A JEW AT A NAZI GATHERING BECAUSE I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND HOW TO NOT BE A FUCKING ASSHOLE AND WHEN PEOPLE TREAT ME LIKE I'M A FUCKING ASSHOLE THAT IS JUST LIKE GENOCIDE

So I bought a A855 motorola droid with the 2.2 upgrade already loaded onto it and I totally cheated by rooting the phone using http://souproot.wordpress.com/ and now I am trying to follow the directions from here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/1643218-Motorola-Droid-Full-Solution-Updated?pp=15to flash the phone to cricket using my preexisting account but I couldn't find the autostart.sh file at Whiterabbit.org like the guide suggests. I have a hojillion questions starting with:

1. Is the guide I am looking at worth anything at all?

2. what does the autostart.sh file even do? From what I have read it has something to do with the list of programs you want to run when you boot the phone and its the file that the autorun app that I downloaded from the marketplace looks to when its doing its thing when the phone starts up

3.) Is Over the air service programing (OTASP) a better way to change the phone over to the cricket network? It seems like it might be easier but I hardly feel qualified to make any judgments about this cell phone voodoo. I was lucky enough to stumble onto that rooting app for my phone with a little google fu but I am already lost.

I have DL'd everything else that the above guide suggested as well as all of the recommended apps in the OP. I hope that Root app buys me some leeway with the rest of my slightly off topic post...

Since this hasn't come up in here yet: Sprint's latest Evo software (which seems to have been shipping on most Evos since early November) is a BITCH to root. I was pretty sure I'd bricked my wife's new phone last night :v:

This guide is the way to go if you have one.
