Topped off all my fluids today in my monthly maintenance routine. There's a large puddle of coolant on the ground now. Looks like there's a massive leak from the radiator.

And yet, I've decided that I will not sell her. I was planning on buying a new car in May and getting rid of my Escort and Jeep but I've decided that since the Jeep is paid for and costs nothing to insure I'm just going to keep it as my winter car.

Fuck that shit
One more brake question.

The Haynes manual is saying that the drums on the back are 10. Not 9 in diameter. I remember reading that the smooth drums are 9, and the ribbed ones are 10.

Is there truth to this?

How can I be sure what size i'm supposed to pick up? I really dont trust the little computer that the tards at the store get their info from.

Yeah, we've had ours for over three years and even counting the new engine it had put in it it's cost us under $6k from purchase price to today, including gas.

Tomorrow, I'm sure, that will increase.

Yes the 10" drums have cooling fins. You can measure the inner diameter of the drum too.

I think the 8.25 rear ends get 9 inch drums and Dana rear ends come with 10 inch rear drums.

ALl the Chrysler disk brakes I have worked on have been really easy to put back together because of the little springs that hold the pads in place in the calipers when you put everything together. I have never seen any other cars with pad retainers like Chryslers seem to always have.

So I'm still looking into replacing my TJ with another Jeep, and recently I have begun to appreciate the ZJ a lot more after looking at some mild builds.. The only issue is that I specifically want a 4.0 and as few other options as possible, and now I'm even starting to get picky about color - a red ZJ with the plastic side panels removed is gorgeous. Unfortunately most that I find seem to be option loaded with a V8.

Anyone that have both a ZJ and XJ what do you prefer and why? How has the 42RLE been? Is the coil rear really that much smoother than the leaf sprung XJ? This will be a DD with occasional light wheeling - I plan to have about 3-4" lift to run 30-31" tires.

I still don't know if I care for the WJ, I think it looks too vannish, even when lifted - way too curvy. ZJ has that classic boxy look that I like.

I had a whole lot more options for used vehicles before I got hooked on the 4.0.

Yeah and this is the photo that totally sold me on ZJ:

I lust for red XJs with 3" lift. No tint makes it look the part

Question is how tall are to doors on an XJ compared to say an XCV70 wagon?

Those wheels hurt my brain on both, but the body shape and lifts are just right.

How does compressing the caliper blow fluid out of the master cylinder? Are you people topping off your brake fluid when your pads wear thin? :psyduck:

People?? What are you trying to say there bud? :colbert:

Yes I always top off my brake fluid to the correct level. Can't say that I've ever spilled it while compressing the calipers back in, though. I don't break the bleeder screw open when compressing the calipers in either.

Don't close. Don't close.

Nap Ghost
If you top off, the float in the reservoir doesn't fall to let you know your pads are worn. But then again, I imagine pads usually last longer than your fluid should be in the car anyway. I bleed brakes a lot and there is no way to maintain the same level then.

Anyone had the 4wd Part Time dash indicator light go out on their XJ? On my 1996 it used to light up relaibly, but now only does occasionally (4wd Part Time is definitely engaging). Since it didn't just flat-out stop working one day, I'm thinking it's the switch in the transfer case, so I'm going to crawl under later and make sure the connection's good. I just had the dash bezel off yesterday to install Sirius, so I hope it's not the bulb.

I've had XJs I've worked on where either the plug disconnected on the transfer case or the bulb has burned out

In my '95 XJ, I found cutting a small notch on one side of the bezel at the steering column helps make things way a bit easier. If you do it right, the 2 piece cover that goes over the steering column covers it almost entirely.

I think mine got hung up on a hex-head screw/bolt on the back left side of the column (holds in the switch for the turn signal from the looks of things), so I cut the notch to clear that on a straight pull towards me.

I usually put a crack right over the center of the steering column so that I can slightly flex the dash cover to get it off easier

I just take the column surround off and unplug the multifunction switch, dash cover comes right out then. It is a pita to remove though, what was chrysler thinking.

