The majority of the others were ... Meh. But she liked them, so I'm not going to argue. Alas, I couldn't find a way to convey "Breast cancer" so the shoot degenerated into finding awesome textures and playing them off against the models. It's really interesting being able to cut out a slice of person with a pattern. You also get to do bodypaint without any of the mess.. and it's transient which is awesome. Plus, being as it's now stepped out of the realm of being a photograph, you can just fart around and make ART. In all honesty though, I'm not happy at all looking at the photos now, I think I may do a reshoot at some point. For those interested, you need a REALLY fast lens or high ISO to get anything using a projector as a lightsource. It also flattens certain details, but this is a bonus when you have a model who's worried about the appearence of her skin or blemishes. Focus is also virtually impossible, it appears that your cameras sensor is easily confused by the projected image, hunting within the projected image for a spot to lock on to. Using a black backdrop is a godsend too, the light falls off to near nothing if you have a lighter subject in front of it. It's remarkable how different the end result is given what you see initially.

We needed photos taken for profile pictures for Office 2010 at work. Quick and dirty as gently caress. The background is the back of a door in a meeting room. Natural light from a window from the front, fluorescent lights above and I bounced a flash off a whiteboard on the wall to my right. I was pretty pleased with how they turned out considering. We usually have to wear business shirts, but we have casual Fridays and that's when I had my camera in the office. So yes, of course it's IT.

I like her though, she can do fashion, being skinny and tall with good cheekbones and straight hair. I don't love either of the shots - first one's crooked and too distant, the second one is a weird mix of a face that's very open to the camera with a body that's completely turned away, closed and crossed. I'd like to see a different crop of the first one - maybe a square crop from where the tabletop begins up to a few feet over her head?

I came across this and wanted to share: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/11/07/sports/20101107-nyc-marathon-faces.html?hp 99 portraits of runners that just finished the NY marathon. There's some pretty cool stuff in there, and the expressions are great.

This is why you shoot in RAW! I accidentally bumped my aperture to nearly wide open using a fixed lighting setup and completely blew out the image. Thought it was a ruined shot, but didn't anticipate getting so much detail out. in full view it's awesome witnessing areas of total white turning into skin and shadows.

Yessir I did, got a heap of shots actually, this one I worked more out of curiosity than anything else. The amount of detail stored in a raw file astounds me, it really really does.

As a matter of interest, the line cutting through her leg is completely distracting me. All I can see is blackwhiteblack horizontal liiiine. Plus the plugpoint. The model is awesome though, she could definitely work stronger poses. Oh gods, and the spraypainted line at her rear end level... Cannot unthink cockandballs thoughts now! Then again, that may just be me..

The vignette is waaaaaay over the top on that first one and I'm not a fan of the colour tones in either one sorry guy :/ The crop on the first shot feels awkward and you've cut her feet off on the second one. That being said, feel free to rip into me, I did a portrait/maternity shoot on Sunday. Odd as this sounds, the clothes on the woman are too flattering. She barely looks pregnant so it comes off more like an engagement shoot.

Great exposure and composition, but the way her head rests on his shoulder looks uncomfortable and unnatural. The last one of two of them looking back is fantastic. And I don't understand why you cut their heads off in that middle one.

Okay, I know you're outside but try to get her face exposed well, I know the bottom left hand side of her dress will be over exposed, but right now she looks just off. This washed out feeling continues through the images, I'm not sure whether it's your fault for not coulor balancing correctly or whether that yellow top she's wearing is just not good for her. Either way I'd suggest vamping the saturation a bit, or something. It's difficult to know what you should do without having Photoshop here, sorry. Oh, and I'm sure you know but I'll say it anyway, the face-exposed-but-everthing-else-is-overexposed is very 'in'. I'm not saying you should do it deliberately, but at least for those photos where you are worried about it, don't. Because customers can love it. This is nice, well exposed etc., except you only just got her foot in the frame. Also, it feels too bright yellow to me, maybe bump the oranges. This is to make the photo more pleasing not more accurate. (Feel free to ignore that if that's the direction you intend to keep heading in terms of style). PLEASE clone out that patch of missing grass round the tree :P I realise that the top half of her is meant to be underexposed and the belly correctly exposed, I just think that she needs to step forward to get more of the belly into the light. At the moment I don't think the effect is as obvious as it needs to be to make the photo stunning. Great idea, just a little poorly executed. [/quote] I don't know if you've read the style guide at the start of this thread but that is an unattractive pose for a lady, all those wrinkles in her neck (in this case I don't think it matters so much since she seems natural enough). In this I feel the faces aren't close enough OR the shot isn't wide enough. For couple shots the blank space needs to make the two people seem like a whole thing. At the moment there is the same amount of blank space between them as there is between them and the edge of the frame. Also, maybe this is just me, but I keep feeling like half of the woman's face is out of focus? Anyway, these suggestions are as a person who looks at a lot of photos about weddings/engagements etc. Feel free to dismiss them if they aren't your 'style'. But I feel like they all need a bit of a nudge a bit towards the red because they feel washed out due to the shirt and the very green surroundings. Just test strips. I didn't like how the sand was so close to her skin tone. This was at the Sand Dunes in San Louis Obispo. Obviously Weston was able to do just fine with the subject matter, but I just didn't care for the setting when it comes to how I like to print. Oh well, I got good stuff at the other locations we hit up on the trip.

dunkman posted:I'm doing an actual business headshot thing for a friend of mine as a favor in my studio. For posing I generally bring along a book of poses so if the subject has an idea of the type of shot they want they can point to it rather than give me some vague idea. Wireless triggers are amazingly useful when you have subjects that tense up every time you get behind the camera. You can frame the shot on a tripod and take the shot as soon as they look/feel natural without them feeling the need to pose.
