I'm wanting to learn to knit socks, once the holidays are over and I get over knitting and crocheting furiously for the past month. I've been knitting for about 2 years or so, and feel ready to tackle them. Socks just seems complicated to me for some reason. Anyone have any suggestions for a good book or a good place online to learn the basics?

I used Silver's Sock Class (free, online pattern) and found it really easy. She goes step-by-step and it's really simple to follow along. I did my first pair worsted on bigger needles and that helped me too.

XinicaThose are such pretty jackets ! About how big are they (child or adult)?

Ma_NiC, like poster above me, a lot of people find it easier to try it out on bigger yarn and needles. I'd recommend it too, unless you're really used to little yarn on little needles (I knit a lot of lace before I started doing socks).

Sorry for a super old finished thing, but this was my very first intarsia, and I'm really proud of it. I didn't get pictures before it had to be sent, and (two years later!) the giftee finally took some photos!

This is an improvised blanket knit out KnitPicks Suri Dream (which so cozy mmmm, I made a scarf with the leftovers). I used huge needles, size 15, and managed to get it done in two weeks by just knitting on it every second I had free. What a miserable summer that was!

I'll have to post pictures later, but the grab bag has more eyelash yarn than I will ever use. Somehow, though, I don't hate it. There's also some shiny yarn and some pretty spool of a jumbly white maybe sport? weight yarn. It's not a bad grab bag, it's just surprising. Now to figure out what in the world to do with fire orange/yellow eyelash yarn!

Ok my knittas I need some math help here. I'm knitting the Zag hat, but I need to size it up for the average male head (average circumference seems to be around 22-23 inches). Therefore, I want to add another repeat to the main pattern, which is 80 sts. Disregarding the initial CO requirement of the pattern (I'm adding a different brim) am I right to think the base pattern is 4 sts? I should CO 84 or 88 right?

TIA for your help, I'm JUST NOW starting my xmas knitting, though thankfully I only have two projects, which are both doable within my slightly extended xmas timeframe. :)

It looks more like 8 to me, 4 for the cable-y looking part, and 4 in plain stockingette to separate it from the next cable-y part. If you only want to size it up by one inch or so, why don't you try going up a needle size or using heavy worsted or aran instead of regular worsted?

By the way, most of the men I know wear 21" hats.

I've already bought the yarn so I'm pretty locked in, at least in that respect. :P Google told me 22-23, but I suppose I'll just start the pattern as-is, and eyeball it once I've got it started a bit. Thanks for your help! :)

Hee hee it's a very wooly christmas to me. I just got my first gift, a set of size 11 needles, to go with the chunky polarknit wool that my fiance wants me to make him a scarf out of. And 3 balls(Skeins?) of the wool in three shades of blue because thats what he liked.

Also 2 books, First Knits and Knitting 24/7.

I am trying to learn to knit, but I really need a class. I've a very hands on learner and learn best with a "no no let me help you learn" kind of teacher. 22 days till my first class starts!

Hi knitting goons! I have a random question: basically, I got this mystery yarn from a thrift store and need to know what fiber it is. There were no labels of any kind, although in the same big bag of yarn were some "Lady Galt" which according to Google was a wool/nylon blend and in my opinion they have a similar feel. I tried rubbing a few strands with wet fingers and they didn't felt. What else can I do to find out?

We got the cutest little ornament kits at work last week, and I decided to make one for my boyfriend's family's tree.

Too bad they're on tiny needles and take like 5 hours to knit. I kinda want to do more of them, though!

This is the Dipped Infinity Scarf by Lauren Chau. You pick 8 colors of sock yarn and knit using two strands together, dropping one color and joining a new one every two pattern repeats to get an ombre effect. It was fairly mindless but picking out the color gradient was fun.

Skinny Skid by Stephen West. The brim is double knit so there's a little pocket (my friend wants one to store joints in). The design was tricky to get the hang of and it being sock yarn, took a while, but it's pretty ingenious. My boyfriend has request the same colors in the beanie version.

Is it a little sad that I'm moving soon and will probably have to dedicate a whole trunk to my yarn?

Thanks! I wish I could take credit for the colors of the hat - I was so indecisive that I had to drag my coworker and a regular knit night girl all over the store hemming and hawing. The blue is Juniper by Alchemy - the color is called Secret Agent Blues. The brown is Koigu KPM in taupe. My coworker is doing the same hat with the same color of Juniper, but a really rich brown in Malabrigo Sock that I think will look gorgeous with her coloring.

That one? It's the only place I can really find it online and the colors in your picture don't seem to mesh with the ones in this, but I can't tell if it's just me or what. Or if there's somewhere else I can get it - from the looks of it, Alchemy doesn't even have Juniper on their own webstore, so!

Make a liner for it, that way it blocks the wool AND makes it warmer.

Do give them a soak, see if that does it. Some yarns are terrible until washed, at which point they soften up immensely.

Also, check your hands for rashes. You may have a wool allergy :( Do you own anything else wool that bugs you, or is it just these mittens?

Jesus, I was all finished on Saturday, then on Sunday I (had a mental breakdown and) decided I would make a pullover for my brother. WTF is wrong with me? Actually, I have the body done already, working on the first sleeve now - he's getting a boring stockingette sweater due to time constraints, but at least it's got some stripes for interest. My list:
1. Mom's cardigan--finish second front, do second sleeve, do scarf attachment, block all of it, sew it all together, buttonbands, add buttons.
2. Socks for best friend. 1/4 done.
3. Socks for boyfriend (i seem to think I can do two pairs for him???) cuff of one sock done.
4. a nice hat for myself out of a 50/50 alpaca/silk blend.

I still have 1/2 of a large baby blanket to finish by the middle of January, and I put it on hold to do Christmas gifts since I was sick of it. I've finished three hats, almost done this scarf for my bro's g/f that goes with a hat I did, his stuffed penguin which thankfully I found out yesterday can be put off until mid Jan when he's home, and my grandmother oohed and ahhed over the hat, so now I'm making her a black one for Christmas and I'm hoping to have it done BEFORE I go over that morning, or she can watch me finish it while I'm there. Then what did I do today? Bought more yarn to make a felted needle roll to hold my DPNs and few straights I have...gently caress! I'm too ambitious.