If it looks like its made to be easily repaired, people would probably thing its made to break, or cheap. I would like it if my car were built like the CJ, nothing takes more than 10 minutes to figure out how to get it off. In actual removal time however thats like 5 hours after dealing with rust.

I would try the bulb or make sure the instrument panel has a good connection. On my XJ and other 97+ ones I think there was an issue with corrosion on the instrument panel connector which can cause flakey instrument behavior.

So I bought the new radiator today, this is another job I've never tackled before but so far I haven't made the Jeep undrivable with my lack of know-how. Can anyone point me towards a step-by-step radiator replacement guide for an XJ? I assume it's pretty much
1.) drain radiator,
2.) undo hoses and bolts,
3.) pull out old radiator,
4.) put new radiator in place,
5.) reattach hoses and bolts,
6.) fill with fluid,
7.) profit.

But specific instructions with pictures would be nice. I have the whole weekend off so I'm planning on tearing into this on Friday afternoon and I then have til Monday afternoon to get it done.

Hey all, quick question. I've been casually shopping for a WJ Grand Cherokee for the past couple of months but I really don't know anything about their reliability. I would like some basic tips for shopping that particular model of Jeep. Should I even be considering 100K+ mile examples? Any specific things I should keep my eyes peeled for? Any help would be appreciated.

Do you guys who don't daily drive your Jeep ever think about selling it?

I live in Northern Virginia and there is almost nowhere to go wheeling that isnt a two hour drive and it is pretty miserable to drive to work or anywhere else on an everyday basis in the Jeep so I just drive my other car. I am starting to get tempted to sell it since it just sits in front of my house for 29 days out of every month.

Do ATV or snowmobile guys sell their vehicles because they only get used a few times a year ? I'd suggest thinking about trading it in for a Cherokee with a bit more room, or altering your lifestyle to use it more. There is a reason you bought it in the first place, start doing what you imagined you'd be doing when you bought it.

It is a Cherokee. I bought it because it was a great deal and I have taken it out a few times but there honestly isn't anywhere to go. I have a new baby so I'm not going to drive hours out of town/spend the weekend away, just to go wheeling. Plus I get worried that my poo poo is going to break and I will be stuck far from home.

(this is not me justifying selling it. I am just trying to decide if it is worth it to keep it. Insurance is like $40 a month and I obviously don't owe anything on it, but It would be nice to have a few extra grand laying around)

Rarely. But it's our "second car" and has enough niggling little issues that we wouldn't get enough to replace it with anything decent if we sold it.

Plus insurance is negligible since it provides a multi-car discount and we only have liability on it, so beyond the 10 gallons or so of gas in an average month that it uses with as little as it gets driven there really isn't any "cost" to keeping it.

Note, of course, that these are my fiance's arguments. If we could sell it and replace it with something like a hatchback like a Golf or something along those size lines that would work for the same role as the Cherokee usually works in (Carting poo poo around) I'd be almost all for it. But only almost; we have a lot of good memories in that Jeep...

Sir, I think it's pronounced nook-ya-ler.
i doubt the golf would have all the room the cherokee has in the back with the seats folded down if you were looking to car things around. but really it's based on your personal situation. I live in central maryland and i know how much of a hassle the area can be, i'm selling my honda civic for a cherokee actually (probably not my smartest move ever). If you can't justify having the jeep and need to get rid of it then it's your prerogative. But hey those "good times" are always worth something too eh.

That's why you trailer it to a trail, so you can at least say that it broke on the trail. I love working on Jeeps, but I hate working on other vehicles, so I don't really mind when I break stuff. Being able to crouch and get to nearly everything under the vehicle is probably what makes it fun as opposed to feeling like work.

I've been leaning towards selling my TJ for a while to get a more roomier Jeep as a DD, but each time I catch myself working out a plan to buy another TJ within a year or two. Maybe I just shouldn't get rid of mine. I've owned it since it had 30K miles so whatever problems it has are all my own doing, and I know how to fix all of them. There's something to be said for that.

You're definitely right in that once you've experienced a few years of no-top no-doors fun with a Jeep, it's really loving hard to see yourself not having it.
