COME DOWN AND EAT CHICKEN WITH ME, BEAUTIFUL. IT'S SOOOOOOOOOO DARK
to be fair, the new MIA album was pretty bad. It is kind of strange to me though that Pitchfork would give a 10.0 to such an inevitably mainstream (note: mainstream meaning "mainstream-level sales figures") record. I don't doubt it deserves the rating, though.

I think the Pitchfork review ignores the fact that on some level, you kind of have to be interested in Kanye on some level to take certain things out of this album. A looooot of material on this album is central to him and his life and there's not a lot of universal themes that every single person can relate to - I love the album but you have to admit that that is true on some level.

Not arguing that I don't think it's great, but in addition to what I said above: as someone off this site said, "I can't shake the feeling that most of these perfect scores are just the result of review sources trying to compete with and outdo each other rather than praise for the music itself"

When it comes to all pop music around today, I'd say Kanye earned that 10 out of 10. However, considering the wide ecletic range of music Pitchfork covers, I think Kanye's album is more deserving of something in the eight range. I mean, they clearly did this because everyone knows that Pitchfork giving 10s is unheard of, but I'm sure they're really thinking "Nah, there's more deserving records."

Then again, considering this album has the potential to become a new American classic, I suppose the 10 isn't -that- out there. We'll have to see.

And yeah, I was thoroughly disappointed by MIA's album. I was so excited after seeing the video for Born Free, only to be incredibly let down. Hopefully she gets over herself and actually produces something worth listening to next go-around.

I wonder if you put the other so called classic works, Sargent Pepper, Darkside of The Moon, Thriller etc, into nowadays settings, what the criticism would be like with everyone being so much more opinionated and whatnot. I bet you'd see that same radio station guy saying the Beatles "just didn't hit the mark." For reference I put "so called" because I don't care for the Beatles or Pink Floyd.

I don't really see why the Pitchfork score is that much of a surprise - they gave Late Registration a 9.5/10 and put all of Kanye's albums sans 808 & Heartbreaks on their top 100 albums of the last decade list. I would have been a lot more surprised if they reviewed the album badly considering that they had already heaped an incredible amount of praise on the third of the album that appeared as GOOD Friday tracks prior to the review.

I don't think this is true either. I've had minimal interest and knowledge at best in Kanye's previous albums / his media exploits, but this is easily my album of the year. Considering the general praise the album has been getting, if a site wanted to stand out it would be much easier to trash the album rather than being the 1000th outlet to give it a 9-10/10 or 4-5 / 5.

Dude, I like Fall Out Boy, last I checked they were pretty popular? What cool unheard of band or chart topping legend do I have to embrace to prove myself to you, internet king? I like Queen, I hear Freddie Mercury is popular with everyone. Did you know he's gay? Blew my mind. Still waiting for you to pick something I've actually said and you know, show me what's wrong? Also that Brett guy has a Kanye avatar, he's actually Jay-Z. This is all a Masonic conspiracy, Hov.

I really, really love Power, Runaway, and Lost in the World.

I loved Monster as a single but it feels jarring on the album, as does most of the middle part of the album. The dude doesn't need collaborations other than Jay-Z (we all need Jay-Z).

I'd kill to see an all-Kanye album close to this though.

1.) Of course you have to be interested in Kanye.. but anyone that hates hip-hop for any reason is a biased resource anyway and even then the production on this album should win some people over that generally don't like rapping. If you have any interest in pop culture whatsoever then Kanye should be incredibly appealing and "relatable" person.

The magic of this album deals with the influence that fame has on European/Western culture, which is something relatable to everyone that unconsciously eats it up and those that consciously confine themselves from it. Kanye is the epitomist of pop culture, and the most self-righteous voice that it has seen in a while, yet he reinsures this by producing his best piece of work that is not confined by traditional pop culture models placed on mainstream music, and wonderfully attacks and withholds the glorified level that he is, in all rights, living on.

The general theme of lost love and voyeurism is not exactly the most abstract ideas either. Yes, they are central to Kanye very outspoken life and universal audiences will not necessarily relate to dating porn stars etc. etc.. but I don't think that it is too far of an intellectual stretch to fantasize about this life and include yourself within this fantasy. That is the universal magic of this album. It influences the livers and the dreamers.. and I personally think it relates to a vast array of audiences: music-aholics, sex-aholics, fame-aholics, culture-aholics, love-aholics, alchoholics, drug-aholics, fashion-aholics, etc. etc..

Kanye contextualizes his life into a lived fantasy and he accepts that this life is obviously not normal, but more importantly he is self-aware enough to view it like an outside source, thus purposly naming it his fantasy. It is a concept album that is lived by those with or without fame and it breaks down the unnecessary barrier between those people with or without fame by proving that there are relatable themes that exist between every class.
