I just don't do a lot of talking to the public or management type stuff in my current job, that's going to count against me. Biographic Info was my highest score. I treated this part of the exam as I treat all applications to the Federal Govt., I picked the highest possible score I could for each question. I barely have any work experience (grocery store, Census, intern at non-profit) but I could feasibly justify picking the best answer for each question. You just have to think outside the box when trying to come up ways that your experience could fit the questions. Obviously I couldn't do the same for the Biographic questions that require you to type in answers but those were only like 1/3 of the questions in the section and I was still able to pick the best answer for most of those.

So I sent in my application for the summer internship program last night. Lets hope I didn't gently caress it up! I think I should more than enough work and international experience for them, and my Undergrad grades are excellent. But the written sections of the application was very vague, and I don't think I wrote well. But lets hope I'll be in Japan/Singapore/Korea/China by June!

I applied for a Information Management Specialist back in February and it's been stuck in "Eligible – Application Referred to Selecting Official" since then. I'm not really sure what to expect or what this means but it seems like a rather long to be stuck in limbo. Also, just applied to take the FSOT which will occur sometime in Jan/Feb.

Good luck with that; I was a Boren scholar (Thai) with almost 3 years of undergrad overseas, was only good enough to make alternate for Bangkok. That was my second try, the first time I didn't even make alt.

You're given some time to write a short essay on some vaugely IT related topic just so they get an idea of your ability to string words together. Then you're interviewed by a two person team. One is a generalist who conducts a more or less generic job interview with some basic questions about government and conducting yourself overseas thrown in. The other is an IMer who asks some basic IT questions.

So I'm studying secondary education but I've always wanted to do Foreign Service. After I graduate I'll pursue a Masters (in something) but right now I'd like to do something other than teaching all of my life. Do you guys have any suggestions for a course of action in the future? Although I'm studying Spanish, I'd love the chance to take another foreign language as well. I consider my self fairly smart but if I had to fill out a biography it would be completely mediocre and middle of the road. My biggest concern is the prospect of not having a job for a long time. I'd love to supplement that with teaching but I have no idea what the contractual commitment will be if I do get a teaching job. Any help? I'm 20 and since summer internship applications are closed for 2011, I believe I'll be too old for the next go around? How about a summer clerical position? Does that help with future employment in the Foreign Service? Cjones fucked around with this message at 20:07 on Nov 11, 2010 |

I'm taking the FSOT in February. I'll likely select the econ track but politics has always been more interesting to me. Is it possible to jump ship a few years into a track without totally wrecking your job prospects?

Well, it is a lot easier to move from political to economic than the other way around, but it is best to not count on being able to switch. It does happen, but it is mighty tough (and not the best thing for one's career advancement).

Edit: At my post, as a specialist, I'm getting into Econ reporting with the blessing of the section chief and Front Office. I have to make time for it, and my boss is on-board as long as I get my usual work projects accomplished, but that's the beauty of small posts. The Econ Off does a fair amount of Pol work just by nature of it being a small section. At larger Posts this doesn't necessarily hold true. I got called for the Diplomatic Security Service test/interview today, scheduled for January. I peg my chances at somewhere between slim and none with no prior military/law enforcement experience, but I'd like to get the job and it certainly doesn't hurt to try. Any have any tips/pointers or general info?

Several were hired basically right out of school. So they had an interest in law enforcement and I believe they also had a degree that was law enforcement focused. First tour is is almost always domestic. DS has offices in big cities from LA and San Fran to NY and DC with points in between. Each oversees post has one to several DS agents assigned, so the opporunity to work oversees is available ... just takes a couple of assignements to get there. Hope this helps ... and good luck

From what I understand, if you are a DSS special agent, you will be going overseas. And you'll be doing it soon, and very frequently. Your first assignment will be domestic, probably DC, but you're going to get sent all over the place. Apparently its not uncommon for people on "domestic" tours to spend the majority of their time overseas. Here's a very long thread with lots of information (also with lots of people repeating the same questions and getting the same information, but if you're serious about the job it wouldn't hurt to read through the whole thing). http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?55598-bureau-of-diplomatic-security-opening

There's not going to be a massive unveiling of scandal and wrongdoing. All it really does is expose the private thoughts and assessments of American diplomats that are private for a legitimate reason.
