The current Blu is good but I could see it getting a significant upgrade. I'd love to get a commentary track, though it'd be hard to beat Garrett Brown's on The Shining.

SpaceAceJase posted:Any word on a TRON Blu-Ray release? I would have loved to rewatch the original with my girlfriend before seeing the new one. Disney is completely ignoring the existence of the original TRON until after Legacy makes them money. They showed it at one of their parks, and people were laughing at it. So they're afraid that it will make people not want to see the new movie. I read somewhere that they do have a new HD transfer for it, but it won't be out until 2011.

Captain Charisma posted:I guess at $6 it might be a non-issue but wasn't the Time Bandits disc a disappointment "Disappointingly, Time Bandits makes its U.S. debut on Blu-ray with an interlaced 1080i/AVC- encoded transfer that looks as though it may have been recycled from some HDTV broadcast master. (Although I can't say for sure.) If you have a large screen and/or you look closely, you'll definitely notice frequent macroblocking in the backgrounds and you'll spot a good deal of compression noise and other artifacts throughout. The print also features a moderate amount of flecks and scratches. Despite these problems, though, Time Bandits looks okay, and may even be the most subjectively eye-pleasing of the four HandMade titles that Image is releasing on the 24th, if only because the film had a bigger budget than Mona Lisa, The Long Good Friday, or Withnail and I. The transfer is persistently soft, but there's a clear upgrade from prior DVD editions and fine detail borders on better than merely acceptable at times. Color too sees an improvement, with a more balanced look overall, strong primaries, and even-keeled skin tones. Black levels, however, are a bit hazy and inconsistent. The film was released on Blu-ray by Optimum in U.K., and while I haven't personally seen that version, it features a much higher bit-rate, for what it's worth, is in 1080p, and sits on a dual-layer disc. A pity Image Entertainment couldn't have procured that transfer for the U.S. release." But hey, it's $6

That was far away enough for me to jump in on this deal now. Also, the Return of the King comes with a free video on demand rental of the movie. Not sure why I would watch a streaming version of the movie rather than just wait for the blu-ray one to come in the mail though.

The first two are kiddie bullshit, but worth owning just for completion's sake. The third, fifth and sixth films are marvelous (and quite sumptuous on Blu-Ray in terms of audio/video/supplements). I would recommend the Ultimate Editions over the regular version nine times out of ten, but since you're completely uninitiated with the series and it's a lot cheaper/more convenient to buy the box set, this would be the one time out of ten where it's okay. $6.66 per movie is a drat good deal, too. The fourth one also has an awesome P-i-P track that was on the HD-DVD, but not the regular Blu-Ray.

Does anyone use Blockbuster online having previously used Netflix? How do they compare for blu-ray? I'm getting sick and loving tired of Netflix jacking their prices up and failing to deliver content. It's bad enough my 3 disc unlimited plan costs me over 20 bucks to have the option for blu-ray rentals on it, but between that going up another 3 dollars to subsidize the streaming-only subscriptions and the fact they've pretty much stopped stocking any new catalog titles on blu-ray (such as Alien Anthology, Back to the Future, Metropolis, Psycho, and others high profile titles that aren't considered "new releases") I've absolutely had it. Is switching to Blockbuster a good idea, or am I going to find similar selection and prices there?
