Which people said he was a prick that aren't in love with Surma? Because actual number of people calling him a prick so far as I can recall [And I admit I could be leaving some people out, so literally tell me if there was someone else. Comic has been going for awhile, things get forgotten] is 'two'. Her ex, and the crazy fox spirit that murdered a guy to get close to her. These are not unbiased reporters. I'm not even saying they are wrong, I'm just saying there are exactly two negative reports of his character, and they are both people that are [Not even were, still are] ridiculously, stupid in love with his wife. And there was Jones, but she was actively trying to get Annie mad so who knows how true that was? Also against him though is the fact he's not here, and we know that for the first two or so years of her time at the school he won't send word. Fair enough on that one. Beyond that though, we know nothing about him. We have one photo of him. We know more about characters in the past involved in getting Jeanne killed than we do him. Even as we get to a well grown Surma in the flashbacks, she is still going out with Eglamore. So far as we know, coming up on Renard going on his little foray into body stealing she's still seeing Eglamore. What happens between then, and deciding to leave and have a child with a character we've never been properly introduced to, is just a vast blank spot waiting to be filled. quote:No, it was on Surma's final wishes. The author's word on it is that Anthony didn't have an opinion on it. Yeah, but he did it. As in set it in motion and made it happen. Why, like many things, is just there. Disinterest in her fate, relief at having someone else deal with it, who knows. Why have a child you know would kill your wife? Why marry her at all? We know absolutely nothing about him, his relationship with Surma, or his relationship with his daughter before this. Making judgments about him seems to be jumping the gun slightly. Granted at best the picture seems to shaping up to be "Emotionally disconnected, not very good father". Or maybe he's just kind of sensitive and got wrecked by his wife dying. Or maybe he's sort of a monster. You can pretty much insert anything you want for his personality and motivation, because we know nothing about him.

I'm surprised that so many people are already biased against Anthony. We hardly know anything about him, except a few second-hand opinions. There are plenty of potential ways to redeem his behavior. Until his side of the story is told, we don't know the hardships he has faced. Off the top of my head: -Surma could have conned him into having Annie so the Court would have a new seer, and now he's totally alienated. -Maybe he's out scouring the wilderness looking for medicine to make sure Annie doesn't suffer the same fate as her mother. -Heck, maybe he's been kidnapped by the Court so they can manipulate Annie without his interference. -What if Annie also absorbs his "fire" and he had to cut off contact until he could solve the problem. He may not be a nice guy, but it may be presumptuous to believe he's a total rear end.

I don't really think we need to look at motivations or second hand opinions to decide a character who ditches his 12 year old daughter without any warning in the aftermath of her mother's death is a total rear end. Say he's got the best excuse in the god drat world. He could at least have given her a heads up so that she wouldn't be trying to contact him through his former place of employment or childhood friends.

Jones has said it at the very least, even if it was to try and piss Annie off so she could "assess her character." Coyote was startled when Annie was said to be Anthony's daughter, which isn't an outright critique but sure implies a few things. Kat also seems unhappy with the situation but has too much tact to say anything about it ("You haven't heard from him?" "No, nothing." "... Well, I'm not leaving you here alone again.") The thing is yeah there are plenty of possible explanations for why Anthony isn't there but we don't know what they are and the characters don't know what they are. How are the characters supposed to shrug this off and react to something that they don't and can't know? People do this in real life all the time, and not just people in love with someone who's already taken. I mean obviously there are plenty of reasons Anthony could justifiably be gone, but people don't care about that poo poo in real life, either. Deadbeat dads with good reasons for being away (has a second job, job relocated him, is on a business trip to somewhere else, etc.) are still rampantly criticized as deadbeat dads regardless of why they're gone.

If this were real life, it would be pretty fair to assume Anthony is a dickhead. But this is a story, and a good one. I doubt after all the buildup, he's going to come back and say "oh, sorry I didn't call, I didn't feel like it because I'm a giant dick." He's almost guaranteed to have a really good reason for not being there, we just don't know what it is yet.

My guess is that they didn't tell Annie where her father was because they didn't want her running off to find and/or help him only to get eaten by a dragon or something.
|
# ? Dec 3, 2010 00:35 |
I like the idea they literally just can not find him. Because if the Court is actively hiding his location, it turns them from "Generally well meaning with a dark history" to "total monsters".

I concur. From the start of the story, I have not trusted the Court. The fates of Jeanne and her lover, as well as the complicity of the Court in their deaths, implies something is wrong with the Court. I wouldn't be surprised if Anthony's absence is because the Court doesn't want him around Annie when she is young and impressionable. They may not want anyone interfering in the creation of a new seer, especially a father who doesn't fully respect the Court. For all we know, he's trying to rescue her and the Court is too powerful for him to get to her. Or maybe he's a real deadbeat and at Annie's two year mark, we'll find out.

Have we learned what Antimony's relationship with Anthony was like before she arrived at the Court? She must have some emotional connection other than "he is her dad and he exists" given that she takes offense at people badmouthing him, and she does kind of take on after his personality from what little we saw of him in that flashback chapter.

Building off what Dodgeball said, I'm sure Eglamore, Jones, et al, would do what they could to rescue Annie from any bad situation, but it wouldn't be an easy pass back to safety. And like Geekner said, it'll probably take a lot for Annie to want to use it now. Speaking of Jones, though, I was thinking about how little we know of her background. Was she around when Surma was at the Court? Does she know anything of the current situation, or is it a conspiracy of sorts between the Donlans and Eglamore (and who else?)?
